We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Re: Raising the income tax rate in Illinois
I was feeling sad for the people in Illinois when I read the headline, but they don't plan on raising the rate as high as we have here in NC.

The theory is that NC is shifting from "red" to "blue" and if that is happening, it adds another dimension to this discussion. Not only are people leaving high tax "blue" states for lower tax "red" ones, but could it be that the higher the taxes in a state, the "bluer" it becomes?

mudbug, in IL income taxes have been relatively low, but with very high sales and property taxes. The total tax burden has put IL in the top 5 tax states, but it looks like the libs won't be happy until reaching #1.

My fear is that as the libs who voted for these policies decide that they don't like the consequences they will then flood the "red" areas to reproduce their handiwork. They are like locusts.

The spin by the MSM and blogs diminishes the problem of working to identify and treat people with mental illness.

Regarding "signals" from Loughner -- let's be a little reasonable here. Loughner was never brought before a court for mental health evaluation, or rather I've seen no evidence that he was. A lot of people behave disruptively. I would think that Pima Community College police share information with Tucson PD and Pima County Sheriff's Office, but that doesn't mean that every disruptive student should be under surveillance. The article indicates that the action occurred at the College rather than in a court, so there would have been no judicial record to flag Loughner if he went to buy a gun -- which apparently he did. I haven't seen anything about when he purchased the gun. He would only have turned 21 in the last year or so.
Sheriff Dupnik comes across to me as a jerk in this case, but he is not individually responsible for identifying and tracking every potentially violent person in the county. Especially not an individual who had not come before a court.
His parents may have missed important cues that might have caused them to ask a court to help. I find myself sympathetic for their plight; they are far less victims than the families of those killed and injured but they are victims too.
