Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Enjoying passive learning - with no exams

This January, the BD family is devoting itself to enjoyable DVD series from Santa. That Ken Burns Jazz series is one (the old photos, film footage, and the music are well-worth it).


And, as part of our planned summer trip, we are alternating the Jazz with Great Ancient Civilizations of Asia Minor and the History of Ancient Egypt.


The Teaching Company has some good sales on right now. You can really pick any random course and find it interesting and life-expanding. Plus, unlike college, you get the best teachers, collected from all over the world. Home schoolers should use these courses. Lots of libraries have them now. Each one comes with a study guide.


We love these courses. Some are fine on audio, but some require the DVDs.


The trip (cruise, that is) for which we are preparing is below (we are only doing the Rome to Athens leg of the voyage, due to time and $ constraints). I have been eager to get back to Turkey.


Do I need a better camera?

I'd miss out the Egyptian leg but any trip around the med is rewarding in so many ways.With the rise of economy airlines all parts are accesible for as little as $100 return.

We love the Teaching Company dvds. Right now we're doing the American History series - and we use the study guides to bolster the homeschool experience.

I've been delighted with the Teaching Company although only one course so far on Existentialism or Satre's "No excuses". My budget needs to fatten somemore before I delve again.
