Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

About those old mice

Reversing aging in mice.


I can tell you one thing: those researchers are having a lot of fun in their lab, inserting genes and turning genes on and off. You can term this level of genetic engineering Playing God if you want to. I say Forget any practical application - this is fascinating basic biological research, and it is just cool as heck.

Cool. I must read too much sci-fi because as soon as my kids leave home, l'll be ready to sign up for another 10 years in the Infantry anywhere they want to send me if they can make me 20 again. (ala John Scalzi's "Old Man's War", or John Ringo's "A Hymn Before Battle")

"Playing God." Once we acquire knowledge, we decide whether to use it or not use it. When that knowledge affects people's quality of life and even their survival, then the decision to use it is playing God, and so is the decision not to use it. Even performing or not performing CPR is "playing God". God Himself knows that deciding to withhold DDT in malaria areas seems to be "playing God".
I am sure that, if God is directly intervening in people's lives, He'll make sure that the outcome is as He wills it. I have a faith-based opinion that physicians, scientists and street-level angels who do CPR are all God's agents and partners when we do good acts.
Do I want my own 30-year-old body back? Actually, I kind of do. I was a wolf-like runner and I had a pretty good set of abdominals, plus my knees felt good. I only needed one pair of glasses back then, too.

Geoff ... I'd love to have my 30-year-old body back too. Heck, I'd like to be able to walk without a cane. But not if I have to trade off my hard won knowledge to get it.

Each advancing decade brings its own pleasures as well as pain. Hope yours will always be on the plus side.
