We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
As I have grown ever more senile and crotchety, I have come to dislike the Beatles. Or more correctly, I can't stand most of the Beatles latter work; I still like the early years, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, etc. It is the affectation that gets to me, especially Lennon's (how apt a pun) arrogant smugness.
On the other hand, I have also come to appreciate Motown more and more, and all the early rock and roll stars.
Yikes, sykes! That sure sounds like me. When I listen to satellite radio classic vinyl station and late Beatles or Lennon come on, I instantly jump to another station. I am just now beginning to appreciate George Harrison, who I earlier dismissed, and get irritated at Lennon and McCartney.
But I've always loved Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Ray Charles, and those classic Motowns, except for most of Stevie Wonder.
i say, the song is an elegy, and that dawgs need to watch themselves objectively in times such as these, lest they get that faraway look in their eyes, as in, "what a country this used to be!"
I listen to & love all of it. Always thought Harrison was the most talented.
I've always interpreted their affectation & smugness (particularly Lennon's & McCartney's) as actions to overcome awkwardness & insecurities. Lennon displayed that 'til his death in 1980.
Alot of people forget that they were just kids between 20-23 yrs old when Beatlemania hit the US. What they did in roughly over 7 years no modern band has been able to replicate in the last 40. It is a sad world, creatively speaking, when the industry salivates about U2, Coldplay or (insert your artist of choice here0 takes 3-5 years to create what The Beatles could do in 3-5 weeks. And it sounds pretty much like the last offering.
