Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Friday, September 17. 2010ProCon: Back to the (grass) roots
A couple of months ago I hooked up online with a very sharp lady named Wendy Calloway. We had both mentioned in blog comments what a dismal failure the right-wing blogs turned out to be after the '06 (historic Democratic sweep) and '08 (Obama) elections, so I contacted her and asked her if she'd like to dissect the entire mess, piece by piece, and reevaluate everything; what worked, what didn't, and what to do about the latter. Therein followed about a thousand emails, a bunch of phone calls, and a big 'master file' of the future web site that we passed back and forth. As for the '06 and '08 elections:
The reference to Ned Lamont is quite apt. He was the Connecticut senatorial candidate that DailyKos, MyDD, et al, got behind. His election was supposed to be their 'crowning moment' as they showed the world what blogpower was all about. The point the above quote makes is that he got crushed in the election. Fat lot of good all that blogpower did.
To continue: Again, we don't want to drag any of the standard ideological tropes into it. Screw abortion and civil rights and immigration. Focus on the things that make people mad. Find something that really burns the average citizen's ass and harp on it.And yes, we mean little ol' you. ProCon does the heavy lifting: — We set you up with a rousing patriotic blog site and tons of 'motivational' posts to put on it if you don't want to write anything yourself. Then all you have to do is prowl the vast expanses of the Internet, dropping links to the appropriate page on your site (money, governmental overregulation, Cap & Trade, money, etc), then run for cover when you're exposed for the dirty little infiltrator that you are. But not before leaving that link — and maybe corralling a handful of Moderates and Independents along the way. As we and the pundits maintain, that's how you win elections. To hell with the actual Lefties. We're only after the fence-sitters. — The site provides you with ideas and tips for getting out there and actually getting your hands dirty, from hosting your own Tea Party, to getting up a carpool to one in the big city, to effectively using local newspapers, TV and radio stations, to handing out flyers at the grocery store. Remember, proactivism is a by-the-numbers game; a snowball effect. Every person you recruit to be proactive until the election might make the difference of a hundred votes, and each person they recruit and so on, until you're talking about that 1% that decides so many elections. Although it's never actually defined on the site, that's what the word proactive means. A regular political site is an 'active' site. Proactive means you get out there and rustle up even more people to fire up neighborhood Tea Parties and hand out flyers at the grocery store; things that tell the average slob out there that Yes, now is the time, we're finally throwing the bums out.
Score one for the good guys.

That is exactly what I have been doing with my book The Constitutionalist: Rights To Die For at http://theconstitutionslist.info It is cheap enough to hand out as I drive around and meet people who seem to be sitting on the fence. I wrote it after attending my first Obama Townhall protest and decided that I needed a way to interact with those independents and help them see that everything they thought was wrong was, and here was how and why it is wrong.
I congratulate you for your efforts. Thank you. Of course if you tell people you have plans to ensure their income is good, and do other things for them, the voters are not SO sceptical of any politician they'll just say "oh, another lying politician, not worthy of my vote".
And they'll probably be right too, as the vast majority of politicians (especially incumbents on both sides of the aisle) have no such interest in the voters at all, they just want their cosy powerseats and lifelong payouts and speaker's fees, while screwing the electorate at the same time and squeezing them for as long as possible to fatten their own bank accounts. TL - Glad to see we're on the same track. I'll have an interesting post coming out Monday on "who gets it and who doesn't". The ideologues are having a rough go of it, but momentum is a powerful force.
I'm now on your blog. Hey, this is some good shit! QUOTE: America is undergoing major renovations. It is a time of upheaval, of reorganization, of realignment, of significant readjustment. Whatever you believed in the past is probably irrelevant. Exactly. Please allow me to put you down in the "Gets It" column in Monday's post. BTW, the link was incorrect (typo) to the book. Here it is for those interested. I'm partway through the first chapter. Good stuff! Oh man. More "snarling, ferocious" Tea Partiers! And infiltrating Maggie's Farm!
Everybody knows that FDR made the Constitution obsolete. Come on, get with the program! We're all Socialists now! Why stand in the way of the Utopia to come? I can't wait to get my pink pony. BD - Ah, like usual, it took your "quiet voice of reason" to ask the serious question: "Who are you, Doc, to stand in the way of progress?" And a question that, admittedly, I have no answer for.
And that's Tea Baggers, please! Or 'Bagsmen', as I prefer. Bagpersons? Anyway, you did get the "snarling" and "ferocious" part correct. I just read two of T.L. Davis' blog posts and I'm feeling snarlier and ferociouser already. Man, people are angry out there, and not just at "the Dems" or "Washington" in general. QUOTE: But, after all of this, let me reassure the Republicans who snivel and whine at the treatment they have been given as of late: wait 'til the general election. What support you have felt wane is a distancing the people have for your friends and companions in the House and Senate who have pretended to be one thing and voted another. This has been the reckoning for the Republican Party, not the whole of the government. That's next. John McCain, please call your office. Some Tea Partier is on the line and wants to know if you'd like the job of White House janitor for the next administration. Websites do not persuade voters in any meaningful numbers.
Websites can provoke thinking, however. In general, I think people like to have their own views reinforced, so they do not feel alone or crazy. Fact is (I think), most people do not care to spend much of their mental bandwidth on politics. They just want to be left alone. I do like the presented point of view, Dr. Jupiter. You're correct - most people DON'T care for politics and most DO just want to be left alone.
But nearly everyone knows that something has gone very, horribly, DANGEROUSLY wrong. Our job is to help/make them connect the dots, and see that as ol' Ronnie (PBUH) was RIGHT -- the .gov is the PROBLEM, not the solution. From there, we must convince them that THEY MUST get involved - that NOBODY likes what must be done but ALL must join in to help or ALL will be screwed even worse in the times to come. IF we're lucky, we can then begin to lead them to the truth. How many have copies of The Constitution, BOR and DofI to give away? There are several ways to do this - from a Google search (Free Pocket Constitution) or downloading/printing/assembling your own booklets. Show it to them. Make them understand that Article 1/Section 8 of, and the 9th and 10th Amendments to our Constitution were (and REMAIN) The Law of the Land, and that the crushing Federal Leviathan is illegal, immoral and illegitimate. From there, it's an easy jump to the reason for the 2nd Amendment, the concept of Jury Nullification, States' Rights... I've managed to convince and convert several lifelong "bleeding hearts" -- mostly because THEIR PERSONAL rice-bowl was now in jeopardy -- but still. I think the BIGGEST factor in converting these people is making them see that every single "mass media" outlet in this nation is worse than TASS or PRAVDA - nothing more than a propaganda ministry for The Enemy. Even our beloved Fox News - though they air some allegedly "conservative" programming - still tends to repeat The Party Line in their straight-news efforts, though in arguably different words or context, the end result is the same. Bottom line? If we're to avoid an epic, wholesale bloodletting in this country, it will be by creating a mass, but peaceful, uprising. If enough people join the Resistance, few will need to die to accomplish our goal. If we remain the "teabaggers", 3 or 10 percenters -- in other words viewed as a noisy, backward minority -- then the slaughter to come will be worse than any can imagine. God help us -- and God Save Our Republic!! DD Thank you Doc. I love your site and this is an important step you have taken. I had to change the website to the new Washington Rebel site which is http://washingtonreb.com
Thank you for your comments on my work and blog. B -
"Websites do not persuade voters in any meaningful numbers." Good point, as always. We actually suggest people not spend any meaningful amount of time on the blogs, other than trying to recruit other activists. The last stat I read said only 8% of Americans read blogs on a daily basis, and, of the 10 most popular blogs, 7 of them were celebrity blogs, like Perez Hilton. Wendy's main thing are Tea Parties, large and small. Get people involved, let the speakers' words touch their hearts, minds and wallets. Me, I'm much more into placards and grabbing that 1.7 seconds of air time, like the guy in the above pic. I think a placard like that screaming "The time is now, America!" to the people who "do not care to spend much of their mental bandwidth on politics. They just want to be left alone" is of immense value. We want to imply it's their civic duty to get off the couch and vote for maybe the first time in 20 years. Too little, too late.
Some factions have awakened to their political power, which is pretty neat. But the underlying economics are dismal. Should the Tea Party make significant gains, all it will do is allow them to become tarnished along with the rest when the debt blob consumes us. There are some things we do not get to vote on. Politics is not the answer y’all are expecting it to be. After the collapse however, this Tea Party sparring will have served to identify the principles and personalities capable of shaping the next iteration of the U.S.A. FM -
"Politics is not the answer y’all are expecting it to be." I think the elemental point to be made is that people aren't looking for an "answer", they just want the madness to stop. As one of the 'motivational' posts on the site says, "The next candidate who promises fiscal restraint has got my vote." Just maintaining the status quo with no more 'stimulus' packages and government takeovers would be enough of an 'answer' right now. And just might forestall that 'collapse'. I like this idea, and I may consider joining...once I find a full time job.
This is a terrific concept for 2012. But it ain't gonna do diddly for this year. We're too far down the road. What will make a difference this year is the MSM's outlandish attack engine. I'm not a fan of O'Donnell in Delaware, but I do know a thing or two about why people vote or send money. As long as they paint her as an outlandish, crazy, nitwit....she's going to win. Should they ignore her and decide she's a sideshow....she will likely lose. Watch the polls. As the shrillness of the media attack on her grows or wanes, the numbers will rise and fall. I expect she will win Biden's seat. Just a guess. In the meantime, the media hasn't a clue about what the Tea Party is all about. Frankly, neither do I really. But I DO KNOW that it's not: Racist Purely Anti - Obama Purely Anti - Healthcare Driven by Far Right Christian thought These are all concepts I've BEEN TOLD it is. But I know it's not because I know Jews who are Tea Partiers. I know Democrats who are Tea Partiers. I know people who believe in some health reform who are partiers. I know former Obama supporters who are partiers....etc. Fact is....it's a movement that is decidedly AGAINST one thing: overwhelming government influence in the day to day lives of people and state governments. How they address that varies from state to state and tea partier to tea partier. But it IS a movement of considerable value. Obama SHOULD be scared. Because he started it by being sympathetic to Socialism. Nicely said, Rick, and your line "But I know what it's not" will be used in a future post.
Why are people having a hard time defining the spirit of the Tea Party? Easy one. Because how do you define a spirit? Thanks for the interesting list, CA. I'll check 'em out over the weekend.
Doc:
Can you pull the previous post? It had a broken link. Thanks. I do hope that folks on this project will reach out to some effective leaders already actively engaged in the freedom struggle, such as - David Codrea's Gun Rights Examiner column at http://www.examiner.com/gun-rights-in-national/david-codrea - Claire Wolfe's Living Freedom blog at http://www.backwoodshome.com/blogs/ClaireWolfe/ - Mike Vanderboegh's Sipsey Street Irregulars blog at http://sipseystreetirregulars.blogspot.com/2010/04/oh-hell-no-my-speech-at-fort-hunt-park.html and - Dan Almond's Restore the Constitution blog at http://restoretheconstitution.wordpress.com/2010/09/14/call-to-action-rtc-rally-september-17th-this-friday. And Doc, the word for that spirit is FREEDOM. My life, my family, my property, my speech, my worship, my associations, my armament, my home, my travel, my communications -- all completely free from any government interference except in extraordinary, clearly defined, and transparent circumstances. By any means necessary. You call to mind those Yosemite Sam mud flaps.
Maybe I should look for a “BACK OFF!” pin to go with my Gadsen flag pin…? CA - Done. And while I'd hate to dicker on the subject, I think "freedom" is too lofty a term for the spirit that moves the Tea Party. I see it as much closer to good ol' common sense. Even such esoteric matters as "cutting taxes increases revenue" become sensible after a few basics are understood. But there's unquestionably a heavy element of 'freedom' in there as well, which, again, makes it so hard to define.
With all due respect, adding more website place holders to an already crowded cyberspace to promote this is a bad idea. Sorry, but Websites are passe' - being crowded out by commercial sites and a virtual plethora of interests, opinions and viewpoints. Just look at any of our good friends websites - heck look at the Maggie's list on the left side of the page - how many of those do you read regularly - or for that matter ever know about.
With respect to Ned Lamont, Mr. Lamont had bigger issues that KOS and his kids overlooked - like being a complete and total nerd, screwing his own workers out of health care and unemployment when he "downsized" and sent jobs elsewhere and being a complete diaster at the one city level political job he did hold. In KOS's defense, he did attract a lot of attention to Mr. Lamont - he was just a severly flawed candidate with one issue - end the war. Addtionally, Joe Lieberman was the stronger candidate even as an independant - he just got caught up in a whorl wind of "change" - when the voters came to their senses, Lieberman was a shoo in. * The real action is Facebook and Twitter. An organized effort to attract conservative moderate leaners there would be a much more viable approach to the issue. As long as content can be regularly added and promoted, you will reach many more "faces" if you will than just another web site. Just look at the number of followers Ace, Allahpundit, Lileks, Iowahawk - heck, any of the usual suspects have. And you can open channel Tweets and point to articles and opinions using that forum. Much more effective in my opinion. PS: Greetings from North Carolina - just had to check in whilst doing other things. *I remember when Lamont won the nomination, the news stations showed the Democrat power brokers up on stage with Lamont and every single one of them looked like somebody had shot their mothers or they had just finished sucking on a very sour pickle. And he didn't get much support from them either. Lieberman may have been a little too unDemocratic for them, but at least he was 75% with them. Tom -
"The real action is Facebook and Twitter." From the site: QUOTE: As far as Facebook goes, with over 500 million members it might be a little tough to get your message across. But if you think you can, more power to you. I'd prefer neighborhood tea parties and 1.7 seconds of air time with your "The time is NOW, America!" placard behind the TV interviewee, as above. We're trying to deliver a message to America, not chit-chat on Facebook with our 'friends' who we've 'poked'. "to attract conservative moderate leaners" BZZZZT! Sorry, cap'n, but you used a naughty word. You broke the rule. You have to put $10 in the cookie jar. Remember: heart, mind, wallet. Ideology not allowed. I'm sorry, but I don't agree. I will say that local organizing is a good idea and for what it is worth, back home we've organized a sort-of-kinda tea party. The problem is that nobody ever comes out that way and it would seem that the assignment editors of the three Hartford stations only come out for the Fair and when something horrible happens. I can't see holding up a "NO MORE SPENDING" or "Mothers Against The Deficit" sign at a three car head on accident.
If there are any lessons we can take from our counter-parts on the left, it is that you have to make the message and counter-messages simple, easy to digest and to quickly get them out to the masses as efficiently as possible. Obtaining a domain name, getting Filezilla, downloading Wordpress, up loading Wordpress and oh by the way, it's going to cost you $7/mth for essentially a message board - seriously? That's a good idea? It is too much like work. On the other hand, Facebook and Twitter are already there to be used. You make your observation, post it and you're done. And you can do it from your phone or PDA which you have with you all the time without having to use a computer. You can communicate quicker without messing around with formatting because it is already formatted for you - just enter the text and boing - there it is. I'm doing this right now on my Motorola 'Droid because I'm not back home and I don't have access to a computer at the moment. Don't ask - long story, but my larger point is I'm sitting here in a lawyers reception area waiting for the Mrs. and her sister to finish some details with their advisor. That's the future of local, state and national communications and the quicker you, I and anybody else can get with it, experiment with the various social interfaces and come up with a winning strategy to use them, the better off we're going to be. Web sites ain't gonna do it. Or at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it. :>) And just to prove a point, head over to [b]Hot Air[/i] and read the Lady Gaga piece by Allahpundit. Read the last paragraph.
http://preview.tinyurl.com/2dkufb3 That's the power of instant communications and that's what we need to harness to make this revolution work. "I gave up after about two and a half minutes" - Allahpundit
I saw the words "Lady Gaga" and reflexively closed the browser window. I'm not interested in what celebrities think about anything except their movies. "It’s not as insignificant as you think." - AP Well, no, AP, not when friggin' Lady Gaga does it! How about when Cap'n Tom or ol' Doc Murky does it? Tom -
" can't see holding up a "NO MORE SPENDING" or "Mothers Against The Deficit" sign at a three car head on accident." Me, neither. That's why we put "carpooling to the big city" near the top of the list. We have to go where the news crews are. "Web sites ain't gonna do it." Also agreed. As I said up above, we suggest people not spend an undue amount of time fishing on the blog sites. Since it's dirt cheap and easy to do, we have them set up their own site to act as a focus point for their ongoing endeavors and, certainly, to give them a sense of accomplishment, but it's not meant to draw readers, and, in fact, the subject is never mentioned. Ok - one last time because I don't want to get you mad at me. :>)
IT IS TOO MUCH WORK!!! Keep it simple stupid is your friend in this case. You can't keep it simpler than using your PDA or cell phone and already established social forums can you? Wife's coming out of the office - TTYL. (That's what all the kids are saying anyway.) :>) I think I've been successful in guiding some young minds....
My recently-college graduated son and his friends have arrived into adult life only to find... no jobs. These are young men who try hard to take no interest in politics. However, it has taken only very brief conversations to convince them that Voting in the upcoming elections could possibly bring them Jobs ! They are reluctantly willing to admit it's worth a try. Bramble -
Ah, I see you're not afraid to take on a thorny issue. It was good of you to point this out. I'll stick it in my post next week aimed at the Democrats. Those little pricks. I mean really? Bad puns? :>)
I have some thoughts on this, but my thumbs are sore from yesterday's posting so I'll wait until I get home and can use a keyboard. Just one thing though - there are jobs out there if you are willing to move out of your comfort zone and move into something different. More later. "BAD" puns?? Hey, fella, let's see YOU come up with four bramble-related witticisms! (Pardon me if I'm a little sharp with you, but your jab cut me deeply.)
I'm interested in what you said about jobs. Please elaborate? Newspapers are dying, traditional publishers are dying. Websites might not be the best alternative, blogging sites either, but you know what? I've made a hell of a business out of word of mouth. A little here and a little there and suddenly, you have your stable of steady readers which is about as reliable as any newspaper subscription and you can even argue with them.
Where websites become passe is when there is no one to comment back, then it's just like a newspaper, easily discarded, but the interactivity is the real attraction. Watch as the election season heats up. Two weeks out will tell us a lot about how far the blogosphere has come and what it means to voters. Ask yourself, if you really wanted to make a great point to a friend, but didn't have the vocabulary, wouldn't it be easy to send them a link? Wait for it... I live in Southeastern Massachusetts, which means I have a tough row to hoe.
The single most successful line I have found that I can use when attempting to reach those who are concerned about whats happening to the country but don't care about politics and would prefer to vote as they always have, is to say to them; "You may not care about politics, but politics cares about you." Who said that first I wonder? |
