It was a high counsel that I once heard given to a young person, �Always do what you are afraid to do.�

Ralph Waldo Emerson, a man whose writings I have never been able to really understand. Even tried to read his bio. No dice. He was big on the lecture circuit once upon a time. Perhaps I am not smart enough.

A fairly small book. Stanley Cavell's Conditions Handsome and Unhandsome: The Constitution of Emersonian Perfectionism (checking title, yes), covers Emerson nicely, relating him to everything around.

Typical nice quote from the Cavell

"For an Emersonian, a Deweyan is apt to seem an enlightened child, toying with the means of destruction, stinting on the means of instruction, of provoking the self to work; for the Deweyan an Emersonian is apt to look, at best, like a Deweyan."

Bird Dog ... One of my favorite Emerson quotes is: "The more he talked about his honor, the faster we counted the spoons." The context is, of course, that a family's silver flatware was part of its wealth. The saying is particularly apt, right now, in the run-up to the November elections, when the family's wealth is under threat from many directions.

I couldn't ever get thru a book of his. Too much talk of feelings. And, as a famous group sensibly reminds us, feelings aren't facts. Fear is sometimes adaptive. Tho it is true that nothing ventured, nothing gained. And that courage is not the absence of fear but the facing of it. Doing one's duty anyway.

Here, in my home, when my son was younger, his announcement that he had conquered his fears always struck terror into my heart......but he did survive.
