We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Observing increasing CO2 levels and increasing temperatures, scientists assumed that the former must have caused the latter. How did the warmers know that it wasn't the other way around, and that higher temperatures caused higher CO2 concentrations? Or how did the warmers know that there wasn't another process, a naturally occurring one, that caused the temperature rise, with increasing CO2 just along for the ride? Answer: They didn't, because they never bothered to look.
Something is going very wrong in Mexico to prompt more than half a million of its citizens to cross the border illegally each year. Impoverished Mexican nationals variously cite poor economic conditions back home, government corruption, a lack of social services, and racism. In other words, it is not just the desirability of America but also the perceived undesirability of Mexico that explains one of largest mass exoduses in modern history.
But why, then, would Mexican President Felipe Calderon, whose country's conditions are forcing out its own citizens, criticize the United States, which is receiving so many of them? And why, for that matter, would many of those illegal immigrants identify, if only symbolically, with the country that made them leave, whether by waving its flag or criticizing the attitudes of the Americans who took them in?
"Global Warming, R.I.P" - The reverse link between CO2 levels and warming has always been known. Warming oceans released CO2. (Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" had to reverse the warming and CO2 levels to make their graph work the way they wanted to.) That's one of the things even the British courts had to admit.
If CO2 had the effect on warming that Al Gore wants, this would have led to runaway global warming millenia ago, with no need for man.
Another problem with the war on CO2 emissions is that plants need CO2 like humans need oxygen. It's one of the three requirements for photosynthesis, along with chlorophyll and sunlight.
If Al Gore gets his way and reduces CO2 in the air to zero, all plants will die. Then all animals will die. If Al just gets close, he'll still cause mass extinctions worse than the most extreme of any of his alarmist warming scenarios.
The clincher is that there are much worse greenhouse gasses out there. It's been pointed out how much water vapor affects the Earth's heat retention. "You can go outside and spit and cause more global warming than all the CO2 combined."
