We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
...take Sarah Palin, who graduated from the University of Idaho, whose alma mater was sung at my father's funeral, so don't neg the U of I around me. She's not as well educated as Michelle Obama. She's not as well educated as a President or Vice President should be. But had she gone to Harvard Law her ideas about the constitution would be a lot less sound than they happen to be. That is what we have come to.
It is more precise to say that Sarah Palin has not been as expensively educated as Barack or Michelle Obama. In fact, Barack's education has been very expensive for all of us, and gets more expensive with every official act he takes.
And anyone who thinks that the bailouts or the health care botch reform are consonant with the U.S. Constitution is maleducated and not better educated.
I wonder how many are illegal in the Harris county hospital system (Houston)? I remember (80's) when I worked there, that Harris county set some sort of record for the number of live births in a U.S. hospital (IIRC 22,000+). When I left the area in the early 90's, the policy for a normal delivery was 8 hours, basically long enough to verify the mother and child had no complications, and get them out the door. One of the better rational explanations was the lowering of exposure to infections.... The other side was 90% of the mothers were indigent and had no means to pay.
(Several asides: The HCHD was only one of 7 taxing entities on my bill when I owned a home there. The old Jefferson Davis hospital (the one that set the record) was used in Robocop II (after closure and prior to teardown). Another HCHD hospital (Ben Taub) was used (ER) to train trauma surgeons during the first Gulf War. The saying around Houston was, if you suffered a life threatening incident, the place to go was Ben Taub. After you were stabilized, get transferred to another medical center facility ASAP. The number of live births at Jeff Davis hovered in the high teens the whole time I was in Houston [the number 19,000 sticks in my mind for some reason].)
The Hill-Burton act (now [en] title [ment] XVI according to wikipedia) says that no one can be turned away from medical treatment. Houston just has a first class hospital system with a large enough tax base to afford (absorb?) it. The tax base and economies of scale allow it.
John makes a good point in this thread when he points out that Barack and Michelle Obama may have been more expensively educated than Sarah Palin but, as previously pointed out by posters on this site, 'expensive' does not necessarily equate with 'good.' Neither Obama has proven by word or deed to be WELL educated. We have not been allowed to see any of Barack's scholastic grades from high school on through Occidental College through Harvard and through Columbia. Nor have we seen any of his pre-graduation writings.
That's not very reassuring. Hiding one's grades and one's writings would suggest that they are nothing to be proud of. Yes, indeedy, Barack is reputed to have written two autobiographical books before he was forty-five, but doubts have been discussed at length that he even wrote them without a 'ghost writer' to clean up his prose and insert some interesting ideas.
Sarah, on the other hand, has also got a college degree, which she fought hard to complete. And she has been open as the day about her grades, as well as her thoughts on governing both her state and her country.
Some folks have implied that she is raacist. Rubbish. She is married to a man, gorgeous as he is, who is part Yu'pik Eskimo, and therefore her five children, whom she obviously loves dearly, are part Eskimo. She doesn't make them ride in the back of the bus, or sleep in the servants' quarters.
Democrats, who meticulously 'keep score' on which races are getting a fair break, and end up skewing the records whenever they can, are far more racists than the grown-ups here, the Republicans and conservatives.
P.S. In the interests of fair disclosure, I also was educated in Eastern elite schools, Radcliffe [part of Harvard] and Columbia, back when they were both pretty good schools, but I am ashamed of what they have become today.
It has been an open secret in the Ivy League for years that the undergraduate educational standards at Harvard are shockingly low. Obviously, there are numerous exceptions, but the average Harvard BA is fairly uneducated, and damned proud of it. The parents are buying the shiny tail fins, and not a quality car.
GaryS ... I agree about the average Harvard BA being fairly uneducated. They were back in the 1940s as well, but at least the professors back then pointed out [endlessly] that the information we learned in our undergraduate days was simply to give us guideposts in our lifelong pursuit of knowledge. It wasn't supposed to be the Final Word, the be-all-and-end-all, the 'now you can quit learning and studying' permission that today's graduates receive.
However, the conceit of the newly credentialed is almost endless.
