Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Bermuda is a delightful place, and a quick trip from the East Coast. My Dad was kind enough to pay for our honeymoon there, and we have been back many times since then to refresh our honeymoon whenever needed. My parents had their honeymoon there too. We have each done our time in the Caribbean. We don't really care for it much. Decadent, uncivilized. How many hours do you want to sit on a beach like an idiot? Well, renting a bareboat for a week might be ok, visiting de islands, mon. Boat drinks. Comments

Use Barritt's Ginger Beer, which may now be Gosling's, from Bermuda - that wussy Jamaican stuff doesn't measure up.
Bermudians (and I) prefer it without any ice whatsoever. Just chill the ingredients. Ginger beer, like real beer, loses much of its essence if it's watered down with melted ice. Sounds interesting and worth a try. But it would probably knock me on my butt.
These are delicious but deceivingly strong. Enjoy with caution!
Gosling's now has diet ginger beer. I'm [type II] diabetic, so I'm using that. Don't know if anyone working on diet rum, though.
We discovered Dark 'n Stormys after a sailboat race to Bermuda and have been enjoying them ever since. Barritt's (now Gosling's) ginger beer is the way to go. We garnish it with a swizzle stick cut from a piece of ginger (tough to do with taller glasses as ginger doesn't tend to allow long straight slices) and a wedge of lime.
Indeed! Goslings and Goslings is the stuff. We keep some craft beer handy on the boat at all times but at a regatta party or at home, a Dark & Stormy is the rocket fuel of choice. At home that the ratio of booze to ginger beer often gets confused, with the rum badly outnumbering the ginger beer at the schwerpunkt by a ratio of perhaps 2:1. There's clearly something wrong with my shotglasses... It works out okay anyhow.
No, no, no, you all have it wrong. Use dark Crucian rum (made of course, on St Croix). Delicious.
Very deceptive drink, but delicious. Kind of like Long Island Iced Tea, which sounds innocent, but has a total of something like six or seven ounces of hard liquor in it. Must be six. I've heard that seven ounces of hard liquor consumed within a ten minute period can take you out of this world. Permanently.
Marianne No, no, no, you have it all wrong again. The Rum Swizzle is the real cocktail of Bermuda by a large margin.
Swizzle Inn Rum Swizzle Makes 6 drinks 4 oz. Gosling's Black Seal rum 4 oz. Gosling's Barbados rum juice of 2 lemons 5 oz. pineapple juice 5 oz. orange juice 2 oz. Gosling's falernum, or sugar syrup 6 dashes Angostura bitters Mix in pitcher with cracked ice. Stir vigorously until a frothy head appears. Strain in cocktail glasses. Having spent over 365 days in BDA between 76 and 88 I managed to become very familiar with my good friend Gosling from St. David's to Ireland Island and I saw far more folks enjoying Swizzles than D&S. When I was growing up in Bermuda in the 1960s and 1970s, the last bar before you get to the airport was (and I believe still is) The Swizzle Inn, at the western end of the Causeway leading to St. George's. The bar's slogan was the inoffensive "Fly on a Swizzle" and very many did, wimpy slogan though it is. However, the story is that earlier, it had used the much more aggressive (and realistic) slogan of "Swizzle Inn, Swagger Out" but the local police forced the bar to change it because rather too many of the patrons took the instructions totally to heart and then forgot about riding on the left and all other basic traffic rules when they tried to re-mount their mopeds and get back to their hotels ... sad, really, but that's human nature.
No no no, you have it all wrong.
Not really, I love Dark and Stormy cocktails, exactly as above. I just wanted to join the argument, lots of fussy folks here, what's one more? For my part, I'll leave the original recipe alone, but recommend Stewart's Ginger Beer if you want some variety. Lots of ginger 'bite'! http://www.drinkstewarts.com/flavors.aspx When you run out of ginger beer (not exactly your every day staple), enjoy my version of this, called Pirate Booty--mix your dark rum with root beer. Pretty damn nice.
I like it when you re-run these posts that have a comment from Marianne. She was definitely a person I would have liked to have met personally. I miss her comments. I hope you are enjoying your holiday weekend.
Painkillers: rum, orange juice, pineapple juice, cream of coconut, and nutmeg. You gotta have the nutmeg.
I think it safe to say there are no bad rum drinks.
Had my first Dark N' Stormy at the conclusion of my first Marblehead to Halifax race - Goslings was a prime sponsor for the race. The ginger is refreshing, the rum is luxuriant. I've grown to like these best when made by pouring the ginger beer into the glass and then the Goslings - no stirring. Love the Swizzle too, we substitute honey for the sweetener. Painkillers are a sort of summer egg nog due to the nutmeg floating on top. Delish. Don't forget the Goombay Smash: 1 oz Dark Rum 3/4 oz Coconut Rum 3 oz Pineapple Juice 1/2 oz Triple Sec 1/2 oz Apricot Brandy Garnish w/lime wedge Some people top that off with a 151 floater. Hard pressed to make it through more than one if you do. Try making Ginger beer (or Ale) at home it's easy and you don't need any fancy yeast. Fleischmann’s works fine.
You really should sail in the Caribbean. The British islands, in particular, are a testament to the civilizing influence of their culture, a true gift to the world. We sailed from St. Vincent to Grenada last month, visited the oldest botanical garden in the Western Hemisphere in St. Vincent. Lovely people, gorgeous beaches and snorkeling. Grenada is worth its own trip--we are hoping to get back down later this year. Dark and Stormys are an integral part of our trip!
