Cuba should be a wealthy nation. Its advantages are numerous and obvious. There's only one reason for that poor old guy to be sitting there in squalor: other people put him there, and those other people are the half-century ago dangerously sappy do-gooders who thought they could get a leg up the moral superiority ladder by giving to a charismatic liar the keys to the state.

As if such a charismatic liar is EVER going to tell you anything but what what will get him into power & control.

Moral superiority on the cheap is spiritual squalor, and squalor anyplace given time enough will be squalor everyplace.

It's like those nightmares where something unspeakable is gaining on you, and you're trying to maneuver to a better position, but your feet just won't move.

feeblemind, yep, but two things, (1) the nuclear strategic forces are, as Obama has pointed out "the president's weapons" --meaning he can abide by the treaty even in lieu of ratification, and (2) we have a sorry history of willfully blinding our verification --apparently (and hopefully, if you get my drift) so as not to embarrass any pol or agency.

Clinton turned such a blind eye to Reagan's INF Treaty verification that when the wall fell, eastern Europe was found to be literally festooned with illegal SS-23's, almost a hundred secret, hidden, kremlin-controlled Intermedite Range thermonuclear missiles with a total blast power of 500 or 600 Hiroshimas.

Also, re civil defense and winning a nuclear war, starting before USSR broke up but tellingly continued without pause to this day, some 200 civil-defense underground living facilities including a full size underground city that is without doubt built to fight a war post-nuclear ICBM exchange --the Yamantau Mountain Complex --which we never inspect under any verification regime --it will have been again in Obama's treaty "exempted".

The question is not IF we are slowly throwing in the towel, the question is "WHY, when nuclear weapons are so cheap and efficient at keeping peace in regards 'big' war, ARE we throwing in the towel?"
