Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

That's what the beer man calls out at Yankee Stadium: "Hey! Beer man! Beer man here! You know you want it." Devilish marketing.


You know you want this pretty Hinckley 49, currently for sale. But even if you afford her, can you afford to keep her?

Lovely boat, Bird Dog. Fills me with wistful lust for the old days. But, as it is with a very expensive mistress, the problem is not only the initial investment, but the daily/weekly/yearly costs. My husband liked the boat "pron" picture, but shook his head and said, "a boat is a hole in the water into which you pour money." And money is in rather short supply for most of us nowadays.

But thanks for the dream ...

... and of course, the two happiest days in a boat owner's life: The day he buys it, and the day he sells it. Also your sentiment could be said about houses and automobiles, or most tangible physical assets ... especially automobiles for they seldom appreciate.

I still subscribe to "Liveaboard" magazine in attempt to keep that dream alive. Unfortunately my wife hates the water so unless I change wives (after 31 years) the dream is mostly pipe.... and empty pipe at that!

Ahh well, time to slink back to the office pit.............. and dream on... dream on...

For 6 or 7 years, I had the honor and pleasure of playing on the 9th Sou'wester 42 Hinckley built. What a beautiful blue water boat. "Lineas clasicas", a friend once heard in Mexico.

The increased cost to keep a 49' vessel over a 42' vessel would be significant, I would think. Plus, there are a lot more sails on board a ketch than there are a sloop. More rigging. More brightwork. More varnish. More, more. Please.

hah! Any boat is expensive to keep, whether in money, time, or both.

I miss my 67 Morgan '24, but I agree with the cliche JoeC cited. I was happy at the time to see her go.

A big boat like that would be fun, but I would need a lot more free time or money than I have now to keep her in paint and powder.

Besides, I like wooden boats.
