Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Sunday, February 28. 2010Al Gore speaks out on "redemption by law"In the NYT, We Can’t Wish Away Climate Change:
Somehow I doubt that it would be "an enormous relief" to Al. He is doubling down. It's his familiar hysteria and fear-mongering accompanied by many factual errors. From Am Thinker:
More push-back from Bill McKibben (h/t Legal Ins) - a guy with as much math and science in his background as Al Gore:
So science is about "cynicism" and "also about courage and hope"? Maybe now it is. See Post-Normal Science (h/t, Vanderleun). A quote:
How do we adjust to a world that is packed with narratives and lies? Not too difficult: be skeptical.

Some may've seen this recent Nyquist essay on the AGW offensive:
http://www.financialsense.com/stormwatch/geo/pastanalysis/2009/1204.html (here's a snip from it) the planet's chief spokesman for global warming, former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, Jr., owed a great deal to Moscow's "capitalist prince," Armand Hammer. While Hammer siphoned money to many politicians, he especially enriched Gore's father, Senator Al Gore, Sr. About this relationship one of Hammer's close associates, British journalist Neil Lyndon, wrote, "Throughout the whole of his life, Al Gore Sr. and his family depended on pay-outs, kickbacks and subventions from Hammer. Like his father before him, Al Gore Jr.'s political career was lavishly sponsored by Hammer from the moment it began until Hammer died...." In times past, the FBI described Hammer's corporate holdings as "an organization of Soviet intelligence." The U.S. State Department referred to him as a "Soviet mail carrier." German intelligence found that Hammer was involved with the Soviet trade mission in Berlin, and assumed he was a Communist agent. According to researcher Edward Jay Epstein's book, Dossier: The Secret History of Armand Hammer, a British raid on a Soviet trading company in London on 12 May 1927 revealed Hammer's true role. "Among the incriminating documents were records directly linking the Hammer enterprise to Moness Chemicals," noted Epstein, "which was servicing Comintern espionage agents in Germany and Britain. When this was reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Moness's office in New York were searched, and agents found a paper trail that included ... $5,000 'loans' from Harry [Armand] Hammer. The bureau was also able to trace the various people and causes to whom these 'loans' were to be channeled. Hammer was funneling money from his Berlin office to Moness's herbal-remedy company, which was then disbursing it to Soviet secret agents." To understand global warming, we need to understand the work of Soviet and Russian secret agents. Through an alarmist message, certain groups have become influential. They have mobilized a powerful and active constituency. They are lobbying for government programs. They seek government intervention in the economy. They also seek the "socialization" of industry and commerce, while offering an irresistible critique of greedy corporate interests threatening the whole planet. In short, these groups have initiated an attack against the capitalist system. (end snip) Buddy, why don't you make it easier on your readers by turning your website references into Maggie-friendly live links? See "more tips here" when you post. Thanx.
right you are, Gringo --i forgot myself there. The 'wall of text' is rude. Al Gore does that to people.
Um, by definition, isn't anything that is not normal then "abnormal". Post-normal science sounds very abnormal to me.
I'm starting to wonder if there is anything "post-" that I really like, or at least as "post-" is currently defined by the progressive educational, scientific (both hard and social sciences), and political communities. "Adjust" to a wold full of lies? You mean lies and liars are new? You think this is different?
Oh dear, they don't teach much history do they? Wossname, the Greek, took his flashlight to look for an honest man and had difficulties some years ago. He wasn't the first and nothing has changed, nor will it. "How do we adjust to a world that is packed with lies?" Learn to say "that's absolute rubbish" at regular intervals.
It's very cleansing. Marianne Who thawed out Gore? I had him on a milk carton; he should have stayed there.
McKibben, that Walking Azalea, has a degree in Divinity. Fits well with the proselytizing, but not much for the science end of the stick. His life in Ripton is very much a "do as I say, not as I do" existence. I recall seeing Mary Martin laying Peter Pan many, many years ago. Near the end of the story, Tinkerbell drinks the poison meant to kill Peter and begins to fade away. Peter turned to the audience and begged the kids out there who truely believed in Fairies to clap their hands so Tink could get well. Al Gore is begging those who truely believe to clap their hands and save his multimillion dollar investment AND a positive place in history.
Let's see. There was 2000. Then carbon credit trading. And finally the Nobel. That's three strikes Al. There are damn few out here clapping for you anymore. Now, please, fade away. joated, you have a sequence error --carbon trading scheme predates even vice-presidenthood (which leads to the motives of Clinton the Damned, but that's another story). Search [ gore strong molten metals ] --Judi McLeod at Canada Free Press has an especially good piece on the shenanigan --
One needs to go back further in time to see the genesis. Rachel Carson called for a "democratization of science" and this position was also espoused by Barry Commoner. These are the creation myths at the heart of the environmental movement. "Environmental science" was a tool-- the tool had to fit the movement--- the movement had no need to fit the science.
Just a point - when Gore talks about using the law to redeem the human race, he's not talking the language of Christ or the bible, where redemption comes from a personal desire to be redeemed. He's talking the language of Torquemada, the inquisition and the auto-de-fe, where the law was used to force redemption on the "sinners" in order to save their souls - at the cost of their lives.
I just could not help, reading Gore's tripe, to feel a bit of pity for this man. When the IOP is opining that the CRU e-mails call into question the integrity of science, and yet Gore refuses to acknowledge any of it, he really has become a caricature of the caricature he already was. But while I do pity him, that would not stop me from feeding him to the polar bears if I ever got the slightest chance. |
