Few of our readers recall tunneling to the barn during the big New England nor'easter blizzard of March 11, 1888.

Here's the weather story of that snowstorm (which tragically omits the role of AGW - we should never let an ancient weather crisis go to waste).

Amazing pics.
I've always wondered how those early settlers in the 17th and 18th centuries survived and didn't head South after the first such blizzard? Forget about Canada.

Laura Ingalls Wilder's books are full of blizzard stories; in fact, "The Long Winter" is one long blizzard story, with a short prelude. And it includes Pa being dispatched to help dig out the railroad.

Actually, her books make pretty good blizzard reading, no matter how old or edgicated you are.

Thank you D! I love Laura Ingalls Wilder and find her writing so relavent to today's world. As I recall, the blizzards kept coming well into the summer and the train delivered their Christmas turkey still frozen in July.

Mebbe so, but some of us old-timers are old enough to remember the Great Blizzard of 1978!

The main effect on this old codger being that his professors' law school recommendations got lost somewhere in the snows of Cambridge--with the result being that he had the good fortune of ending up going to law school in sunny California rather than snowy New England.

Many people were stranded in their cars along roads and highways throughout the New England region. People perished on Route 128 (parts of which were later designated Interstate 95) outside Boston as snow piled high enough to prevent the exhaust from escaping from their idling vehicles. Route 128 eventually had to be evacuated by cross-country skiers and snowmobilers. Over 3,500 cars were found abandoned and buried in the middle of roads during the clean-up effort. This figure does not include the countless other vehicles buried in driveways, on the sides of streets, and in parking lots. Other transportation links were disrupted and shut down region-wide, stranding public transit commuters in city centers.

Throughout eastern Massachusetts, automobile traffic was banned for the remainder of the week. Thousands of people walked around the quiet city streets and frozen Charles River, some on cross-country skis.
