We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Not everybody is on to the global-warming scam, not yet, but all the people — or enough of them — are getting there. "Global warming," or even "climate change" as Al's marketing men now insist that it be called, is becoming the stuff of jests and jokes. Sen. James M. Inhofe of Oklahoma, a Republican, built an igloo of that hot stuff that buried Washington last week on the Capitol lawn and dubbed it "Al Gore's new home."
It has been a topic of jest at Maggie's Farm for years.
A few years ago, however, when I worked as a reader for Yale’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions, it became immediately clear to me that Asians - who constitute 5 percent of the US population - faced an uphill slog. They tended to get excellent scores, take advantage of AP offerings, and shine in extracurricular activities. Frequently, they also had hard-knock stories: families that had immigrated to America under difficult circumstances, parents working as kitchen assistants and store clerks, and households in which no English was spoken.
But would Yale be willing to make 50 percent of its freshman class Asian? Probably not.
His Hopeful Changeness cannot be Ronald Reagan -- he lacks the intelligence, the wit and the wisdom of that great man. He could be the next FDR, stifling the economy and encouraging the expansion of a government already too bloated, but I hope a Republican Congress will stop him.
Ahh ... the Great Global Warming Scam. I'm so glad I've lived to see it crumbling in the fierce light of revealed truth. All of the entrenched pseudo-religionists who've been promoting and investing in The Scam are fighting back. But uncomfortable truths have a way of breaking through the clouds in spite of all resistance.
Gov. Rick Perry, Attorney General Greg Abbott and Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples today announced that the state is taking legal action in the U.S. Court of Appeals challenging the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) endangerment finding for greenhouse gases.
“Texas is aggressively seeking its future in alternative energy through incentives and innovation, not mandates and overreaching regulation,” Gov. Perry said. “The EPA’s misguided plan paints a big target on the backs of Texas agriculture and energy producers and the hundreds of thousands of Texans they employ. This legal action is being taken to protect the Texas economy and the jobs that go with it, as well as defend Texas’ freedom to continue our successful environmental strategies free from federal overreach.”
“Governor Perry should win an Olympic medal for taking the environment downhill,” said Luke Metzger at Environment Texas. “Global warming is the greatest environmental threat facing Texas and the planet and Governor Perry’s obstructionism puts the state at great risk.”
“Hey, Elmer, lookee hyar, the dang guvner is gone dang ski’n rat cheer n’ th middle of a ENVARMENT criziz!”
