We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
In this enterprise, the group was aided not only by environmental zealots, anti-technology Luddites, utopian one-worlders, and population-control fanatics, but also by bureaucrats, businesses, brokers and bankers, who had learned how to game the system and profit from government grants and subsidies for exotic schemes to produce "carbon-free" energy and from the trading of carbon permits. Hundreds of billions have already been wasted -- most of this in transfers of tax revenues to a favored few.
These sums pale, however, in comparison to the trillions that would have been spent in future if some of the mitigation schemes had come to fruition -- such as an extension and major expansion of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol to control greenhouse-gas emissions. Fortunately for the world economy and for taxpayers in industrialized nations, these schemes collapsed at the Copenhagen climate conference in Dec 2009.
Yep. Its a felony. Throwing "missiles" at an occupied vehicle. Allow them to get away with this and next thing you know, they'll be putting white powder in their underwear and trying to blow up an airliner. All the same in the government's eyes.
We can only hope that some judge does the ADULT thing, calls it what it is (juvenile vandalism at the most), gives them a tongue lashing for being stupid and sends them on their way.
“It’s still a serious matter, especially with the bad road conditions,” said Mary-Hope Vass, public information officer with the Harrisonburg Police Department. “These plow drivers were working long and hard to clear the roads.”
There has been an interesting thread at the Volokh conspiracy about snow clearing and how skilled a job it actually is. Getting the road clear, the excess snow where it needs to be, while not doing any damage to property is quite a challenge.
So dumping shovelfulls of snow onto the windshield of such a driver at the end of their shift is not quite fun and games to the driver.
I am truly mystified why anyone could think that throwing objects at vehicles driven by unsuspecting drivers is an innocent fun activity. The intent is clearly to distract and annoy, if not to do property damage and cause accidents.
I've read a TVR forum thread which was full of reports of broken windshields, cars pockmarked with chipped paint, and curbed wheels(because of the distraction in hazardous conditions) all caused by these "innocent" snowballs.
Nope. I never said is wasn't dangerous, just stupid. But the elevation of "stupid" to felony happens so much anymore it makes my head swim. Stuff that would have resulted in what I indicated earlier, a chew out by the judge and admonition to go forth and crime no more, now results in huge fines and prison time for basically childish behavior. I also call it the end of adulthood, where we have abdicated our responsibilities as parents and allowed the legal system to substitute itself. You could call it the nanny state, the nanny being responsible for the raising of the children.
