The Crusades lasted a thousand years (Spain 711 CE, France 732, through Vienna 1683). Western Europe played defense for 95% of that. Ask the Romanians. They would argue that Western Europe didn't go on crusades enough for their need, leaving them to bear the brunt of the real, Islamic Crusades.

As to the slaughter of Jews, Copts, and other innocents by the Crusaders, there are two bits of context conveniently left out of the story. First, this is the history of all peoples in the world until quite recently - we have all gotten along by killing those different from us. It is undeniably evil, but it is hardly unique to medieval European Christians. Second, much of Europe remained pagan for centuries after the introduction of Christianity - indeed, it has never been far below the surface in Central Europe, even up until the 20th C. To attribute all the evil of their actions to the specifically Christian part of their culture is a convenient rewriting of history that began among those thinkers who fancied to call themselves "The Enlightenment." They had their own self-serving reasons for insisting on that connection. The primitive and still-pagan culture explains as much or more.

Related: One might say much the same about witch-burning. The Puritans get the rap for a one-off event in one of their least-religious communities, but the farther East one goes in Europe, and the deeper into the more pagan areas, the more witch-burning one finds in the historical record.
