We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
“Sen. Whitehouse: foes of health care bill are birthers, right-wing militias, aryan groups.” Meanwhile, Jennifer Rubin adds, “it will be crystal clear who, when the chips are down, tried to stop the largest big-government power grab and tax-a-thon in decades and who rolled over. The opponents of those Democrats who rolled over will have a plethora of material for their campaign ads.”
Birthers and Aryan groups? Sounds like us. Along with over 60% of Americans, I guess, who oppose this fascistic, ie government-controlled - monstrosity.
C-Span has the transcript of Sheldon Whitehouse’s speech. Here is an excerpt. There is much more.
History cautions us of the excesses to which these malignant, vindictive passions can ultimately lead: tumbrels have rolled through taunting crowds; broken glass has sparkled in darkened streets; ``strange fruit'' has hung from southern trees; even this great institution of government that we share has cowered before a tail gunner waving secret lists....
A well-regarded Philadelphia columnist recently wrote of the ``conservative paranoia'' and ``lunacy'' on the Republican right. The respected Maureen Dowd, in her eulogy for her friend, William Safire, lamented the ``vile and vitriol of today's howling pack of conservative pundits.''
Always nice to have Brahmins like Sheldon Whitehouse showing us the path to enlightenment. The Whitehouses I grew up with in NE, and played sports with every day, were not sneering Brahmins, but salt of the earth Swamp Yankees.
