We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
To date, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has never offered any evidence of a “human fingerprint” on the modest (0.5 degrees Celsius) warming that occurred between the 1850s end of the Little Ice Age and 1940. They haven’t even given us a convincing story about the 0.2 degree Celsius warming that occurred from 1940 to 1998 (part of that tiny warming has disappeared). James Hansen’s predictions of massive overheating, given to the Senate in 1988, have been overtaken by a quiet sun and a telling drop in global ocean temperatures.
The public has noticed there’s been none of the long-predicted runaway warming — or any warming at all since 1998. They’re reading the Climategate emails of the “consensus scientists” confessing they don’t know why warming stopped. That’s a huge confession.
The public cares less and less for tired scare stories of a parboiled planet.
The EPA has officially politicized itself and is now a wing of the Democratic Party. Therefore, a Republican campaign promise for the landslide of 2010 should be the abolition of the EPA. Goodbye - here's your pink slips.
The Clean Air Act needs a complete re-write with much narrower definitions and more Congressional oversight.
In Copenhagen the air has turned chilly for the poor nations.
This little blurb stuck out at me this morning. Apparently the talks are in “disarray” now that a leaked memo is out that puts it all into perspective. See, the rich countries just made the rules. The poor countries that thought they’d get to tell us what to do for a change are now wondering why their piss-ant countries with economies comparable to small towns in America are being told to sit on the back of the bus.
That’s not the point.
The real point is the UN is being carved up from the inside it seems. I call this the death of the UN. The people doing it must have their own agenda and feel free to display it openly, just like their lavish limos and jets (a real IN-YOUR-FACE to the po'folks, eh?).
Didn’t anyone see this coming? Emperor Gore has a few words for you… World Government to start with.
[From the Guardian linked on Drudge] The document was described last night by one senior diplomat as "a very dangerous document for developing countries. It is a fundamental reworking of the UN balance of obligations. It is to be superimposed without discussion on the talks".
A confidential analysis of the text by developing countries also seen by the Guardian shows deep unease over details of the text. In particular, it is understood to:
• Force developing countries to agree to specific emission cuts and measures that were not part of the original UN agreement;
• Divide poor countries further by creating a new category of developing countries called "the most vulnerable";
• Weaken the UN's role in handling climate finance;
• Not allow poor countries to emit more than 1.44 tonnes of carbon per person by 2050, while allowing rich countries to emit 2.67 tonnes.
Developing countries that have seen the text are understood to be furious that it is being promoted by rich countries without their knowledge and without discussion in the negotiations.
"It is being done in secret. Clearly the intention is to get [Barack] Obama and the leaders of other rich countries to muscle it through when they arrive next week. It effectively is the end of the UN process," said one diplomat, who asked to remain nameless.
