The Dems are the fast road to Socialism and the Republicans are the slow road to Socialism.

Many people say this, but heard most recently from my son and one of my daughters (the Ron Paul one at Kenyon - not the McCain one in NYC). We observed during our drives yesterday, with irony, that the only reason China has been able to slowly, step-wise get rid of Socialism is by having an authoritarian, police-state government. Places like France, England, and Germany will never be able to do that, with so many people sucking on the government teats. They are screwed economically, spiritually, and humanly. Their people with verve and ambition still come to America...for now.

For one very large thing, the Chinese people can be pretty sure their executive branch --and legislative too for that matter --is "for" the Chinese people. That must be a nice feeling to have.

I wish I believed the Chinese government was for their people. I don't. For "China", yes, maybe they are for China. For the Party and their own oligarchy -- yes, clearly. But for their people? No, less than a farmer is "for" the food animals. The government seems to want to pacify the proles and will let them improve their lot for that reason. Real freedom? Choose your own family structure? Speak your mind? Challenge the powers that be? China has never permitted those things and especially not under their current masters.

True --Americans would have an extremely hard time tolerating a similar gov't. But the Han peoples are said to be proud of their last 30 years of economic and nationalist progress. Trend and direction is everything --we're still in relatively-to-the-world great shape over here but not relative-to-how-we-want-to-be. The trends are gloom-making. Nobody knows how to cope with DC, not even DC. One could say, we'd be better off without the vote if this crap is the best we can do. I mean, if we were under a totalitarian boot, at least then we could revolt. Who we gonna revolt against as-is? Mamma?
