Ahh ... the polar bears. Thanks, News Junkie for linking to this story about our polar bears, ursus maritimus, described by biologists as "the largest land-based marine mammal in the world."

They're doing just fine thankyouverymuch. I've said this before. The hysterical global warmenists are trying to use them as an endangered species, and that's just stupid and venal. They've been around for more than 200,000 years, through warmer periods than ours and colder periods than ours. And their numbers continue to increase. They're hard to count precisely, because they are loners, solitary animals who move around a lot, and they live at the top of the world where there are no boundaries. But there are about 20 population areas where a count is attempted fairly often, and, I repeat, -- and again, they're doing just fine thankyouverymuch.

I state all this with a fair amount of authority, since my husband-the-naturalist, who has written several books about them, has spent many weeks observing them both in Canada and in their birthing dens on Wrangel Island in Russia. He knows quite a bit more about them than the 'environmentalists' who have designated them as 'endangered.' The environmentalists don't even know, or profess not to know, that polar bear scientists have tracked a mother bear and her cubs swimming 500 miles at a clip without damage. Polar bears don't 'drown' unless they are sick or wounded.

Just another power grab by the 'greenies.' Anything to give them another handle on the ignorant populace.

As always, you're right Meta. And how many university professors have saved even ten lives, except for that 74 year old Holocaust-survivor professor at Virginia Tech, who stood up to that crazed student/murderer and died for them, while the professor's students cravenly bailed out of the window of the classroom? Some of those students were great big healthy American boys, far better able to overpower the murderer than a small elderly professor.

Courage to stand up to murderers comes in many forms. Wouldn't you think that a college like Virginia Tech, one of the two colleges founded in the U.S. as "military" training colleges [the other is Texas A & M] would resist being disarmed by the government, at least by training its students in the strategy and tactics of unarmed resistance?
