Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

What if the election was (relatively) legit?

Ruling cleric warns protesters. I know it doesn't take 51% of a population to make a revolution: it only takes a 5% highly-motivated core or, as in our American Rev, about 30% support.


But what if their election was relatively legit, with only Chicago-style fraud?


We would all be pleased to see Iran return to modern civilization, but what if the majority do not think that way? What if the majority want a combative Islamic theocracy with a dopey selected figurehead in his Members Only jacket?


What if a majority value their religion over modernity and the Western community, and the protesters are mainly the urbanites and students? Then what?

Don Surber, at least, is of the opinion that your hypothesis is correct: the Iranians are not protesting that a ruthless autocrat is running the country, they are only protesting WHICH ruthless autocrat is running the country. He feels the other candidate was no better for Iran or the international community.

Heh, yeah I was thinking the same thing. But if that's the case, wouldn't some conservatives owe Obambi and apology? Maybe he could fill out one of those "Hurt Feelings" reports.

I'm sure there was fraud. I'm also sure it doesn't matter which figurehead is called president of Iran, as the real rulers are the religious council and those are never elected except by themselves.
The president and parliament cannot do anything without the fiat of that council, and make sure they don't even get close to testing the waters of what they can get away with else they are liable to find themselves before a secret religious court where the only outcome can be death (the main difference between sentences is the way that death is administered, hanging, stoning, shooting, beheading, or burning at the stake).

I believe the majority of the population in Iran are urbanites. I was wondering about that too and read the Wikipedia entry forIran - since the 1978-79 revolution, it seems like rural and small "town"Iran has shrunk. Now Iran is 80% cosmopolitan.

Heard on CNN this morning that the nation is also 30% youth or under 30. So urbanites and youth ARE the majority.
