We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Yankee Tomatoes

Short growing season up here. Ours are just getting going, but I already have some blossoms. Please do not tell me what you have in South Carolina, Tennessee, and Missouri. Fact is, I do like it here despite the high taxes and the short growing season.


We do not even bother with the Beefsteaks and Beefmasters. No point to it. Lucky to get a decent harvest of them before the first frost. Big Boys work, though, and they are OK. Each one of my plants is a different variety. I like the pear-shaped mini yellows, the orange ones, the sweet millions, the Big Boys and the Big Girls, etc etc.

We toyed with the idea of planting a garden but there's a farmers market down the road from us that runs all summer. Connecticut farmers only, great produce at great prices and we don't have to battle the critters.

Have you ever tried "Early Girls"? They grow pretty quickly, and if you start them from sets, they'll produce in 6 to 8 weeks time.

We're up here in Minnesnowta, and they're a pretty popular hybrid. The tomatoes aren't particularly big, but they're tasty.

"lazy" indeed! What about supporting the farmers if i start a garden then they will end up going out of business and i will throw my back out and then have to pay money to take drugs and see a doctor and have my insurance premiums go up ----see what happens when you start a garden.

That's what garden windows are for, start your plants from seed early, then transfer to your sheet plastic greenhouse with 100 watt bulb to keep the temperature up. Or, take a trip down to COSTCO and buy them in the 5lb box. That, a spot of mozzarella, some mint leaves, and olive oil. Add a glass of wine and there you have a light summer's evening dinner. Enjoy mine in front of the HD watching STARGATE on DVD.

Tomatoes. I remember early summer tomatoes... I once lived in Oklahoma. I now live in the cool, damp Pacific Northwest. Its' the perfect place to vacation in August. Some years we get homegrown tomatoes, other years they just decide to die from some blight. It varies.

Next year, try Big Beef. It may be a little earlier than Big Boy. Good reviews on the web for Black Cherry. Sun Gold is the standard of flavor for cherry tomatoes. Sun Sugar doesn't crack as much.

For the earliest tomatoes, Fourth of July. Skins may be a little tough, but they keep producing and get sweeter in hot summer weather.

If you want to try an heirloom, maybe Pruden's Purple, which is on the early side for this class of tomatoes.
