Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Gitmo is a “well-run, professional facility”? I believe Holder just said "Mission accomplished" to George W. Bush.

Gitmos is a well-run professional facility because Holder and HHC know that they are going to be operating it for a lot more than one year. Theoretically Holder, Gates and HHC could shut down Gitmo in about 48 hours -- that's how it was stood up. They could select a stateside location, establish a secure perimeter, and start diverting planes. Not going to happen like that. I'm sure the military would prefer to get shut of the detainee operation but there's simply no other mechanism to handle them and bringing them stateside creates more problems than it solves.

Health Care Reform.
While the graph might accurately reflect the source of payments for health care. They don't reflect the cost of health care. For instance a reasonable estimate would place the cost of health care provided to government programs in 2004 at over 80% of total costs while government provide only 45% of the payments. Which is why we always have 10- 20% inflation in insurance premiums. Wait for two more years when the baby boomers start going on medicare and the inflation rate will quickly hit the hyper range.
