We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
More snow coming tonight and tomorrow, and guess who is sold out of ice melter, salt, and traction gravel once again. Mind you, this is snow country here, especially with our global cooling. Guy said last shipment sold out in two hours. Is this nation short of gravel and rock salt? Is government action needed? Is this a case of "peak salt"? "Peak gravel"?
Maybe it's time to go back to the Saudis for a new deal on sand.
Using my lawn fertilizer spreader for salt and gravel has pretty much destroyed it this winter. I thought I'd pick up a new one at Home Depot to go along with the salt and gravel that they were out of. Well, it seems to be the wrong season for heavy-duty broadcast spreaders. What I need is one of these, but they don't sell them at Home Depot:
Is the slowing economy affecting supplies of other necessities? We have an ammo shortage here. All the Walmarts we checked for it last week had have run out. We were advised to call first thing each morning to find out whether a shipment had been received. Either supply is being curtailed or demand is higher than ever.
Ya' know, the Walmart in our neighborhood said the same thing to me. I was looking for some .45 ACP ball ammunition for plinking and they gave me this "none to be found" story. So I went to the local gun shop and bought a few boxes of Winchester white box ammo on sale for $19.95 per box. I think Walmart's making stuff up.
Ahh, yes. Well, most components aren't that expensive. The biggies are the press and the scale. After that, it is just 20 bucks here and there. Slowly, incrementally, with focus. Gotta have a long-term plan. :)
Then there is - but sweetie, this way I'm actually saving money. Nah, it prolly won't work for you either. But it's worth a try.
I already pulled out the "honey, you're saving so much money on stuff that we're going broke" line, which I fear will come back and haunt me. Anyway, I'm pretty sure she's onto some of my other acquisitions; the other day she was asking me why there was lock on my closet door.
Maybe the fact that so much Walmart merchandise comes from China has something to do with it. At the same time, the gun store we patronize has empty display cases and better business than at any time since 9-11. I'm most concerned about the gumming interfering with supply.
