We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.
King Solomon in Ecclesiastes, 9:11 (thanks, H. - I studied Ecclesiastes a couple of years ago. It is packed with good things.)
The Bible has durability by design. The Author knew the difficulties of writing to an audience that transcended time, represented all cultures, races, languages, intelligences, and creeds.
I’ve always believed the church possessed the same durability. It transcends both doctrine and denomination. The body of believers is woven throughout denominations and there is a plurality of understanding within that structure of the nature and interpretation of Scripture. The body is diverse, and with reason. I yield to God’s wisdom:
“If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?”
Each part of the body serves the Master in its own way—it has unique purpose in the plan the Lord has set. Accordingly each receives the Word of differently, yet ultimately guided toward a common understanding. This is why some see metaphor and mystery in the Bible, reading with and eye on translational issues and cultural perspective. And there are some who handle the Word of God as though it were a dead cat they were swinging around a room, striking out gracelessly at those with whom they contend. But this is only natural. There is the mind of the Church as well as the eye; it perceives what the eye has seen. All parts of the body are represented: eyes, feet, hands, etc. And then of course there’s the ass.
Habu! BD! This last post I've written! I've only just realized it might turn on me by offending you, having just quoted Scriptures yourselves. Lend your grace to my errors, sirs, and my sin shall be erased. You have my respect. I have written these words with no malice towards you.
Full fathom five thy father lies;
Of his bones are coral made;
Those are pearls that were his eyes;
Nothing of him that doth fade
But doth suffer a sea-change
Into something rich and strange.
Sea-nymphs hourly ring his knell:
[Burden within. Ding-dong.]
Hark! now I hear them, - Ding-dong, bell.
The ditty does remember my drown'd father: -
This is no mortal business, nor no sound
That the earth owes
