We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

A caveat: This is the sort of piece that I am always reluctant to write. I write this as a favor to our Editor but, in general, I am a skeptic about making any depth psychological speculations about groups of people, or about anyone I do not know in depth. It is all too easy to say that anyone who disagrees with me about something is either crazy or stupid, and that is not the respectful American way - nor is it necessarily accurate either.
What are we to make of this report from Gallup?
Dems see themselves as more mentally/emotionally impaired. (In an egregious logical error (cum hoc ergo propter hoc), the article suggests an independent causal relationship wherein party identification effects emotional well-being.)
Although I have no idea about whether a self-report of "mental health" has any validity at all, I would speculate that Republicans, statistically, with the Conservative and Libertarian flavorings of many Republicans, may tend to be more optimistic, hopeful, self-reliant, and to feel less needy and to feel less deprived. In other words, happier and probably better-adjusted people.
That is pure speculation, but it matches my personal experience that Lefies tend to be more bitter and dissatisfied - also with no relationship to income, education, church-going or age.
Externalization is a dangerous defence mechanism. It distorts reality by permitting a person to imagine that happiness and peace of mind - and likewise unhappiness - are usually generated externally rather than from within.
Also, as I have mentioned in the past, I see a difference in the "transference" towards government between Conservatives and others. I think that those who are more prone to unconscious parental transferences are more likely to turn to, rely upon, and to trust or hope to trust, the State. Am eagerness for childlike transferences in adulthood is not a predictor of emotional well-being.
Conservative-Libertarian types like me, I think, tend to view the people involved in politics and the State as being at least if not more venal, self-serving, corrupt, egotistical, foolish and ineffective as other areas of human endeavor like business, academia, non-profits, etc.
I like to think that this view has been arrived at through a lifetime of experience, a lifetime's interest in history and public affairs, and repeated (very educational) disappointments and disillusionments during my foolishly naive, idealistic, Liberal youth. Experience and psychoanalytic training powerfully introduced me to the dark side of human nature - against my will.
Yes, mine is the old story: mugged by reality. Literally mugged too, once, by a couple of barbarians with a handgun, in Boston. Alas, I was innocent and unarmed at the time, and therefore unable to give them a little toxic-lead lesson about my view of reality and of citizenship.
"I gave at the office, pal." Boom!

Re: Statisticly speculating
Republicans vs democrats statistics on "transverence" are enthusitically anticipated.
I agree self examine , as also self medication, only applies locally.
And yes, happier people oft may be observerd adjusting their belts but dem's are happy as any on that account.
But reserve otherwise, considering transverance childlike not adultlike behavior, unconscious as it is.
Some licit concern arises, how'd one get mugged by psychological training?
Choice must apply to that, training.
Unless of course, one is mugged prior to that.
Yet another consideration.
Let me acknowledge that after comments on about 10 threads, I have no idea what Leag is saying.
I share a suspicion about self-reporting one's own mental health. I've got paranoid schizophrenics and Bipolor II's that think their mental health is just fine.
There may be something to your ideas about where different groups put their focus. Certainly the Right has accused the Left of always cherry-picking the negative results of capitalism, Christianity, patriotism, gun-ownership, GWOT, etc. The Left responds by claiming that the Right refuses to acknowledge any faults in the above - as if that were somehow the only other alternative.
The despondent Left often knows narratives of history, but seldom much actual history (modern academic history is often little more than learning a grand narrative).
"The despondent Left often knows narratives of history, but seldom much actual history (modern academic history is often little more than learning a grand narrative)."
I've noticed this, as well. What they do know, they lack the foresight to apply. The neocons have the ability to apply the past and the present to the future. I know that's a generalization, but after enough study, I'll stick with my observations.
"Let me acknowledge that after comments on about 10 threads, I have no idea what Leag is saying."
Thank God! I thought I was going Lefty!
Nice job, Dr. Bliss.

Love thyself first. (Then you'll vote conservative. :)
Sighting indicia euphorogenic pistallates can only mean the party is still raging like Lapica's.
Where's that belt.
''Where's that belt''
the one in space, between Saturn and one of those other planets, and consisting of asteroids, or
the one holding up your britches, or
the one in a bottle in the liquor cabinet, or possibly laying under the empty pizza and Kentucky Fried Chicken boxes, or
the impact of energy released by the fast-moving fist or some fist-held object, or
the band or stripe of a material or color different from the adjacents as in a belt of greener weeds around where the septic tank leaks, or
the charged particles named by Dr. Van Allen which surround earth at the edge of the atmospere and reveal the sublime Northern Lights, or
the serpintine rubber thingie that transfers torque from a vehicle's engine drive shaft to the fan and all sorts of other accessories ?
Leag, you see, you got to narrow down or else folk can't savvy your lingo.
thats right buddy, the belt that transfers motion from the crankshaft to the ancillary components
ah yes--motion, not torque--right. my alligator mouth overloaded my mockingbird butt.
Buddy, mnenomic catalysts aren't leaving you far behind but I was lookin' for a vocal harmonic able to return slothful attentions to context.
Too often, individual folk's synapse misfire to confuse.
Addressing the topic of trackback to criminal heroics could cull many of your suggested meanings.
The wicked prosper and no man takes heart.
Let me put it to you another round.

Webutante highlights Karith Foster Debuting With Imus Today on WABC. She's a "four-fer" -- " A new sidekick for Don Imus who covers all bases: A New York, Texas, Black, Jewish American female." And, may I add, a babe.
King Cola is the subject once more. Context.
Try to stay on topic.
Donnie is self medicated coke head parading token pickannies and spitting libelous accusation towards Vice_President any self respecting Conservative who isn't libertarian rhino ought reach for a belt of vocal rebuke.
I got mine.
So, what do you suppose "four-fer" is, ol' salt?
i dunno--Imus is a sideshow, i pay little attention. yes these kerfuffles do limn facets of the culture, so they are important--i just can't locate a target sometimes. Yes Imus said Cheney was a war criminal but in the same breath he said hillary was satan --so i'll take that as a mexican standoff.
Donnie's libelous slander directed at President stepped him up into my playground.
He stated it as a true fact from his estimation.
True, by his noiter, as his next exclamation about his queen, which roused devils' ire because they don't worship a skirt.
True as his next exclamation that he is back on radio.
That's his "three-fer" one salute to America: “Dick Cheney is still a war criminal, “Hillary Clinton is still Satan. And I’m going on the radio.”
And lil boys and girls swoon under a pimp.
His "four-fer", indicia euphorogenic pistallates displayed as aprobrium.
Well, the real king of cola, is back with an attitude, in your face with nappy headed dancing girl, black, texan and bought and paid for.
That's "four-fer", buddy and the connation is sex just like "two-fer".
Focus on context for definitive rconnoitering.
Twas brillig and the slithy toves did gyre and gimble in the wabe.
but first focus on spellcheck for definitive reconnoitering
anyhoo, whatever outre meanings 'four-fer' might collect relative to Imus, i don't EVEN begin to CARE to speculate. and neither should you--even us crazy people need to have a spot of decorum you know.
BUddy, ifn y'all prefer, take a nap.
As I said, getting too shrinkological about politics is a mess. But, on the other hand...
If everything is "text" as Derrida proposed, I would suggest the pomos use eisegesis as opposed to exegesis; it's the difference between forcing interpretations of experience into a pre-existing model of reality and building conclusions based on experience. Eisegesis as a method of interpreting the text of reality is the path to madness; just how mad depends on how divorced from reality the narrative has become... And I think there are a lot of fantastic conclusions out there on the left; just think Grand Narrative... As BD said, the Marxist narrative.
Time for Monday Night Football. Good night, all.
Damn! That post was supposed to be in reply to AVI above. Savvy?
I think that's the concept of the ''dialectic''.
The establishment of a parasitic relationship with the natural organic evolution of language, in order to fit reality into an elite-selected jargon.
Whatever may leak out of the dialectic (religious conviction, inconvenient historical records, humanism of the western canon, expressions of higher human nature, et cetera) clinicalize it as an artifact of ''false consciousness'' and hey you're home free: disagreement as disease.
Got it. I did a send up of deconstruction months ago.
And a touch serious here:
There was something here at MF about six months ago about Narrative and the Duke Lacrosse case.
A risky speculation indeed, Miss Bliss! ...considering Dems tend to be more female, minority, urban and youthful, and the old boys network tends to be more strong ‘n healthy white male.
OTOH, while Libertarianism does champion the individual, it still (usually) takes group effort to remove all the ramifications from powerful malignant individuals and/or organizations.
Everyone gets mugged by reality in their own particular way (usually relating to some situationally relative “weakness” they had, which got exploited). The puzzle is how to re-empower that individual without them falling into some malignancy-led mob.
cmdr c, did you really just say that "while Libertarianism does champion the individual, it still (usually) takes group effort to remove all the ramifications from powerful malignant individuals and/or organizations."?
So you have to get together in groups to oppose groups? Are you certain of that, that individuals cannot oppose groups or take decisive action against them?
