We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Giorgia Meloni is doing a lot of what Italy needs to survive but in the process she is goring a few oxen. I'll give her maybe 6 more months before she is either murdered or ousted. The elite are looting the Western world and they will not stop until we break out the guillotines.
I read an interesting article a few days ago. Don't remember all the facts as there were quite a few of them. But I do remember one example: If we were to meet the 2035 goal for EV's and renewable energy We would need to mine and refine as much copper in those 13 years as we have mined and refined in the entire history of humans to date. AND that all of that mining would be powered by fossil fuel, a massive amount of fossil fuel. The article also addressed all the other rare earth metals and resources that would be needed to achieve that goal. It is literally impossible and perhaps a historic waste and misuse of fossil fuel resources.
News flash: there are no human institutions whose roots are entirely free from violence.
That may be true but every time I see violence on TV it appears that the offenders roots are from Wakanda.
Remember the saying: when you owe $100.000 to the bank you have a problem. When you owe the bank $10.0000.000 the bank has a problem. The EU pushes Italy too hard - for whatever reason - and the euro blows up.
But - like Trump - Meloni has to work with a hostile public service and judiciary. She is talking the talk, but now needs to start walking.
Of course it is impossible. You don't think the goal is to replace your current mobility with EVs, do you? The actual goal is to eliminate mobility freedom for the middle class and EVs are a unicorn for them to chase in the mean time.
The Covid mandates caused huge economic damage with millions of personal and business bankruptcies which we have not yet recovered from. Bidens economic policies have made it even worse. Many businesses are on the verge of bankruptcy and are hoping that the holiday season might bail them out. It is more likely that early in 2023 a lot of businesses will declare bankruptcy and this will cause even more unemployment and personal bankruptcies. 2023 is going to be a bad year and inflation shows no sign of abating. But cheer up! The unions are going to extort record pay and benefit increases from those businesses that somehow manage to avoid bankruptcy.
Texan99: News flash: there are no human institutions whose roots are entirely free from violence.
Quite so. Virtually all nations have been forged through violent conflict. America is not excepted. The complaint is that Joy Reid, an African American, stated this truth.
JustMe: The Covid mandates caused huge economic damage with millions of personal and business bankruptcies which we have not yet recovered from.
COVID caused huge economic damages. People were going to avoid public spaces regardless of government policies. The pandemic was deadlier in red states than blue states, even though blue states were hit early on before controls were place.
Re: Fauci Not to brag, but I realized earlier than most that the government response to Covid didn't make sense; If Covid was so contagious, why weren't frontline medical workers and supermarket checkers being devastated? Why were dissenting voices being silenced? Why were the number of "cases" being padded by including people with no symptoms? The numbers just didn't add up. Most of my friends and neighbors fell for the panic. They dutifully wore their masks and got their jabs. Now, though, I find I can't talk to them about Covid without implying that they're gullible or stupid. I still see people in Wal-Mart getting boosters and people in the supermarket wearing masks. I'm too polite to laugh at them. We have become a nation divided. Fauci has well and truly fooked the Country.
No, she focused on the US. You persuade no one, even when you have good points, when you try to reframe the obvious like this.
The top article in American Thinker (a publication I have grown suspicious of) is quite good, covering a significant amount of territory about what is wrong with the 1619 narrative in general in a compact space. If people want more I highly recommend the interview with historian James Oakes (CUNY, Princeton, Northwestern) criticising the 1619 Project on Steve Hsu's podcast "Manifold."
You have good reason not to brag. You are thoroughly wrong. Frontline medical workers were devastated despite extensive precaustions. Supermarket checkouts turned out to be less dangerous because of high ceilings and sufficient distance, but we did not know that at first. The numbers were not padded with people with no symptoms. A few anecdotes circulated on the internet, but it ended up being mostly crap. We in fact probably underestimated the number of covid death, because some respiratory and cardiac deaths were likely covid, but their hospital or state policies did not allow them to be classified that way without a positive covid diagnosis. If you get admitted with covid-like symptoms and confirmed exposure to covid - like living with a positive family member - and you die asphyxiated in your own fluids, it is actually dishonest to suggest that it's probably just the flue.
Yes, I just covered this on my own site and i thank you for mentioning it. It is under-appreciated.
Assistant Village Idiot: No, she focused on the US.
Yes, an African American focused on the America. Keep in mind that we were in agreement that virtually all nations have been forged through violent conflict. That includes America. As with most countries, some of that violence was wanton, while some was in the service of liberty and justice.
Assistant Village Idiot: The top article in American Thinker (a publication I have grown suspicious of) is quite good, covering a significant amount of territory about what is wrong with the 1619 narrative in general in a compact space.
Andrea Widburg: At this point, anyone who even says “1619” is lying and, if they have a Harvard degree, they should be smart enough to know they’re lying.
While the 1619 project sometimes overstates, it is a reasonable retelling of America's founding from the African American experience.
JustMe: If we were to meet the 2035 goal for EV's and renewable energy We would need to mine and refine as much copper in those 13 years as we have mined and refined in the entire history of humans to date.
That would be by 2050.
JustMe: AND that all of that mining would be powered by fossil fuel, a massive amount of fossil fuel.
Zero emission copper mining is on the horizon.
John Fisher: You don't think the goal is to replace your current mobility with EVs, do you?
It's already happening, and the trend will continue to accelerate.
Nobody knows how many frontline medical workers contracted Covid, because nobody was tracking it. We DO know that there was a shortage of nurses because a lot of them refused the jab and were fired. We also know that the positive diagnoses went way up when the government started paying extra for the diagnosis and even more if the patient was put on a ventillator. I'm sorry if you lost a family member.
Biden's framing is revealing, isn't it, that "we" "allow" certain weapons. Who is "we" in that sentence? What happened to the idea of a right, that is not dependent on whether someone gives it to you or not? It shows the completeness of the subtle shift away from even the idea of regulation and tradeoffs in gun legislation to the notion of "what we give you for rights."
Assistant Village Idiot: my own site
We often read your site with interest. Even when we are in disagreement, your views are well-thought and well-stated.
snopercod: Nobody knows how many frontline medical workers contracted Covid
Healthcare workers 7 times as likely to have severe COVID-19 as other workers.
That's probably due to not just exposure, but intensity of exposure. Working long hours with people who are very sick with COVID-19 means high viral loads. In this situation, masks alone are not sufficient to prevent severe infection.
And her mistake is not merely that she focused on the U.S. It's OK to look at one's own country as a place where we're naturally called to solve problems. Her mistake is to conclude that she has to reject her own country utterly because its roots are tained by violence. By that logic we would have to reject all human institutions, which would leave us with what? We need better judgment if we're to improve things rather than simply reject everything as inadequate, like the Princess and the Pea.
In other words, as is so often the case, it's empty virtue-signaling.
"We" also allow clearly dangerous people back out on the street, presumably because "we" think it's more important to avoid the injustice inherent in the criminal prosecution system than to protect the public by locking up the obvious eelbrains. Strangely, though, that kind of trade-off doesn't bother Mr. Biden.
He's not a serious thinker--wasn't one even when he was relatively young and healthy.
Texan99: Her mistake is to conclude that she has to reject her own country utterly because its roots are tained by violence.
What Reid said was, "For millions of Americans it's a day of cherished traditions. As Americans, we certainly value those traditions." Where does she say she rejects her own country?
Joy Reid has made quite a career of trashing and condemning her country, but I notice that in spite of all that rejection and contempt, she's still living here. I wonder how easy it would be for her to duplicate her earnings by trashing the US from abroad.
"It's already happening, and the trend will continue to accelerate."
Clearly demonstrating how scientifically illiterate we have become.
"Zero emission copper mining is on the horizon."
Absolute bullshit. The most that could be said is that they are planning for it to be so.
The "green" future of EVs or why the Quibble-DickZ are full of shit.
eeyore: Clearly demonstrating how scientifically illiterate we have become.
EV sales in Europe have already passed the important threshold of 5%, and in Nordic countries, over a third of new car sales are EV. China is at 16% and is a big exporter of commercial EV vehicles. Investors are pouring money into EV production, including in China. Be there or be square.
eeyore: The most that could be said is that they are planning for it to be so.
Demand for copper will rise, so new production technologies will be required. Investment in green technology is rapidly increasing.
"masks alone are not sufficient to prevent severe infection."
LOL! That is understated. The bottom line is almost everyone got covid and masks didn't prevent it and the vax didn't prevent it. As the deaths from the vax continue to accumulate it is quite likely that the Vax will be more deadly than they covid was.
With age comes wisdom, if you can learn from your mistakes.
Biden enshrines his mistakes into a self-created religious orthodoxy that brooks no heresy.
What's disappointing is how so many people won't pay any attention at all to whether the 'wise people' they put their trust in are actually all there.
OneGuy: The bottom line is almost everyone got covid and masks didn't prevent it and the vax didn't prevent it.
Masks work well in areas where the amount of virus in the air is relatively low, such as in not overly crowded public spaces. They don't work well when the amount of virus in the air is very high, such as COVID wards. This also helps explain why mask studies have come up with different results. See Cheng et al., Face masks effectively limit the probability of SARS-CoV-2 transmission, Science, June 2021.

It's been reported by just about every major news source.

But the CDC did admit...
OneGuy: In response to an FOIA request the CDC admits that there is no record of an unvaccinated person spreading Covid
They don't collect that information, so they wouldn't have such a record.
If zero-emission copper mining (as with all utopian thinking) 'is on the horizon', where is the copper coming from that will power the batteries to mine it? Your statement implies that copper will remain a requirement of green technology, so it's just an example of circular thinking, founded on nothing more concrete than personal aspiration.
Mr Michael Leahy: Your statement implies that copper will remain a requirement of green technology, so it's just an example of circular thinking, founded on nothing more concrete than personal aspiration.
Your argument is not as strong as you may think. One can use current technology to build new technology, a process called bootstrapping.
bootstrap, get (oneself or something) into or out of a situation using existing resources.
Bootstrapping refers to the achievement of the impossible. What you're offering is no more than 'magical thinking'. Were such revolutionary technology available, that would allow the mining of copper without fossil fuels, and necessarily not requiring itself what is still in the ground, it would render obsolete any requirement for copper.
Michael Leahy: Bootstrapping refers to the achievement of the impossible.
So you follow one fallacy with another. We provided the definition of bootstrapping that we were using. (Your computer boots by bootstrapping.) In this case, it refers to using the existing non-green infrastructure to build the new green infrastructure.
