We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Go Ask Beatrice: Notes on a Dishonest Decade. An outstanding new book tells the story of a wildly successful literary hoax. But it was just one of many.

"Germans Will Be Able To Legally Change Their Gender Once A Year
Why only annually?"
Because the offices that process the paperwork will soon only be open one day a year in order to save electricity and heat.
First Jefferson, now Madison... NGO's, government employees, and corporate HR are about the only sources for Race studies majors to be employed.
To be technical, the official position of the government in Taiwan also rejects Taiwanese independence; their position is that they are the rightful government of all of China, the mainland and the island inclusive.
"Germans Will Be Able To Legally Change Their Gender Once A Year." I like that, because it means that the one-time military giant will never again be a threat to its neighbors.
Unless, of course, those wacky Czechs use the wrong pronoun on a German tourist...

Nah. It's to try to reduce the chance that predators will take advantage of these laws. The U.S. system where your gender can change your gender back-and-forth, minute-by-minute is an enormous loophole.
indyjonesouthere: First Jefferson, now Madison: "A one hour Critical Race Theory experience disguised as a tour.”
The piece begins with the inflammatory assertion that the former plantation of the fourth president, Father of the U.S. Constitution, and Architect of the Bill of Rights, is now “woke” and does not fly the American flag. The first thing that every visitor to Montpelier sees upon entering the gates is the American flag, just past majestic statues of American bald eagles.
. . . In reality, every single tour Montpelier offers examines Madison’s life and accomplishments, including his central role in the creation of the Constitution.
China -- The REPUBLIC OF CHINA is a democratic NATION that has its government on the ISLAND of TAIWAN. The "Peoples Republic of China" is a totalitarian nation, IMO better described as Red China, with its seat in Beijing [Bay-jing, never Bay-zhing, a la Francais]. Referring to the Republic of China, Free China, as "Taiwan" is the sort of diminution of the ROC, that Red China has "Newspeak-ed" into the conversation.
And the added bonus of CRT. It's everywhere and a top favorite of the "educators"'
indyjonesouthere: And the added bonus of CRT.
The Montpelier Association pointed out factual inaccuracies in the article, nor was the Foundation contacted before publication to set the record straight as is standard journalistic practice. But you'll believe it anyway, even when shown the claims are false.
Why should I believe the associations statement any more than I believe the school board association or the teacher unions on their CRT statements. Deny, deny, deny is the way of the PC troops.
indyjonesouthere: Why should I believe the associations statement any more than I believe the school board association or the teacher unions on their CRT statements.
Oh, gee whiz. You choose to believe it because it confirms your prejudices, even when the facts contradict those prejudices. As noted, they didn't even bother to check with Montpelier before publishing the article.
CRT is racist. It is intended to be in your face racist. We have a burgeoning black KKK. You can see it in NY City based on the race of those attacked and the race of the attacker. This is a result of CRT and it's associated black supremacy racism. Purew and simple!
David Rubenstein donated $10M to the Montpelier Assn. in 2014. With that influence, the Assn. embarked on the Rubenstein Initiative which refurnished the mansion and more emphasized the issue of slavery in the tours. Here is a press release about the donation:
MONTPELIER STA, VA—David Rubenstein has given a ten-million-dollar gift to the Montpelier Foundation. The funds will be used to restore the Virginia estate of President James Madison to its original 1817 appearance. The New York Times reports that part of the funds are specifically intended to provide more context of the lives of slaves at Madison by reconstructing the premises on which domestic servants worked and lived. Rubenstein, philanthropist and cofounder of the Carlyle Group, has invested a substantially in culture around Washington D.C.; in June of 2014, he gave $5.4 million to the Smithsonian Institute.
Montpelier's website states:
For a decade, tours of the Montpelier house had included frank discussions of slavery, but a prominent, uncomfortable, and unavoidable part of the Montpelier story was still conspicuously absent from the visible landscape. So much emphasis had been put on the house, the Madison family, and the history of their achievements as people and political figures, that the legacy of slavery and the African American contribution felt like a footnote.
So in other words, the issue of slavery had been dealt with openly and honestly for ten years but now with Rubenstein's influence, it would receive more emphasis.
David Rubinstein is a member of the Aspen Institute's Strategy Group. If you're unfamiliar with the Aspen Institute, perhaps it would be instructive to view a few of their "Five Best Ideas of the Day":
- Inside the movement to rename monkeypox
- What happened to newspaper book reviewing (from the leftwing rag, The Nation)
- Why you should get rid of your grass lawn
So what seems to have happened is a rich lefty donates millions of dollars to a national monument and influence the presentation so that slavery receives much more prominent focus than his attempts to end slavery:https://jonathanturley.org/2022/07/22/the-truth-about-madison-and-slavery/
Having actually been there in the last few months, I believe the claims and not the foundation. Sorry.
Go Ask Beatrice: Notes on a Dishonest Decade
Here’s an alternative read without the paywall:
mudbug: slavery receives much more prominent focus than his attempts to end slavery
Madison could have freed his own slaves. But he wouldn't have been able to live the life to which he had become accustomed.
mudbug: So in other words, the issue of slavery had been dealt with openly and honestly for ten years but now with Rubenstein's influence, it would receive more emphasis.
As it should. An important movement in history is trying to understand the lives of ordinary people, peasants and slaves and merchants, not just the accomplishments of so-called "great men." Reconstructing the slave quarters, along with the main house, provides important context. Madison's life cannot be properly understood without that.
Keep in mind that slavery was a fundamental issue at the founding of the United States, and the aftermath of the struggle reverberates even today. Moreover, a significant population of Americans are descended from slaves, and it is integral to their own histories. Indeed, the very reaction to including more information about slavery shows just how deep the scars that it left in American society.
But as others have made clear, hagiography is preferred by many.
Ultimately for the leftist lunatics reducing cow flatulence involves doing exactly what they're doing now . By driving cattle farmers out of business with inflated feed prices, they hope to force all of us into low protein vegan garbage diets .In his seminal book, "Idols for Destruction" Herbert Schlossberg noted "no Buddhist country ever overthrew the government" (maybe Sri Lanka). Weak placid people will get in the cattle cars
The African slavers are unimpressed with your lecture. They are still in the business today.
I rather guess that none of that is in the new or old Madison or Jefferson tour. It seems some history MUST be ignored.
Another one of zachriel's famous "They denied it on the internet, so that proves it's all ok."
So (((typical))), eh zach? You're a (((cliche))).
(((Rubinstein))) claims to be a big patriot, yet he undermines much of US history and tradition.
His investment companies are also big into buying up Gov't contractors that support DoD and Intelligence, flooding them w/ political activists to influence the work being done.
indyjonesouthere: The African slavers are unimpressed with your lecture. They are still in the business today.
Millions of people are enslaved in the modern world, but it is not confined to Africa. Sex trafficking alone in the U.S. accounts for tens of thousands, but thousands of others are also victims of forced labor.
24 charged with forcing migrants into `modern-day slavery’
None of this appears to have much to do with Madison or Montpelier.
Then why is the FBI and DOJ under Biden hiding the information behind Epstein (who did not kill himself)?
The African slavers have a great deal to do with the Madison and Jefferson race tours. Without black slavers marketing of black slaves there would be no black slaves at either location for the politically correct to lecture about. There might be a small mention of Irish slaves but that would not be a favorable mention in slave history.
indyjonesouthere: Without black slavers marketing of black slaves there would be no black slaves at either location for the politically correct to lecture about.
You're probably referring to the European triangular slave trade. It could be mentioned, but it doesn't seem directly relevant to Madison or Montpelier.
Triangular trade network
The manufactured goods sent to Africa included guns, which were used to raid the interior of the young and strong. The result was the social and political implosion of African societies and the enslavement of millions.
As I said: no black slavers means no black slaves at either venue. That makes all the difference in history, if indeed you and "educators" are actually interested in history rather than race baiting. Black slavers are 1/2 the story of slaves in America and a part that everyone seems to demand ignoring.
That should read: traded to African slavers.
And don't forget the Islamic slavers trade in over a million white slaves. The education system ignores that trade along with the African slavers trade. The educators treat slavery so poorly in public school AND college that most think slavery only occurred in America.
indyjonesouthere: no black slavers means no black slaves at either venue.
That's not correct. The Portuguese, for instance, directly raided the African interior for slaves. The British and French just found it more efficient to give guns and alcohol to local bandits to do the dirty work. It was the capitalist system that made the vast trade in slaves possible: slaves for raw materials for manufactured goods for slaves. But, yes. There were a lot of bad people in Africa who used European guns to enrich themselves at the expense of other Africans. As noted above, the slave trade led to the implosion of African societies.
We understand that you want to deflect blame from Madison, but that's hardly argument. Madison could have and should have freed his slaves — something of which he was well aware, including Lafayette's admonition.
indyjonesouthere: And don't forget the Islamic slavers trade in over a million white slaves. The education system ignores that trade along with the African slavers trade.
Christians also took slaves in the Mediterranean. American schools probably don't emphasize slavery in the Mediterranean as it is not much a part of American history. But certainly, everyone should learn that slavery is ancient and practiced by nearly all historical societies.
Portuguese slaves went to their South American colonies. They didn't trade in America. The Brits nor French wouldn't approve of that. Again ...No black slavers would mean no black slaves in America.
And the black slavers were not the local bandits. They were local tribal chiefs that traded the weaker tribes to whites or muslims for whatever they could get. It was their export crop.
Everyone should learn about the slave trade but that is not PC in American schools. It is so much easier for the Gramsci instructed educators to lay it all on Americans. That's why we have never ending BS from the CRT trainers. That is what the Madison/Jefferson piece is all about. Ignore 1/2 the story.
And they still want to tear down all the founding father statues and remove them from history. Sad assed Marxists.
Don't forget the Jewish slave trade to the Caribbean and South America.
indyjonesouthere: Portuguese slaves went to their South American colonies. They didn't trade in America.
This is still tangential to Montpelier. However, slavery at Montpelier is integral to its history.
"All the old writers ... concur in stating not only that wars are entered into for the sole purpose of making slaves, but that they are fomented by Europeans, with a view to that object." -- slave debates in England
indyjonesouthere: Everyone should learn about the slave trade but that is not PC in American schools.
The triangular trade system is part of American school education.
"The transatlantic slave trade was the largest forced migration in history. . . They were captured in raids by slave traders, or sold by African leaders following local conflicts."
indyjonesouthere: Don't forget the Jewish slave trade to the Caribbean and South America.
