We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Below the bar is a strong statement of our values and politics by the editors of Commentary, actions to prevent the great unraveling of America. Please read it, and pass it on.
Editors Statement, COMMENTARY
Across the United States, a great unraveling is in progress. A rolling crime wave, under the guise of social activism, has left city after American city shattered and smoldering. Armed anarchists seized territory inside Seattle with the blessing of local government. In Minneapolis and other cities, a campaign to enfeeble or eliminate the police has gained full legitimacy. In Kentucky, the governor has vowed to provide free health care only to one racial group. In the private sector, companies such as Uber Eats have pledged their commitment to a policy of race-conscious discrimination as well. And major media organs sanction all of the above as proper and good.
The unraveling goes further still. Social-justice mobs have taken aim at freedom of expression, inventing new heresies daily and ruining the lives of those who unwittingly give voice to them. Forced confessions and language proscriptions are the order of the day. Poetry, fiction, movies, and television shows—including children’s cartoons—are canceled and excised from history. Indeed, all art and opinion are now subject to the chopping block lest they prove insufficiently propagandistic.
To rewrite the present, the mob has rewritten the past. They have forced upon us a distorted and grotesque version of American history. With the support of corporations and education boards, school textbooks and curricula tell of an unredeemable America founded not on the promise of human liberty but human bondage. What’s more, this history discounts the transformative progress on racial equality for which Americans—black and white—have given their lives.
Through the violent politicization of all aspects of American life, the mob aims to destroy the country as we know it and replace it with a new one—an anti-America that trades speech for violence, police for thought police, a free press for an indoctrination network, and the respect due the citizen for the obeisance owed the mob.
There is one way to stop the unraveling: Refuse the mob. We have seen again and again that the mob comes only for those who hope to please it. And when it does, no amount of apology will save you. We stand against the mob and all its aims. We stand against the chaos and violence, the silencing of debate, the purging of heretics, the rewriting of history, and the destruction of the greatest country in the world. We will defend the most majestic achievement of humankind, the United States of America, against the most ignoble impulse in human history, to tear down that which is good.
What we stand for:
We hope you will join us.

Very well said and a sharp contrast to the appeasing drivel put out by most big companies in the wake of this violence.
Well done and thank you.
I agree with it all, except the last point. I hope it never reaches that point, but at some time, violence will come before capitulation.
Well said! But..... how many Republican Congressmen are curiously silent and passively inactive in these times? Most of them, nearly all except for a few young turks and the typically outspoken. Our leaders have been failing us, and the ones who are silent now, are the most treacherous: They want the luxury of their invisibility and comforts while the nation they were elected to lead, burns. Don't let them keep these things.
For anyone who is moaning about the state of affairs: Activism starts with you - each of us. Vote and convince others to vote, also. Once you've voted, the responsibility to keep your elected choices on a leash falls to you - whether you voted for them or not.
I too fear that it cannot end without violence. But I also sense that there could be a lot of that happening off stage, already. Antifa's efforts, although well-financed, were stopped very quickly and the subsequent ongoing protesting quickly ran out of gas.
Well said, indeed. When the elected leaders fail, it is up to the natural leaders to lead. It is always up to the natural leaders tomlead. Some of us have been doing it for a while. It's nice to have company.
I'm on the fence with that last one too. It depends. If the data I saw is accurate, in the last few months ordinary people have purchased enough guns to equal 20% of what was already out there. I believe they are also saying "it depends" too on a functional lawful equitable intact system. If the system is not functioning, and is in fact encouraging lawlessness, exactly what is the leverage with which you propose to stand up to the bullies and enact these rational and crucial points of civilization?
This is a good start. The most important thing we as individuals can do is this--RECOGNIZE that the REPUBLICAN PARTY only works on campaigns and elections--IT ONLY WORKS ON GETTING PEOPLE ELECTED! It does not work on confronting any issue at the local level. The DEMOECRAT machine has been well organized in the same way the unions are well organized.
IF we are really going to be effective we THE PEOPLE in every small town, or urban district, or suburb have to organize within themselves to prepare to oversee the local elections. The R party will train you how to do that, but you must organize locally so that it is not just one or two people standing at the ballot box. You have to KNOW intimately the election process in your state. Is it mail in, is it machine, if so what year were the machines made? YOU and your neighbor MUST become well trained in this before November so we have half a chance at getting at least some of the state elections done honestly. Otherwise forget your yammering and get down on your knees!
Second thing that needs to be done is a well run website on the model of MF. This website can begin by listing which companies have pulled their advertisements from Tucker Carlson--this will give people an opportunity to boycott the boycotters. Mr. Kessler and others each in their own community need to get organized -- a thing none of us have any experience with, but it is the thing that is destroying us--the communist skill at organizing.
Understand that the Democrat party was infiltrated over the last 50 years and is now full blown radical, Marxist, communist. They want to destroy the U.S. and hope to change it into the new Venezuelan model. They are organized, committed and will take power by any means necessary. The Republicans are still the same mix of good conservatives and professional politicians. We, conservatives, have for years reelected those semi-conservatist thinking it was better than allowing a Democrat to gain that position. We should have made those sacrifices and pushed out the Rinos and weak conservatives. We should have made it possible for more decent citizens to work their way into politicial positions. We failed and if we continue to fail the better organized and more zealous Marxist/communist will take over our country.
Pull your money out of the large nationwide banks such as B of A, or US Bank, or Chase, etc. Put your money in locally owned state banks. The big banks have too many call centers that they do not control well. Too many individuals in off the radar places with too much authority/opportunity to eek out their racism without being seen. Move your money to local state banks.
They are thinking of making Juneteenth a national holiday. It is in fact a celebration of Lincoln and Republicans because "on June 19. In 1863, during the American Civil War, Pres. Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared more than three million slaves to be free." We should embrace this new national holiday and make Lincoln and the Republican party the face of it.
'lawless violence' is key. Violence used in lawful self-defense is not lawless.
If "We" can't even be bothered to learn a little history (facts that are literally only a click or two away!), I suspect "We" are doomed.
The Emancipation Proclamation made all slaves free as a 1st January, 1863 - an executive order made by Abraham Lincoln. The information was not known in Texas until 19th June 1865 - a month or so after General Lee had surrendered and the Civil War had ended. The news only got to Texas with the arrival of Major General Granger in Galveston. The slaveholders had withheld the information as long as possible in order to get crops in the ground.
Why would the honoring of a historical Texas date of significance be made into a national holiday, when the lawmakers behind the effort can't even be bothered to tell us why, and what it stands for?
A very good post Bruce.
I think the premise is quite correct that if people stood up to the mob instead of quaking in their shoes at its approach, the mob would be reduced to nothing. The mob is only strong because the ruling class allows it to be.
We lack men in the ruling class with backbone. Don't know why.
What do our ruling masters hope to gain by letting this madness spread across the land?
It gets crazier by the day and if you told me 50 years ago that these things would happen in America, I wouldn't have believed it.
And yet we all just sit and take it. I don't see any significant pushback.
This declaration is exactly the kind of misplaced chivalry, making ourselves a doormat, that has led to the unacceptable barbarism going on now.
Mobs laugh at those who "reject them." We must FIGHT BACK, using all of the same methods they do. And if our police and military don't do this for us, as is their job, then we must fire them, do it ourselves, and replace them -- even to the extent of exercising our sovereign right as the people to revoke the Constitution and adopt another, just as we had to do in 1787.
The KKK was created by Democrats unhappy with the Civil war. In a stunning irony the BLM is also a Democrat invention but with Communist intent and underwriting. Both organizations intend to harm blacks. But the Democrats have learned how to use race as a cover for their agenda. This latest temper tantrum by BLM will result in record black deaths in those Democrat cities where BLM has the most power. Coincidence? I think not.
The big banks are nothing more than hedge funds that seek bailouts whenever they pick a loosing position. I think Trump is using the Federal Reserve to divide the big banks from the small and regional banks that lend and service main street. I suspect the next correction will be his chance to flush the big banks down the drain.
Push back requires that everyone know what they are pushing back on and where the opposition resides. Of all places I found a good piece at Church Militant.
Gramsci and Marcuse were the innovators who pushed infiltrating all the institutions to change them from the inside. Even the church. At this point even a considerable part of the military has been converged to say nothing of the healthcare, education, enviromental, and social institutions. Even the scouts. The current group used to converge others is the BLM and the LGBTQ feminist marxists that formed it.
The Emancipation Proclamation did NOT free all the slaves. It was a wartime measure by Lincoln that only "freed" the slaves in the states of the Confederacy. I leave it to y'all to study up and determine why he might have done that... it isn't what you think.
The slaves in Union states were NOT included in the EP.
Lincoln freed NO slaves. Slavery was not officially over until the 13th Amendment was fully ratified in Dec 1865. Y'all want another silly national holiday, make it the ratification of the 13th in December. "Juneteenth" isn't it.
