We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

re California's Government Has Turned Homelessness Into Big Business
Of course it has. It's all about increasing the size of the bureaucracy and enriching cronies in the private sector.
That's what growing government is always about. That and buying votes.
re Schumer’s SCOTUS threat was truly unprecedented, then he made it worse
In the wake of Senator Chuck Schumer’s threat against two Supreme Court Justices…
Gun Owners of America have sent a letter and “red flag” order application to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo requesting a Temporary Extreme Risk Protection Order for the Senator.
It should be interesting to see if a judge will simply dismiss this as unfounded, ruling that Schumer’s public statement was mere political hyperbole. Even after the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court has called Schumer’s statement was “threatening” and “dangerous.”
It might be hard for even a New York judge to conclude that Schumer’s tirade wasn’t an actual threat when the Chief Justice and a top lefty law prof have acknowledged that’s exactly what it was.
Naturally, a confiscation order will have to disarm Senator Schumer’s security detail as well, just because he might get access to those guns.
Of course, since this application is based on actual evidence — Schumer’s own recorded words — rather than unsubstantiated feelings, a red flag order isn’t really needed. His very public threat happens to be a violation of New York Consolidated Law.
Of course the law won't be applied to Schumer because laws aren't enforced against the ruling class like they are towards the little people. Still, it will be good to have yet one more instance of the double standard recorded.
re: The 1619 Project.
It is amazing to me that the people who do this and those who support this do not understand that they are the new racists. They are the new KKK. Their actions and their intent are exactly what they claim to abhor. But they embrace it and revel in it they are racists pure and simple and no amount of truth to the contrary will sway them from their racist beliefs.
Part of the problem is Black Studies which has been racist and anti-white since they day it was created.
Maddow will be proven wrong in 2024 (if that is still within her lifetime), when Nikki Haley is elected.
Maddow is a perfect contrarian indicator, truth and future outcomes are exactly opposite of what she asserts.

About the "she inherited millions" link. Very interesting story. I would not have understood it when I was her age, but I do now. Husband and I don't live quite as frugally as she does, but we have lived well below our means for quite a few years.
At first it was difficult, but it soon became fun to figure out how much we could do for ourselves and how cheaply we could live without diminishing our quality of life. We are retired now, and all of that preparation has stood us in good stead.
And, yes, I suspect that people would be surprised by our new worth--but that's just incidental.
If past experiences with movements of this ilk are any indication, they are perfectly comfortable with being racists. If it helps them to achieve their objective, they'll embrace it. If it doesn't help them achieve their objective, they'll ignore it. Once you look at it this way, any discussion of hypocrisy simply falls in line with all of the other tactical devices: They are kept ready, only to be used when it is advantageous. It helps when you view it as war. Semantics are a distraction for the other guys - with any luck, it may distract them while you attack.
As soon as the last of our six kids was through college and established, we began to live below our means. That was 30 years ago, and has paid of handsomely.
I wondered what that smell coming from my computer this morning was.
She inherited: Why was it cash left by her parents, and not a portfolio of investments?
When my mom died, I invested some of the little she left into a welder and a torch. Which her grandson now uses to expand his abilities. Thanks Mom!
On endowments or charity giving: The local hospital is exploring a $350 million expansion, hoping to collect $50 million from community donations. As part of a non profit, multistate organization, shouldn't they realistically do it from within cashflow & borrowing if it is a good expansion? Because if the organization folded, I'm pretty sure they are not going to distribute remaining assets to the communities they were in. Just because you're a non profit does not mean there is no profit.
Re: The Homeless Crisis in California
I live in San Francisco, and let me tell you that there is no homeless crisis. Almost all of the "homeless" have moved to California from somewhere else. They can leave anytime they want. A "crisis' by definition is an emergency which requires immediate action. But the homeless aren't asking for anything. So there is no "solution" which requires money. The homeless simply want to be left alone; but they won't turn down a free sandwich.
With that said, we've got millions of bums, and we'll have to get rid of them, one way or the other. They stink up the shops, and the restaurants, and the trains. The smell is unbearable. And the tent cities are really dangerous. San Francisco is turning into a slum. And if you visit, don't even think about going out at night. Market Street now has hundreds of black gangbangers, who would love to meet you.
The multiple Clinton foundations are supposedly not-for-profits, but according to Charles Ortel's forensic examination of their accounting, are completely illegal and only supporting a very lavish lifestyle for their family and friends.
Frankly, after serving as a board member of two very popular NGOs in my community for two years, I was slowly exposed to their inner-workings and appalled to learn about the extraordinary salaries and benefits paid to their offices and program directors -- far exceeding those in the private sector. I resigned and never donated another dime. nor was I quiet about my reasons for doing so.
Most hard-working citizens would be stunned to find out the history and shenanigans associated with our huge foundations and NGOs.
It wasn't Warren's fault. There once was a fella named Daniel Patrick Moynihan. He was a very smart Democrat who nobody listened to. He made this observation many, many years ago when Warren was a twenty-something and there was very little political correctness... "You women are ruining the Democratic Party with your insistence on abortion.".... AND NOW YOU'RE PAYING THE PRICE.
The thing is that If I were obnoxious and bothered customers and wouldn't leave a store or fast food place they would call the police. They (the owners) would ask for a trespass against me and the police would inform me that if I went back they would arrest me. This is legal, the ACLU can't fight it. Yet they don't do this with the homeless. Why?
Schumer is also tribe. THAT is the real reason he won't be touched!
I took my grandson on a stroller ride through his great little friendly neighborhood today. There were a couple of Girl Scouts on the corner waving a Brownie banner and yelling to every passing car and pedestrian, "You know you want them!"
I thought they were cute and told them they were doing a great job, but I didn't buy any, I don't really like cookies.
I didn't realize they were part of a massive global sales movement. I thought it was their original idea, or their mom's. It's probably good sales experience for them though.
Ahhhh, yes. The properly connected have contributed enough to get a position at the taxpayer trough... slurp, slurp, slurp.
Moynihan recognized a lot of problems from democratic policies. The problem was that he never voted in any manner that would correct those policies. He never seemed to be able to walk the talk.

This doc provides great details that educate without panicking his audience. Particularly pay attention to his practice of keeping patients prone to prevent respiratory problems.
Actually Warren's presence (and kookie ideas, and blaming it all on sexism) that created a death knell. A woman with well thought out ideas would have done much better.
The Police won't respond to a stinky-person call for a simple reason: They are under orders not to put stinky people in Jail. There are millions of mentally ill crowding the sidewalks, and many of them smell horrible. In addition, they shout at people, push huge shopping carts full of garbage, and poop wherever they want. The jail isn't set-up to deal with these kind of people. Bear in mind that you can't put a stinky person into a room with other inmates; there would be a riot. And if you put them into solitary, then you just have a crazy person in a cage. That's no solution either. So the Police refuse to deal with the homeless and the insane, because there is nothing that they can do.
