We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Hmmm . . . I don't think they were too concerned about mentioning the fact that it was Muslims killed in the NZ mosque shootings.
Ye olde double standard at work again.

Anything that differs from the Left. I watched the game the last couple of decades before I retired. It's a simple one: stake out a position that is at a great variance with the current situation, point to the wide gap and accuse everybody else of being extreme. Most of my colleagues, fearful of being accused of what amounted to thought crimes, rolled over and surrendered.
The ambiguous results of educational reform are further evidence that schools don't matter that much. Neither liberals nor conservatives want to hear that, both insisting that if we only implement their ideas, all will be good in the garden.
The same flawed arguments keep getting brought back.
The Democrats shoul pay reparations since they were the ones who supported slavery, instituted Jim Crow laws, formed the KKK, and filibustering every civil rights law. But that needs to happen before the Democratic Party is banned for its racist past.
I'm not sure much can be done to improve the purely educational part, but I'm pretty sure of two things: the schools could be physically safer, and we could quit spending so much money on them if much of what they're doing is essentially neutral in effect.
Who knew the cause of homelessness? As usual, the Government, and do-gooders, like with the "opioid crisis", are fighting the wrong friggen problem.
It seems that everything but racism is racist.
Yes, safety should have heightened attention. The focus on bullying was an attempt at that, but it got co-opted into protecting some students but not others.
Impeaching Trump: “While our views range from proceeding to investigate the findings of the Mueller report or proceeding directly to impeachment, we all firmly agree that we should proceed down a path of finding the truth,” Ms Pelosi wrote to colleagues ahead of a conference call." Democrats only do "truthiness", and that, BADLY.
Scotland is our favorite place to vacation and the people are wonderful. However, it is becoming more socialist and crazy every day.
I used to have4 lots of interactions with blacks while walking my dog. They were always the same, "That dog bite?" That dog mean?" "That dog old?" It was an Australian Cattle Dog with blue-gray fur.
The causes of homelessness are complex, but in my opinion, mental illness is not the main cause; nor is it opiods.
If you actually talk to homeless people, you will find that many of them have just given-up. They lost a job, lost an apartment, and then they were on the street. The point here being that most homeless don't even want a job anymore. They are fully cooked. And most of them have decided that they are going to hang around and have a good time, until they die. End of story.
That's why any talk of "rehabilitation" or "delivery of services" is so pointless. Aside from basic health care and food, the homeless don't want anything. They can't be forced to go to work, or to go to school. In fact, they are as free as the wind; and that's the way they like it.
But the number of homeless people is rapidly increasing, so something will have to be done. The only real solution is euthanasia. I would issue a warning thirty days ahead of time; so most people can leave. Then I would go in with cyanide gas; and clear entire city blocks. I suppose that many people won't like this idea, because it requires taking action which is not good for everyone. Instead, people will argue that we need more "rehabilitation" even though we already know that it doesn't work.
The real problem is not the homeless; it's the idealists and dreamers who keep suggesting the same pointless, non-workable solutions. They don't like words like "truth" and "discipline" and "responsibility."
Where’s the solidarity for Sri Lanka’s Christians?
After Christchurch, world leaders stood with Muslims. Why aren’t they now standing with Christians?

Those people used to be known as hobos.
Ron, Mental illness is only one of the causes. There are the mentally deficient, there are the addicted, there are the brain damaged, there are those that have given up or been discarded. A basic problem is they are no longer connected to society and continue their addictions or self medicate to kill the loneliness.
The solution for many is to reconnect them to society but that requires intense adult supervision and attention. Most programs for the homeless provide things but not the human touch needed. Where there are successes, it is the human connection that was key.
Your sentiments are noble. I wish it were possible to reconnect all of the homeless people to a better life. But our primary responsibility is to future generations; we can't leave a giant mess behind for them to clean-up. We have to do it ourselves.
That means euthanizing the homeless, the retarded, and the elderly. And when we're done, there should only be fully-functioning people around. Not an army of cripples; and an army of caretakers, like we have now. I never want to see another electric wheelchair or nursing home.
What you have to bear in mind is that crippled people, the retarded, and the elderly impart a huge social cost onto the rest of society. Blacks also represent a huge social cost. Right now, we are burning through social capital like there is no tommorow. The kids are cynical, depressed, and covered with tattoos. Add to that the fact that the institution of marriage has collapsed, and you have a recipe for the complete breakdown of our social fabric. It's called anarchy. The elderly will try to solve this problem by creating a police state, with endless gated-communities, so they can go on with their merry lives; while the children starve. I'm sorry, but I can't go along with that plan.
You see, Blick, many old people, and some not so old people, feel that a new world order is at hand. Soon, medicine will allow men and women to live to the age of 150; or even 200.
And when there are so many old people on this crowded Earth, we won't need any more children. So who needs marriage? Through computers, we can create the illusion of a full life, so the kids will be happy after all, because they will be living their dreams. That is evil in its purest form, because its a denial of reality; and also a denial of social convention.
>> Where there are successes, it is the human connection that was key.
Agree. So many different forms of "therapy", and most are roughly equal in effectiveness (or lack thereof).
They can't all be right, and some are based on theories that contradict the others. One point in common, for all who are helped, is the human touch, the interaction with the person who is trying to help.
>> That means euthanizing the homeless, the retarded, and the elderly.
G_D Bless You, and keep you.... Far away from me.
I have worked with the mentally ill and addicted for forty years, and in my charity work, the homeless directly.
I don't think your understanding of who they are holds up to reality. It includes some people, but not enough to make such enormous generalisations. I don't think their numbers are increasing, either.
If you have good numbers on this, I am interested.
The article mentions the PISA exams. Every PISA report has a graph that shows each participating country on axes of test results as a function of purchasing power dollars spent per pupil. What you instantly see when you look at those graphs is there is a essentially linear increase in results from zero dollars to about ten thousand dollars per annum, and then near-constant results for expenditures higher than that—right up to Luxemburg, which is outspending even Washington D.C. at something like forty grand.
Conclusion of any reasonable person—increasing spending above ten or twelve thousand dollars per pupil is wasted money.
Disclosure—I edited math and science textbooks for thirty years. I’ve given it up. I run a little handyman/construction company now. That way I’m making something useful or fixing something worthwhile every day instead of writing state exam questions, which are worthless.
