We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

BD, I would like to think I'm wrong but I'm guessing you're playing both sides of the political fence here. You post links to some conservative stories knowing that the bulk of your readership is conservative but post links to plenty of progressive sites as well. You also, like the media in general, don't seem to be able to pass up an opportunity to take a swipe at Trump. You say about Trump and the media, "Duh. But Trump makes it too easy for them." You then follow with a link listing just some of the posiitve things Trump as accomplished as President for which he gets no credit from the liberal media.
So which would you prefer? Silky smooth, racially mixed, Obama who destroyed our economy, ruined foreign relations, bowed to foreign kings or Trump, who has restored the economy, done more for blacks and women than any President in recent memory but speaks truth to prissy people who don't like his style?
"I will not,’ he replied. But later he changed his mind and went. 30 Then the man went to the second son and told him the same thing. ‘I will, sir,’ he said. But he did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?” “The first,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you.…
The answer to the dope thing is to create a legal category called "willfully impaired." Dopers, alkys, let them pursue their destructive lifestyle, but stop calling it a disease and stop giving them a free out for their self-made bad choices.
Thanks for the trucking article. I am fascinated that they would try this under such horrible road conditions.
Ummm...if London's Muslim schools can cancel the LBGT Equality Classes then why can't the Christians who object cancel too? Are some of us more equal than others? But it is fun to watch two of the highest order liberal groups fight it out.
"Duh. But Trump makes it too easy for them."
Well, I'm not sure that is correct. In fact I think it is the opposite. They were out to get Bush II too but he made it easy for them by not fighting back. What Trump is doing is making it obvious to everyone that the media is biased and a arm of the far left because he does fight back. Bush II gave us the perfect model of how to let the left steam roll you. What Trump has done is to pull back the covers on the media and let the sun in. Given a choice I prefer a Republican with balls to one who has no clue.
Well, conveniently New Zealand has passed gun confiscation. This is short sighted and will in the end hurt NZ and hurt their citizens. I can't help but suspect that this was the goal of the shooter and the NZ leaders fell right into his trap. Watch out Americans, Our leaders are just as stupid and complicit.
Regarding the Electoral College - or packing the Supreme Court - I have the natural conservatism of Chesterton's Fence. If something has been there for a long time, consider what it is there for before tearing it down. That there will be unintended consequences does not even seem to occur to Warren.
Sometimes radical changes are needed. The signers of the Declaration and the Constitution were putting on paper things that were already facts on the ground, but knew that the next steps were very risky. Most were petrified that it might not work, leaving each colony less connected to the others and more easily picked off by one of the great European powers, one at a time. They didn't take it lightly.
Exactly. Trump could make the exact, word for word, speeches Obama was applauded for and would get nothing but criticism. Frankly, I love it that he plays them like fish.
Mr. BD, are you suggesting that if Trump turned into a model statesman, perhaps someone like Eisenhower, he would be treated any differently from the press? While I agree that he says things that do him no good at all, it is his ideology that the left hates. It would make no difference if he was a model statesman, if he was then they would surely make mince meat of him, and the agenda of what is left of conservative America, would not advance one tiny little step.
I'm not sure of that either...I do think he will intentionally poke the hornets nest to check the condition of the hornets and also let everyone else observe the condition of the hornets. Throwing rocks at the nest does get the hornets stirred up...just observe the recent McCain flareup. It allows him to gauge who is among the hornets in his own party, see Russia, Russia, Russia.
"leaders". There, as they used to say on the interwebs, I fixed it for you.
They know exactly what they are doing in regards to the Electoral College. The Left wants mob rule, advertised as Democracy. Those of us that believe in a constitutional safeguarded republic, are in the minority. Most individuals in their 20’s and 30’s couldn’t even tell you what that means. Individual rights mean nothing to left, they have utter contempt for the individual, the majority is all that counts. The second flank of mob rule plan is to allow sixteen year olds to vote. Ugh!
The test for all such issues would truly be made when a clutch of strident, hijab-wearing activists start effecting program cancellations just like that here in the US, only to snatch their hijabs off upon victory and dance, waving their bibles. I would dearly love to see this happen.
Bird Dog and his friends down at the IVY Club can't stand the fact that that loud guy from Queens won! And that he did it using the Leftist/proggy's own Alinsky tactics against them (and the IVY NeverTrumpers!).
HORRORS! Everyone at the Club knows you're supposed to just smile and take the abuse; then shake hands and have a drink together back at the Club!
Why, this barbarian TRUMP, he fights back! How gauche, how ungentlemanly! He even eats "fast food"! UGH!
When I attend a prizefight it's not to critique the punching, it's to see who wins, and cheer when a solid blow is landed. While it is true that Trump often acts in un-presidential ways, it is equally so that he wasn't hired to act, he was hired to lead. He's just good at acting, too. And by being outrageous he is not only solidifying his base, he is making it obvious that his opposition's behavior is even further outside the norm, even more attenuated, outrageous, and radical. We all know the progressive side's strength lies in their win-at-all-costs mentality and solidarity, whatever the issue. What I hadn't known until the past 3 years was just how truly consumed they are, willing to do just about anything, in the name of political advantage; there is no principal that cannot be squandered, no base emotion that cannot be pandered to. The extremism is obvious to others, too; For any example of outrageous behavior on Trump's part that can be listed, there are a half-dozen worse examples, some of them illegal, that can be readily attributed the other side. I think Trump is just busy winning the next election, but I support his leadership in the mean time.
I agree with Hammer. I think Pelosi knows EXACTLY what she wants: a chance for California to stuff the national ballot box with fraudulent popular votes if the EC is gone and we have a national count of the popular vote instead.
The founding fathers wanted the president to appeal to elites like Congress and state legislatures, not the general public. This current political landscape would have been their nightmare scenario: politicians playing to the radical fringe and selling out the best interests of the nation as a whole.
does not even seem to occur to Warren.
Why does the ostensible right insist on crediting the left with simple ignorance?
Stop ignoring the brutal downside of legal pot So true but where's research on pots effects on the throat and lungs? People i know cough, wheeze and complain their lungs hurt after a long weekend of smoking it. Its got to be much worse than cigs are.
Nobody is ignoring the downside of legal pot.
We just see clearly the downsides of criminalization - an impossible attempt to protect people from themselves, change human nature, and usher in utopia. Which has changed the balance of power between citizens and government, and led to abdication of personal responsibility.
It is likely much worse than cigs but the hipster generation runs the show, need the tax money, and can't admit they got it wrong. I like MMurcek's idea of being willfully impaired. Can we surcharge their medical insurance like happened to smokers? Maybe add fat people to the surcharge. Maybe HIV carriers? I want them to live under their old rules for a change.
Ocasio-Cortez Joins De Blasio In Call To Punish Asian Students:
She's a RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACIST!!
Trump is a classic New Yorker. They say what they think and don't care who's offended. It may be a weakness but it's also a strength. They used to go after Ed Koch for the same kind of behavior, but he was a good mayor. He didn't hold back, either.
The idea of 'Presidential' ways... um, which President?
Clinton seemed to have a very good time, as did Kennedy, with anything female that'd hold still long enough.
Obama decided he'd be an 'Imperial' President. Didn't get anything really positive done, but it sure was nice to have a King for a while, wasn't it?
Johnson - well, he was one foul-mouthed SOB and crude as hell.
So... Trump is decidedly not Presidential by THOSE standards.
Carter was ineffectual and indecisive at best.
Reagan was dignified and classy - but he was also an actor in the role of a lifetime, and he did a lot more good than bad IMO.
Bush 1... a non-entity in office, continuing on Reagan's momentum.
Bush 2... well, he did better than expected, but let the media and the Dems steamroller him rather than fight back. He assumed they were honest - and kept his mouth shut when it would have been better to object and explain what was going on instead of letting the media make the narrative. We might not have had an economic collapse if it hadn't been for the Dems getting in office in '06...
Trump seems adequately Presidential to me. I'm not looking for a majestic guiding figure - I'm looking for someone who can get things done and isn't willing to screw me or the country over to do it. (This does preclude all - ALL - of the current crop of D candidates for me. YMMV and all that.)
Right on all counts.
I think some years down the road we will come to realize it all went to hell in a handbasket with the election of Obama. I think there is a lot still hidden and even what we know is being spun and lied about. I think he was a puppet and whoever was pulling the strings fully intended to destroy America. Time will tell if they succeeded because it is all still in motion.
Re: Brutal downside of legalized pot
Well thank you very much, I am now stupider for having read that piece and I really don't have that much leeway in that area. From what I can tell, the brutal downside to pot legalization is that feeding your kids marijuana for breakfast is bad for their brains but if marijuana is legal there's no longer any way to tell your kids that eating marijuana is bad for them? Cigarettes and whisky are legal, yet I only occasionally pack the kiddies full of nicotine and alcohol before sending them off to nursery school - I think they somehow have gotten the message that drinking and smoking are bad for their health and they'll probably figure out the same about the marijuanas.
Oh wait - I get it! She's not worried about the kiddies when she says she's worried about the kiddies, she's worried about me! I'm the kiddies, you're the kiddies, everybody's the kiddies except her because she's so much nobler and wiser than the rest of us and we're just too stupid to be trusted to know how to run our own lives. Which is why a wise and benevolent God has put her on this Earth, to instruct us lesser creatures in the ways that we should live.
Very well said comments. I think we've barely skimmed the surface of the turd ball that is DC. And TBH I'm not sure that we can go deep enough to cure without it being terminal. DJT is moving the ball forward at least, no matter his occasional minor gaffe, so we can glimpse the enormity of the job required in returning to a sane, if that's possible, government. I hope his health continues to be good.
The disturbing thing is that some states have passed laws that their electors must vote to match the national popular vote--which is unconstitutional and evil.
I was with my 2 children a while back, using my mother's car that day, and it had a Bush bumper sticker.
A bunch of thugs on the street accosted us, a mother and 2 kids!! They horrified and upset my children by "mooning" us. It was pretty repulsive.
MAGA hat type attacks have been going on since before Trumps time, we can't blame him. No matter how Trump responds, they'll continue this kind of attack. Don't forget that it's been happening to every elected president at least as far back as Reagan.
There are three terrible scourges in our modern world. Tobacco, alcohol and drugs. I am 75 years old and I can easily name over two dozen people, friends and family, that have died from these three terrible poisons. My nephew is 31 and his life has been going downhill for over 10 years now simply due to pot. It became obvious when he lost a decent job about 10 years ago when he refused a drug test. He has two beautiful children a lovely wife and they have been living in his in-law's home for about 5 years now. Just until he gets back on his feet of course. He has money for his/their pot habit but somehow can't quite get his bills paid off or save enough to move into his own place. I doubt he will ever figure it out. It is no coincidence that he too thinks there is nothing wrong with pot. I expect his wife will divorce him in the next few years and he will go even further downhill from there. Essentially all because of pot. And we all know that pot is harmless, right?
'Brave' Ted Koppel only waits 3 1/2 years to say what most of us have noticed since 2015...and we are supposed to now think he is a journalist and a voice to listen to? What a coward. He waited and waited and waited to say this just as Mueller is about to prove Trump did nothing wrong, just as the truth is coming out about how the DOJ/FBI targeted Trump and his campaign for destruction, etc.? Convenient timing, Ted.
