We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
All public education has been designed and implemented by socialists and it is maintained by socialists. It demands that teachers and administrators be approved by its own institutions. It is an insiders game and the resulting behavior of those institutions should surprise no one. Of the socialists, by the socialists, for the socialists...but funded by the taxpayer.
I thought the comments from Alan Dershowitz on this subject were spot on. He noted that none of this scam could have worked if the University system had maintained the notion of earned grades, because all of these kids would have flunked out in the first semester. Now that the University system has mostly abolished grades, nobody fails; anybody can ooze their way through the curriculum and get a 4-year degree. While these parents are shallow and contemptible, this scandal is a consequence of the University system commercializing their reputation for integrity and intellectual achievement to the highest-bidding academic failure.
I think the author is trying to set up a plausible denial for the parents in this scam. I absolutely do not agree. The parents had to go looking for it, thus intent. They knew or should have known that what they were doing was illegal. They committed multiple crimes some federal and some state crimes. At a minimum they committed mail fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy, bribery and tax fraud. To me this sounds a lot like what Manafort did and I think if 7 years in jail is sauce for the gander than it is sauce for the goose too.
Look, it doesn't matter what colleges charge for admission. They can charge as much as they want. The reason that there is so much outrage is that the politically-correct poor kids can't use the same method. They have to depend on "quotas."
Colleges are now full of people who shouldn't be there, but are because of equal opportunity laws. And it's the taxpayer who gets screwed. We are supposed to pay the tuition for millions of thugs and druggies whose only qualification is that they are a minority.
If you wanted to be really fair, you would end all preferential treatment, and let parents bid on open spots in the University.
You have to feel sorry (but only a little) for the kids whose parents try to bribe a way into college for them. These are rich kids who were never expected to work for anything on their own, because they were given everything, and grew up believing it's supposed to be that way. When they wanted attention from their uber-busy, self-absorbed parents, they were handed a credit card instead and shooed away. By the time they reach college-age, the only way they can get in is if Mommy and Daddy bribe officials to ignore their dismal school records, and the only way they can graduate is because the same officials don't want to irritate their wealthy, important donor parents. These are the same kids who go on to jobs that will affect all the rest of us. God help us.
