We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Pertaining to people we know that have wealth... most of their children turned out to be leftists/socialists. If daddy gives me everything I want for free when I ask for it why can't the government give everyone else what they want for free. It makes the parents sick to have produced socialists but they did it themselves. They know the money they themselves have worked so hard to make will go to totally leftists causes when they die. I usually, jokingly, tell them they should write the kids out of their wills as they don't deserve the fruits of their parents labor.
I think that's a dual. Let me add in a point that explains why I think there are both sociopathic power-seekers and manipulable innocents, but most progressives are some combination. We make rationalisations not only to convince others we are nice people but to convince ourselves, after all.
They do believe that human beings are shaped by social forces, but also notice that there are many people who do not change very much, even under changed circumstances. Therefore, they slowly come to believe that the unconvinced are especially stupid, especially evil, and must be dealt with more sternly. And if that doesn't work, they can become harsher still. They do not at any point have to actually be cynical manipulators. They become something worse - people changing us for our own good.
Remember the CS Lewis quote that goes around on the conservative side of the internet so often? It is chilling. https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/526469-of-all-tyrannies-a-tyranny-sincerely-exercised-for-the-good
