We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Built this place 42 years ago with no fireplaces, along with a few other deletions. Builder thought I was crazy... ambiance, buyer appeal, yak yak yak. He might have been right, but after buying/selling several places with and without fireplaces while sampling various real estate markets over the prior 25 years, courtesy the USAF, I stuck by my guns, and have never been sorry.
Here in israel the winters are too mild to warrant a full radiator system. In the mountains where it gets chilly many have replaced smelly kerosene heaters with small masonry/cast iron stoves. They can burn charcoal or small diameter wood efficiently. Most have a glass door for "ambiance". Smaller safer and probably less messy than an open hearth.
