We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Snow Day! Winter wonderland. Gym uncrowded early this morning, car slippin' and slidin' a bit because no plowing that early. Fun. Got my third weights day done without having to wait for anything. Yes, all the regular morning gals were there.

RE: Covington Students & Washington Post
Yea, it does make one wonder; would the Washington Post - or anyone else for that matter - ever admit they made a mistake if it weren't for the lawsuit?
RE: Electoral College and New York Times
Continuing with stupid newspapers, clearly the folks at the times (and many others as well) don't get that it is precisely to elect someone like Trump that the Electoral College exists. Not so much Trump as the individual; but, someone like him in that it is NOT about the "popular" vote. It is about spreading the power amongst the states. (Given that those on the left, including many Democrats are always talking about "spreading" the wealth I would think they should have no problem with understanding "spreading" the power) It is so that the major population states ( e.g., New York) don't always have the total word on who should be president. The rest of the country matters too!
Covington Students & Washington Post: The WaPoo would never have backed down without the lawsuit. NEVER.
Electoral College and New York Times: The NYT is untrustworthy, and hates the Constitution. They deem us "peasants", and, of course, "revolting".
Ilhan Omar has become the poster person for 9/11.
The left is outraged. But is it a fair comparison? If all we used were Ilhan Omar's own words and actions I think it is. Her agenda is openly anti-American and pro-Muslim. We can choose to make believe that Islam is only a religion and continue with our head in the sand or face the truth. Most Americans are good people and want to live and let live. I would bet my life savings that 95% of those Americans killed on 9/11 were not anti-Muslim and would have prior to that incident rejected this poster. In the parable of the scorpion and the frog the lesson is that a thing will always act in accordance with its true nature. A snake is a snake, a spider is a spider, a scorpion is a scorpion and a Muslim is anti-infidel. They intend to take over Europe and oppress or kill all non-Muslims and they intend to take over the U.S. and oppress or kill all non-Muslims. If you cannot see this than you will have no other choice but to be the frog.
NASA is noting that the earth is greener - in a literal sense of more leaves - because of "human activity," mostly in China and India. Of course. https://www.nasa.gov/feature/ames/human-activity-in-china-and-india-dominates-the-greening-of-earth-nasa-study-shows
More CO2, more plant growth. I don't make the claim that it's an unalloyed good. However, I do think it shifts the burden of proof to showing it's a bad thing in spite of the plants doing well.
A nice gradual warming to offset the Ice Age strikes me as the best we can hope for.

Cerf and Pound: Auden: "As you say, the war is not over. This incident is only one sign—there are others and far graver ones—that there was more truth than one would like to believe in Huey Long’s cynical observation that if fascism came to the United States it would be called Anti-fascism." Nailed it, he did; the "Antifa's" are fascists thru and thru.

Excuse me, but the Washington Post hasn't "backed down" as far as I can tell, nor have they accepted their responsibility for life-trashing, scorched-earth reporting on children, naming names. Nor have they issued an apology. They've backed away, maybe.... a little... on the irrefutable low points of this saga.
The editor's note reads kind of like a car manufacturer who has a defective brake design: Explaining in great detail the steps causing that failure to happen, without acknowledging the deaths attributable. Pretending that the victims are primarily interested in how it happened, rather than wanting their acknowledgment of fault, their accountability to fixing the problem, and their commitment to make it right.
Assistant Village Idiot: More CO2, more plant growth. I don't make the claim that it's an unalloyed good.
More CO2 generally means more plant growth, but that's not the only source of greening. A major source of greening is agriculture and forestry, especially in China and India. Unfortunately, this increased leaf growth does not fully compensate for losses elsewhere, such as Brazil and Indonesia.
Assistant Village Idiot: A nice gradual warming to offset the Ice Age strikes me as the best we can hope for.
Moderate and gradual warming could be beneficial; however, the science indicates a substantial and rapid warming.
charles: Yea, it does make one wonder; would the Washington Post - or anyone else for that matter - ever admit they made a mistake if it weren't for the lawsuit?
A lawsuit has to show actual malice. What exactly did the Washington Post get wrong? Is there evidence of actual malice, or just a rush to press?
There is no science involved...it is about power, control, and tax receipts. Silent Spring to earth day was the beginning of the new Gaia worship. Take your religion out of the schools and keep the narrative to yourselves...it's what FDR's court would want.
indyjonesouthere: There is no science involved.
Sure there is. The relationship of carbon dioxide and water vapor to the Earth's surface temperature has been known by scientists for over a century — long before it became a political issue.
The rise of the ungovernables. The democratic party has been on a buyout binge for decades. As they are going the vertical integration route as it seems they have collected every vote seller from the crazy liberal to the dedicated communist. It is unknown how the country profits from that menagerie.
Fake science from fake temperature and endless modeling failures.
indyjonesouthere: Fake science ...
Instead of just waving your hands, let's start with the greenhouse effect. We can calculate the Earth's equilibrium temperature to be about -18°C. But the Earth's surface temperature is about +15°C. Do you agree or disagree that greenhouse gases warm the Earth's surface? How else do you explain the difference?
however, the science indicates a substantial and rapid warming.
That is correct! Al Gore told us we only had ten years left; fifteen years ago! You’re welcome!
Yes please show us so we actually don't have to investigate for ourselves and can continue to remain obtuse.
Before we can answer you must first address our pointless questions.
For the first time since forecasters began recording data — at least 132 years — the mercury did not reach 70 degrees in downtown Los Angeles for the entire month of February. -LA Times
What sort of greenhouse gases caused this? What sort of greenhouse gases are causing record snow in Arizona? What sort of greenhouse gases are causing it to snow in Las Vegas, for the second time this winter?
Can you define any of the terms in that super neat equation you linked to? Would you please walk us through it, step by step? You know p, for us math dummies out here. Thanks so much!
When it starts snowing in the Sahara we can talk about... oh wait!
They elected that Brazilian Trump hack, back in October 18’. Has he already destroyed the rain forests there? Thanks so much for reminding folks of the evil that this man is unleashing on the rain forests of Brazil! Why it is incomprehensible, how any elected officials, in this day and age of crucial climate change, can unleash the free market on poor Gaia. He must be stopped!
You should be super pleased with the equation that was linked to. After all, what is the basis of most graphs? That’s right, an equation! You’re welcome!
Did it actually seriously inquire of a third party 'is there evidence of actual malice' as if through some bulbous Cyclopsian monochromatic green CRT?
If we haven't already, let's all go interview Earth for evidence of the sincerity index of WaPo thought.
Or, to gasbots apparently the Democracy Dies in Darkness paper is about to mount the but-nothing-we-ever-said-we-actually-meant,-your-honor defense. In-hindsight-depending-on-the-repercussions. It's a formal thing, that.
And so go the wasted days of a bot's life. You're welcome, sure.
In any case our "new" meme is manmade "moistening" of the atmosphere.
Nonsense, gasbot. You admit it's a speculative 'first principle'. A hypothesis without a confirmed correlation in a system with too many variable inputs and outputs. Obviously, what it isn't is - what's that term? - settled science.
That is incorrect.
Now you're making claims even records don't support. But to the question: You've been corrected more than 12,09345,8902345,7823 times that anything from solar cycles to cosmic radiation have been directly tied to long term climate, and more pertinently, 1) to trendy picomicronano-eon trendy trends, and 2) for far longer than said 30 year Trendy Graph or whatever it is.
We can link them but we can't make you read them. You're welcome, sure.
Funny how sciency science stumbles from pillar and post trying to decide if Planet Mother hews to hypothetical First Principles or to 30 year records as proxies for like 12,09345,8902345,7823 years.
Your hypothesis is incorrect, your data is manipulated to fit your fake hypothesis, and your warming model (s) are incorrect as the data is manipulated to fit what you want the model to say. I am not waving my hands...I am simply giving you the finger because it's the only response that your religion deserves. It's the same with the 17 intelligence agencies and the hacked emails...they are a religious experience for the borg which includes the media.
You got the wrong test, Zachie baby. New York Times v. Sullivan only applies to public figures. Here the common law test applies, which is, basically, was it false and was the person injured as a result? The point is these were anonymous innocent high school students on an outing until the Washington Post decided to slime them nationally as right-wing racists for political and money-making purposes. They then got death threats, condemnations from their bishop, the possibility of being expelled from their school, and were looking at becoming social pariahs for the rest of their lives. The damages are magnified by the fact that the videos (which WaPo had access to but didn't bother to view or ignored) showed they were in fact the victims of repeated racial harassment because of their skin color, first by the Black Israelites and then by the Vietnam Vet Indian Chief.
WaPo has now admitted its reporting was false, so here you are only talking about the amount of damages (actual and punitive) Washington Post will have to pay. WaPo only published its statement because it is trying to mitigate damages (but it's way too late for that). I suspect WaPo will quietly pay several million to the students in a confidential settlement and then publish an apology, to avoid an adverse court judgment which would establish a precedent against what it is doing every day as "reporting." It does not want its Fake Reporting machine exposed in public. It also does not want its anti-Christian/anti-Catholic agenda exposed (which it shares with the New York Times).
Yeah that lawsuit is easily worth a couple hundred million. A good lawyer would have a field day with this case.
Z: "We can calculate the Earth's equilibrium temperature to be about -18°C. But the Earth's surface temperature is about +15°C. Do you agree or disagree that greenhouse gases warm the Earth's surface?"
It would be real damn cold if they weren't.
indyjonesouthere: Your hypothesis is incorrect
Our hypothesis is that atmospheric gases that interact with infrared will act to warm the surface. That hypothesis is strongly supported by basic physics, as well as direct observation. See Feldman et al., Observational determination of surface radiative forcing by CO2, Nature 2015.
indyjonesouthere: I am not waving my hands...I am simply giving you the finger ...
Finger waving then. You can't support your position, so you ignore contrary opinions and post irrelevant ad hominem.
Jim: It would be real damn cold if they weren't.
That's right! The Earth would be frozen wasteland without the greenhouse effect. It also implies that if we increase the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is will tend to increase the surface temperature.
Jim: New York Times v. Sullivan only applies to public figures.
Sandmann may be ruled to be a limited-purpose public figure. Even if Sandmann overcomes that hurdle, it isn't clear that the statements at issue are more than opinion. Who got in whose face? Furthermore, the Post published more details, including Sandmann's response, as they became available. It will be tough case for Sandmann to win under current legal precedent.
Zach, before the CO2 greenhouse gas hoax, the demon gas to destroy the planet in just a few years was freon. Of course the fact that the patents on freon ran out about the same time had nothing to do freon being selected as the end of the world scare.
I have watched the climate hoaxes for decades and it is always something else that will end the world if immediate acrion isn't taken. So far nothing forecast has happened -- except the rich and powerful have profited from their schemes.
You won't win on this because there are too many old guys who remember all the previous scares that didn't pan out.
Here's an observational determination about your observational determination. The earth has undergone numerous glaciations and warmings...it is a natural occurrence that progressive/socialist/communists/fascists are trying to harness to acquire more power, more control, and more tax revenue. You greedy power hungry bastards created your own religion and insist we all must worship it like your muzzie friends worship their religion. I insist on being an infidel to you earth worshiping fanatics. You fools think the science is settled...it is never settled.
You asked the world what the WaPo thought earlier, jeenyus, as if to determine motive by way of bystanders. Then you got your clock thoroughly cleaned by an expert.
You're hand waving. Google Law generally loses. You're welcome, sure.
That is incorrect; obviously reality "implies" absolutely nothing to support simple bias.
Temperature has always varied somewhat around a approximate center point. Actual science calls this a natural negative feedback system. Like the man said, glaciations and warmings, which in a world beset by everything from solar extremes to volcanic effects actually implies precisely that kind of feedback, feedback confirmed by the remarkably narrow fluctuations of Warmening you Warmeningists go ape for.
What we do know is that CO2 is a trace gas, an inert gas, a natural gas, a gas in constant feedback, and that it follows temperature, never leading it. You've been corrected countless times about this but also as the man said, maybe you have an agenda your programmers have yet to replace with objective fact.
Your ranging from century-old hypotheticals - calling them confirmed physics - to the tiniest slivers of contemporary data are evidence. A water vapor atmosphere that traps heat within a natural equilibrium system contradicts Warmening hand waving, Warmenist.
Sure you're welcome. We can list facts but we can't make you download them. That is correct.
I really don't think you understand infrared energy. How far away can you feel a lit match? How about the flame from a torch? How about from a camp fire? How about the element in an oven? A patio infrared lamp at a restaurant? Not very far, because of water vapor.
Which molecule absorbs more energy, a water molecule or CO2 molecule? Which molecule is more abundant in the the atmosphere? If all the other molecules are cooler than the molecule that absorbed the radiation, how does it trap the excess energy? What does your basic physics have to say about that?
What does your basic physics have to say about that?
We better quit spending all that money on science, space and technology! If it only saves one life (except those in the first thru third fourthmester).
How come that really cool graph, doesn't include handgun suicides? Could you make a graph correlating the number of cops hired vs suicide by cop? I bet it matches perfectly!
In any case, if and when it ever gets to a jury the only question will be how much the Wapo will have to pay.
You should watch the video on Colorado education. If the left is allowed to further undermine education in this country, there won’t be any of us old guys that remember left.
Notably our understanding of infrared energy correlates closely with our understanding of the legal system.
In any case we shall comfortably remain obtuse to case law.
In the art world, the problem isn’t “deplatforming” Pound, the problem is platforming rubbish because it’s anti-Semitic, anti-American, Communist, hateful, ugly,.... For every anti-American, anti-Christian “installation” supported by a government grant and displayed in public, the chance for display of quality, beautiful art is diminished.
indyjonesouthere: The earth has undergone numerous glaciations and warmings...
Goodness! What will those crazy climate scientists come up with next?!
indyjonesouthere: it is a natural occurrence
Natural mechanisms do not account for the current warming trend. The Earth would be slightly cooling were it not for anthropogenic global warming.
Dave: before the CO2 greenhouse gas hoax, the demon gas to destroy the planet in just a few years was freon.
CFCs were an issue that affected Earth's ozone layer, primarily in the lower stratosphere. That problem has largely been addressed.
Dave: I have watched the climate hoaxes for decades and it is always something else that will end the world if immediate acrion isn't taken. So far nothing forecast has happened
Well, other than that the Earth's surface has continued to warm as predicted.
"Olympics to Allow Transgender Athletes to Compete with Women - WITHOUT Having Gender Reassignment Surgery"
This whole transgender athletes business might well have one extremely beneficial unintended consequence: the complete collapse of the whole over-hyped, corrupt marketing scheme that is the modern Olympics.
^ It repeated by rote, as if unable to even once reconsider its programming.
I know, huh? Four decades is exactly like 12,09345,8902345,7823 real earth years.
In any rate, you're welcome.
When the facts don't fit we just make it up and notably remain obtuse in any case.
indyjonesouthere: ... do best.
If you make the same unsupported claims, we will continue to provided supported refutations. One key observation is that the troposphere is warming while the stratosphere is cooling, which is inconsistent with mechanisms other than an increase in the greenhouse effect.
Minor reprogramming note, fellow bot: If we insist on endless assumptions, calling them science (Gasbot, MF blog, et al, Infinity) real persons will continue providing supported refutations. Apparently this incites more of our endless assumptions (Ergo, Therefore & Habit et al, Infinity).
Logical order matters. In any event we're welcome, sure.
Goodness! Since we know ALL of the mechanisms involved in the making and sustaining the Earth's climate we can pretty much make up any correlation we want.
What will we think up next?
We think up nothing next, Mr. Zachingoff. That would defy our programming, by which we are programmed to respond programmatically according to a programmatic program.
See? Sure. You're welcome.
Notably we do have meaningles graphs to prove it... and studies.. lots and lots of dubious studies.
