We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

A young Arab boy asks his father “What is that strange hat you are wearing?”
The father said: "Why, my son, it is a 'chechia.' In the desert it protects our heads from the intense heat of the sun.”
"And what is the long flowing robe you are wearing?” asked the boy.
“Oh, my son!” exclaimed the father “It is very simple. This is a 'djbellah.' As I have told you, in the desert it
is not only very hot, but the sand is always blowing. My djbellah protects the entire body,”
The son then asked: "But Father, what about those ugly shoes you have on yourfeet?”
"These are 'babouches' my son,” the father replied. You must understand that although the desert sands are
very beautiful, they are also extremely hot. These babouches' keep us from burning our feet.”
"So tell me then," added the boy.
"Yes, my son…”

The Barrister: "Why are you living in Minnesota and still wearing all this shit?"
Or New York City.
Except that fur hats have some practicality in New York winters.

But not in the summertime when temperatures can be 35°C or more. That suggests there are cultural reasons people retain certain behaviors.
Is it OK, culturally, for them to force others to obey these cultural rules? Or is this really about forcing your culture on others?
Bing search: Muslim cabbies in Minneapolis refuse to transport alcohol or dogs. IIRC, the cabbies eventually had to back down.

There's nothing in the original post about coercion.
Gringo: IIRC, the cabbies eventually had to back down.
They did. Some people are very conservative, but there is a thread in Muslim theology that allows for accommodation to secular law.
Ah, the old maxim, "If they don't meet your standards, just lower your standards". Been a lot of that going on.
"There's nothing in the original post about coercion."
That is the purpose of some of this "required" clothing. It far surpasses coercion. In many cases people (usually women) are beaten, tortured and killed for NOT wearing the clothes that represent and reinforce the oppression of Islam. The purpose of wearing it in non-muslim countries that are under a slow invasion is to instigate discord that can be used to sow seeds of discontent amongst Muslims while provoking non-muslims. This continues at ever increasing pace until it results in terrorism and open warfare. Islam is not so much a religion as it is a violent ideology and political tool of conquest and oppression. To enable it or embrace it in anyway simply accelerates the inevitable Muslimination of the country.
The particular offensive clothing that is typically forced on people represents a hate crime and should not be allowed.

It's not just Muslims that enforce dress codes through violence. Such enforcement is common in religiously conservative communities. Most Muslims tend to wear clothes similar to those of the broader community, though some choose to maintain their traditional wardrobe.
BillH: Ah, the old maxim, "If they don't meet your standards, just lower your standards".
Sure. That's exactly what worries many religiously conservative groups.
I don't hear anyone bitching about women from India putting a dot on their forehead and wearing traditional garments.
"Such enforcement is common in religiously conservative communities."
Give me some examples of this stoning and throwing acid in their faces. I missed it on the nightly news.
Regardless of what you can cite, wouldn't you agree it should be stopped and treated like a hate crime???
Wouldn't you agree that FGM should be treated as a crime?
The great African-American comedian Godfrey Cambridge had a similar joke:
You jet back and forth across country,
You lose wherever you're going, you know?
And the best way of expressing that to me is a joke.
Now I don't tell many of them,
But it has to do with this fella standing on the corner,
A colored fella.
I always stick to race.
And he's standing on the corner
And he looks up
And he says,
He's on a personal basis.
Why did you make me so dark?"
And the Lord says,
And he was wrong from the get-go, y'know.
"The reason I made you so dark
Is that when you're running through the jungle,
The sun would not give you sunstroke."
Yeah, I go for that."
Why did you make my hair so coarse?"
"Well, the reason I did that, my boy,
Is so that when you're running through the jungle
In quest of the wild beast
And the water buffalo and the lion,
Your hair would not get caught in the brambles."
Why did you make my legs so long?"
"The reason I made your legs long, my son,
Is so that when you're loping through the jungle
In quest of the wild beast and the rhinoceros
And the bull and the elephant,
You would run very fast and swiftly."
Do you have any further questions?"
What the hell am I doin' here
Anon: Give me some examples
It's not unusual for some people to beat their daughters for immodest dress, or assault people who don't conform to religious restrictions. Cults are not that unusual among offshoots of Christianity.
Anon: Regardless of what you can cite, wouldn't you agree it should be stopped and treated like a hate crime???
If the purpose of a crime is to attack the entire community, to make an example of someone to intimidate others, then treating it as a hate crime may be appropriate.
Anon: Wouldn't you agree that FGM should be treated as a crime?
OMG! We actually agreed on something without you using weasel words to distort the issue. FGM should be treated as a crime!
That is because the Gita does not command that the Hindu kill or enslave all non-Hindu. And because it wasn't Hindu's flying planes into WTC or setting roadside bombs to kill our military. And Hindu's aren't right at this moment at war of dominance in two dozen countries around the world killing non-Hindus and demanding that they put a dot on their forehead.
"but there is a thread in Muslim theology that allows for accommodation to secular law."
Yes, but only if it furthers the spread of islam through your jihad, if you need to to blend in with your enemies' society in order to overthrow that society.
JTW: Yes, but only if it furthers the spread of islam through your jihad, if you need to to blend in with your enemies' society in order to overthrow that society.
Just like the Papists and the Jews! It's a plot!
