We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Beto donors: Most of the money in the Beto campaign is coming from outside Texas. I am looking for stories on MSNBC and Yahoo News showing the rage from the left at all this money ruining politics. Surely these stories exist. If not, it would mean that liberals don't really hate money in politics. FoxNews can't be right. It's not that liberals hate money when it helps them to advance their socialist causes.
Please help me find these stories. I am lost without them.
Re: tip of the racism iceberg
Michael Brown was certainly about race. It was an effort to gin up a narrative of white racist cops going around killing innocent black kids in spite of the fact that he was a thug trying to get a white cop's gun.
But the article is right that we are seeing the tip of the racist iceberg. We have colleges offering classes in how white people are the cause of all the problems of the world and how white people have some sort of privilege.
About the guy who blew his liver (and perhaps his kidneys) with green tea supplements:
Green tea supplements contain large quantities of Vitamin K, as do other "healthy" foods like fish oil, ginseng, and canola. If a liver or kidney is already stressed, or you have a clotting disorder and are taking Coumadin, these are tricky things to add to a diet. Taking crazy amounts of vitamins is not always a great idea.
Taking crazy amounts of anything (I can think of) is never a good idea. “Everything in moderation, including moderation.” -Oscar Wilde.
"Megyn Kelly’s blackface comments are just the tip of the racism iceberg"
If you have been paying attention the past 50 years you might have noticed that leftists are obsessed sex, money and race. That's why they are always accusing other people of being sexist, greedy capitalists, or racist.
I don't understand how the green tea story even gets published. There are so many other things out there looking to kill us that one guy having a reaction to green tea isn't even background noise. Aspirin kills over 3,000 a year. Someone is going to have a reaction to pretty much anything.
"The economy looks like it will expand above a 3% rate in 2018. That hasn’t happened since 2005.”
Here! Here! MODERATION is always the key.
Sorry about this guy, but he was not in good health (genetically) and reacted in an extreme manner to his plight. Note, nothing was written about other things he might have done to lose weight, such as adjusting his diet or a sound exercise program; just his response to family history, by overdoing a supplement without doing any research!
Similarly, people have been known to die from drinking too much water or breathing too much concentrated oxygen! One can take anything to an extreme and cause health problems especially when you're genetically behind the 8-ball!
Oh, and let's all thank Big Pharma and its minion, Bird Dog (who hates supplements) for bringing this scare tactic article against supplements, to our attention!
See my comment above ; Big Pharma wants to scare you and Bird Dog hates supplements.
This shallow, very one-sided article was likely brought to you by Big Pharma which wants nothing more than effective supplements highly regulated or banned, because much cheaper supplements compete directly with expensive and often less effective drugs churned out by Big Pharma!
As for inexpensive, highly effective aspirin, see recent articles where so-called "reasearch studies" have declared that taking it as a preventive measure for various coditions, is "NOT effective." Hmmmm....
Healthy people take money away from the HUGE profits Big Pharma racks up for treating symptoms, rather than curing or returning people to good health. FOLLOW THE MONEY!
"New York Times condemns Trump for ‘toxic environment’ right after publishing a fantasy of assassinating him"
First condemn the election as unfair. Next attack the electoral college as wrongheaded. And now suggest assassination as a hopeful premise?
What is this George Bush Attack plan 2.0 ?
The left is like the most inept football team ever. Whenever they are down they run the same old play that has failed them the last 40 times the tried it.
re Backfire Economics: Double-digit increases in US steel prices to the highest in the world are crippling US manufacturers
If Trump keeps these tariffs in place, a deteriorating economy caused in no small part by tariffs could kill his re-election chances.
re Megyn Kelly’s Blackface Comments Are Just The Tip Of The Racism Iceberg
Mrs. feeblemind says the network was looking for an excuse to dump her and this was their chance. Had nothing to do with wrong think according to her.
He wasn't the only one. This Woman Suffered Organ Damage After Taking Green-Tea Extract Supplements.
A federal review in Canada concluded that while the majority of people who take green-tea extract “in any form, do so without harm,” they also found that “there may be a link between the use of green tea extract and a risk of rare and unpredictable liver injury.”
The warnings are nothing new—including in the U.S. In 2014, The American College of Gastroenterology released guidelines on drugs and herbal supplements that can cause liver injury. Topping the list of herbals? You guessed it: green-tea extract. Some pills, they note in the press release, can contain more than 700 milligrams (mg) of catechins (the active compound in green tea), whereas a cup of green tea contains 50 to 150 mg, and people tend to take these pills multiple times a day.
Oh, and let's all thank Big Pharma and its minion, Bird Dog (who hates supplements) for bringing this scare tactic article against supplements, to our attention!Scare tactic? Informing the public of what appears to be a sufficiently documented danger?
Take multiple capsules per day of green tea supplements/extract for 6 months and then get back to us about how good they are for you.
Another supplement to treat with caution is so-called "oil of wintergreen" (methyl salicylate). 5 ml (about a teaspoon) of methyl salicylate is equivalent to five standard 325-mg aspirin tablets. A dangerous dose for a 150-lb. person would be about 30 aspirin tablets, or 5 tsp of ingested oil of wintergreen. Chronic doses, including topical applications, can add up. You've just got to be careful with concentrates of anything, and check labels.
This goes much deeper than just green tea. Many supplements are dangerous and some, from China, are actually mixed with toxins. I understand the desire at age 50 to feel like you did when you were 18 but understand that the scammers pushing these supplements know this and use your ego and dreams against you. None of these supplements, magic berries, beets or vitamins do didly squat for your health or good looks. They are all scams designed to extract billions from stupid Americans.

Megan Kelly a racist? Why should I trust Gawker and Media Matters?
DANG! The NYT gives me one more unnecessary reason to despise and detest them!
One advantage to being old is you have actually seen the changes in this country over the last 75 years. The racism that was 'mostly' aimed at black people began to decline in the 60's and by the 70's to 80's had almost completely disappeared. Sure there were still some people on both sides of the race issue who still harbored negative feeling but it was an extraordinary sea change in this country to a far less racial society. Then the minorities began to resurrect racism to benefit their causes and their politics. it was so successful that it has now reached epic proportions. On CNN everything the right does is racist. In most government and government related entities racism against whites (and males) is the rule today. So yes the U.S. is a racist country, racist against whites.

Spelling nazi sez:
that oughta' be "Hear, Hear!" google it.
Best course of action. Never mention black people or anything having to do with race. Pretend that you don't know that there is such a thing as race.
If anyone brings up the subject of race, or any subject that may lead to any racial observations in your presence, just turn and run away.
Whatever you might say is wrong, and anything and everything you say having to do with race and/or black people can and will be held against you, without the intervention of a court of law. There is nothing you can say or do to correct any misunderstanding. You will only dig yourself in deeper with any attempt to apologize or clarify anything, and at a minimum you will lose your job and be shunned in polite society, you racist bastard.
I've heard the expression, "When it comes to charges of racism, people are guilty until proven guilty" - in other words racism charges are akin to getting arrested by the Khmer Rouge (from 1974 onwards everyone arrested by the KR was executed). It's a one-way street.
Windy intones: They are all scams designed to extract billions from stupid Americans.
Bullshit on its face, Windy, especially from a guy who at your age downs whole packages of Oreos and brags about it.
A reasonable generalization is crazy in your world? How exactly is the fact that the largest lobby in the nation has a vast impact on medicine and its philosophy crazy? Or are you just reacting instinctively?
Your position is that an anecdotal base of two, both of whom abused the substance, constitutes evidence that the Pharmaceuticals operate in good faith, thus refuting b48's completely reasonable observation about them?
I'm sure you could go find ten more cases but your premise would still be flawed, and for the same reasons.
The mixed American diet is so bad for health that only starvation ketosis - and obsessive over-exercise - is seen by many faddists as its cure. This myopia and denial is compounded by their habitual reaction against sound nutrition and prevention, which leads to their instinctive rejection of anything not approved by their popular lifestyle.
Health is not their primary interest, which is why they don't research it nearly as often as they cite column inches favorable to their biases.
Are you calling the conclusion of The American College of Gastroenterology anecdotal?
Most likely they were - she was a liability and not proving to be the draw they were expecting. The comment was innocuous, the response over the top - and to supposedly have 'staff crying over what she said' is simply ludicrous.
Is that a misdirection? Obviously I'm calling your contribution to the misuse of information anecdotal. Go find another hundred cases and you'd still be barking up the wrong tree. The only question is if you know why you do it.
I do eat a whole bag of oreos. I have two candy bars every night, I like ice cream in the evenings too in addition to my candy bars. I can eat a whole family size bag of chips. I buy chocolate by the pound in the bulk aisle of the grocery store. I eat peanut butter out of the jar with a spoon or with a dozen or so ritz crackers. I could go on and on about my snacking/junk food habit. And yet none of it is harmful. My liver is excellent, I can hike steep trails all day. My weight is good, Why??? Because all of those things I eat are just food. You may not want to eat them, some people will consider it bad to eat sugary carbs or salty greasy chips but they are just food. No one writs a book about them to make a million dollars of the poor schlubs who fall for fad diets ands magic berries just discovered in the Amazon. It is simply food. Won't hurt you, won't give you diabetes, won't cause cancer, won't "make" you gain weight. I should add that in addition to my snacking habit I consume three decent meals a day, I'm a meat and potatoes kind of eater and like all vegetables. I don't do fads diets but will confess that in my early 20's when I first became interested in nutrition I read all the same books you have adopted as your bible. They are convincing, even mind controlling in their intensity. It is easy to believe the crap they are allowed to print thanks to our 1st amendment. BUT, here's the thing: You can write whatever you want, tell lies, make things up, no one can stop you. You can also "pretty much" sell whatever you want, supplements, magic berries and beets, etc. BUT you cannot sell these magic foods/supplements AND claim that they do the magic thing unless you can prove it. And interestingly the purveyors of these magic foods stop short of advertising their magical abilities. Instead they will cite a book written by Gary Taubes or some other wizard of magical food. WHY??? Because they cannpot prove diddly squat about their magic berries and supplements and they don't want to go to jail for lying. Think about it...
I was visiting my sister at her daughters house a few months back. She has recently discovered green tea and read a few of the books about how our government is ruining our health. And of course she had made a friend at her gym who was helping her learn about how bad big pharma is. Her daughter is married to a doctor so I asked her how she could believe that big pharma is intentionally giving us bad medicine and intentionally withholding the truth about the supplements and spices that will cure all our ills and believe that one million doctors are complicit in this fraud? How do you believe all the bad things about big pharma and still have any trust in doctors? Doctors are smart, educated and this is their business 24/7/365. Do you really believe the doctors are all lying to us so big pharma can make a couple more billion a year? Can you be that stupid?
What you are really talking about is the whole black helicopter/FEMA camp paranoid nonsense. You have to be a few bricks shy of a full load to even contemplate this BS.
As for big pharma lobbying the government, do they have any other choice. The government has inserted itself into their business. Now, I happen to believe that there is a place for government control and oversight of pharmaceutical companies and doctors, etc. So I'm not objecting. But the point is the government is trying to control big pharma and the government makes mistakes, a LOT of mistakes so big pharma has to have some input into the regulations imposed on them. And WHY NOT? They have the same constitutional rights and you and me.
Are transgenders just gay?
More to the point: are they just mentally ill?
I know a few people who are obsessed with their diet and enthralled with special foods and supplements, in the end I think they're just doing what hypochondriacs have always done, which is to obsess about what's going on with their bodies.
As Gramsci and other communists noted, class warfare was not working in the US so they promoted the idea of using race and gender wars as a way to vilify US culture and capitalism. Seems to be working and you do notice that none of this is taught in required courses at US universities.
Is that a misdirection?
No, it is a question, which you thus far have refused to answer.
Your position is that an anecdotal base of two, ...constitutes evidence
You are deliberately misrepresenting my comment, as you ignored my citing the The American College of Gastroenterology., which to the best of my knowledge does not deal anecdote.
But, don't forget: Opra thinks we all just 'have to die off before tHEY can have the country THEY want"!
The real culprit in this is the processed food industry and the fast food industry. Most of the stuff they sell would taste like absolute crap unless they pumped it full of sugar and salt and flavor additives to disguise the real taste. A lot of this stuff is terrible for you.
Especially the amount of sugar we eat, versus what was in a normal diet 50 years ago, is off the charts. Just look at all the obese people around you. People didn't look like that in the 1940s and 1950s.
On the other hand, however, we aren't all smoking cigarettes. That's a big plus in public health. We've replaced that addiction by all looking at smartphones 16 hours a day.
I like your pretend logical proscriptions and appeals to authority; the way you rule whatever you want into or out of pertinence or contention. By those rules you probably figure you'll corral a dissenter.
You're actually resorting to grasping at whatever you can find that builds a case for a special bias. That's been my point about press release and anecdote-as-science fallacies for years.
Now, if you want to throw the doors open to the world of objective scientific research then do so, because abusing green tea extracts isn't even remotely in the running.
Nice weak sauce wall of text there, Windy. Aside from proving the point I see you've somehow divined the mind of someone whose understanding is an order of magnitude beyond yours.
But there I've already descended to your level, haven't I? The problem with people like you isn't what you don't know. It's what you consciously refuse to know.
You're the only bulb actually dimmer than Windy, Anon. One wonders when so many inherent flaws in an argument eventually dawn on the clownshow presenting them...
No! It's what I consciously refuse to believe. What you advocate is pure anti-scientific quackery. I'm going to go have another cup of coffee (which may or may not cause cancer), with three heaping teaspoons of sugar (which may or may not cause diabetes) and a couple of glugs of half and half (which may or may not lead to heart disease) made with tap water (which may or may not contain lead).
Prove it! Give me your best case (not a litany of vague accusation, but rather a single best case) of big pharma doing their worst to intentionally harm us for profit. For extra credit prove that they lobbied government to knowingly allow them to intentionally harm us. This should be easy for a self proclaimed genius like yourself.
"The real culprit in this is the processed food industry and the fast food industry."
You hear these kinds of claims all the time. It is an attractive concept to believe that "natural" foods must be better than "processed" foods. And of course the implied or often blatant point is that these despicable "corporations" do this to us on purpose. God only knows that when General Mills formed their corporation that it was written into their bylaws to make and sell us toxic food, right? Somehow white flour has to be far worse than whole wheat flour and white rice is far worse than rice with the bran still on it, right? And it was all done to do us harm for some nefarious but yet undiscovered reason, right? NOT because the white flour is more palatable and actually preferred by the consumer. Not because a refined white flour can make more delicate and thus more tasty confections, right. NOOOOO! White flour was created to make us all sick and it is a vast conspiracy to kill Americans... Right?
What you advocate is pure anti-scientific quackery.
Now you're a liar, Windy, and you'll obviously be a liar every time you falsely divine my thought, motive, or intent and project it to serve your aim (which in this thread was to libel anyone not possessing your bizarre take on reality).
As a liar, you have no standing to opine on the subject. Funny, that takes us right back to my first reply too.
Shorter Anon: The world's biggest lobby probably spends a quarter billion a year for no reason.
With you thinking in these contradictions somehow the other guy must follow the fallacy and present a case refuting them. Next: You instinctively fist-pump that he failed to address your nonsense so win!
Anon, anybody sees you're a little out of your depth.
The one that always confuses me is "empty calories." I don't even know what that is. Some people seem to use it to mean calories that don't contribute any vitamins, or maybe fiber, but it's hard to say sometimes.
As far as I can tell, a calorie is a calorie. There does seem to be evidence that a high-animal-fat, high-protein, very-low-carb diet suits populations well, and that they immediately deterioriate in health when easy carbs are introduced into their cultures. That doesn't make the carb calories "empty," however.
SLAP! That was me hitting you across the face with my glove challenging you to a duel. You have impugned my honesty and my only recourse is a fight to the death. According to the rules you get to choose the weapons. We have all you can eat Prime rib dinners OR an entire bag of Halloween candy. We each eat as much as we can and the survivor is the winner. I want to warn you I have been training for this my entire life so if you choose to apologize you can avoid the gruesome fate that awaits you. Have your second contact my second.
Whoop, whoop! (I'm fist pumping as I type.)
Seriously you made the claim that big pharma is somehow behind keeping us from getting the "good stuff" that somehow some uneducated Amazon Forest witch doctor knew would cure everything. Give it your best shot! What is the worst thing that big pharma intentionally did to harm us???
Wrong on its face, clownshow. Go back and unjack your little strawman.
You're kinda indistinguishable from co-blowhard and troll Windtard, although his blatant falsehoods and strawmen are generally couched in some enormous wall of text involving some myopic, morally-binary ode to his imagined wisdom. It's probably the serial Oreo sugar highs, which surely all great writers of his considerable dotage resorted to to aid their focus and insight as they mightily added to mankind's knowledge. Windtard is the Oracle at Double-Stuf.
You can at least peck out the paragraph breaks, your finest talent among none, except that your haphazardly-ventured output is then simply rendered in more easily-forgotten shards of that consistent stupidity you're known for. Still, the public appreciates it.
Anyway, knock yourself out. Rage against your various sociopolitical hallucinations because that's always the way to get to the real substance of a thing.
And there it is; you got nothing. All you have is Shakespearian quality insults to throw at anyone who disagrees in a vain attempt to change the spotlight from your outrageous claims to your elegant but mostly indecipherable spew. If you had a legitimate example of the hated big pharma doing us harm you would have produced it. You got nothing.
Nothing? You just again exposed a risible lack of integrity, and you did it just as I predicted you would.
What you think you want - because you're so very badly thought - is a dozen paragraphs buying into your bias, fallacy, and contradiction - easily enough done in your idiotic formulation by substituting government for lobby, by the way, and apparently which you never considered - or you expect some gracious stranger to write another dozen paragraphs sucking up to that demand to blow it back in your lap fact by fact.
Because you're unable to, someone should do your work for you, the kernel of which is twelve simple words above. Which means you're so badly thought that you can't see either of these elementary points and truths so you heckle others for your obvious shortcomings. You've got a begged question going there the size of Montana, or whatever that thing is. I'll keep it simple.
What you miss - because you're so badly thought - is that reasonable people don't buy that. We don't correct the canyon-sized holes in inane bullshit - because others can be and are regularly so badly thought - and we don't care one iota if they go through life with those gaping flaws consistently announcing their presence. I'm perfectly happy to just let you stand there, like warm Jello, and that's why up until now you haven't been worth much of anybody's time.
You're so badly thought you could be the biggest waste of time in the place but from this vantage you make demands and heckle. Well, you just got five free paragraphs as well as the core of the refutation that somehow flew right past you how many times now?
Yeah! You got me. I wanted you to write a bunch of paragraphs. Yep! You're too smart for me...
