We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Imagine a new president whose first year saw: withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord; wiped out ISIS; reversed hundreds of Obama Administration regulatory overreaches; saw back-to-back quarters of 3 percent economic growth; a stock market gain of over 20 percent; illegal immigration plummeting by more than 50 percent; a sterling originalist appointed to the Supreme Court and a record number of similarly-minded judges to the lower appellate courts; and the most fundamental pro-growth tax reform in 30 years.
"Only in America are the poor fat and the prosperous fit..."
Same, same for Canada and - judging from my time living in the UK - an increasing characteristic of Europeans too.
From Class (1983), the late Paul Fussell's mordant little commentary on American society:
"A recent magazine ad for a diet book aimed at proles stigmatizes a number of erroneous assumptions about weight, proclaiming with some inelegance that 'They're All a Crock.' Among vulgar errors thus rejected is the proposition that 'All Social Classes Are Equally Overweight.' The ad explains:
Your weight is an advertisement of your social standing. A century ago, corpulence was a sign of success. Today it is the badge of the lower-middle class, where obesity is four times more prevalent than it is among the upper-middle and middle classes.
And not just four times more prevalent. Four times more visible, for flaunting obesity is a prole sign, as if the object were to offer maximum aesthetic offense to the higher classes and thus exact a form of revenge."
I was in Times Sq. back in the 70's. Remember vaguely, belting out a tune with some big guy with a red beard from Quebec. He bragged that he came all that way. I told him I was from Florida. He was impressed. temp was down into the low teens and the Irish bars all had the "stick in the door". Had a great time. Only need to do it once. Of course, back then there were no guys slinking around with ticking backpacks. Pray there aren't any this year
Where is the outrage? The evidence is overwhelming that under Obama the FBI, the DOJ, the IRS, the CIA and the NSA conspired against the Republicans and against Donald Trump. They broke many, many laws while doing it. And what do we have to show for these revelations? Nothing! No one has gone to trial, no one has gone to jail and based on what I see in the news and in congress no one will. So what is to stop the next far left commie president from doing what the last far left commie president did???
I love NYE. And New Years resolutions, too, even though Maggie's is against them.
But, never in a thousand years would I find Times Square a place where I wanted to be. It looks miserable. So crowded you can't even pull your pint out of your pocket and not enough room for a beer stand. I've always assumed that people peed where they were standing because it looks like once you have a spot where you can breath you don't move until the ball drops.
