We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

I work with Google, Amazon and Facebook pretty regularly.
In order of willingness to be open and somewhat square-dealing, my experience is:
Amazon (though very difficult to negotiate contracts with)
Google is, by far, the worst offender in terms of being bad for other businesses as well as consumers. That's not to say they don't have a great product or add value. But they are just pains in the ass to work with. They swing their weight around like nobody's business and don't care whether you benefit or not. They are convinced their size is what makes them 'right' and 'smarter' (I used to meet with one rep when Google was trying to break into the children's market and I kept trying to explain the legal and trade agreements which make doing business in that field so difficult. She kept saying "we're Google, we'll get around all that." They didn't)
Facebook is actually pretty fun to work with, and they are willing to TRY to work with most firms. They don't necessarily believe their size proves how right they are in what they do, but they do use their size as leverage, as anyone would. However, they fail to see how their model is actually undermining and destroying the businesses which feed their pages. In other words, without content, they are useless, and they are sucking the blood (ad revenue) away from every single publisher. If publishers throw up subscription walls, Facebook loses. If publishers lose too much ad revenue, and go out of business, Facebook loses. Facebook is trying now to work more closely with publishers. It's a weird dynamic, and I'm not entirely sure it's going to work for either side in an effective manner.
Amazon is more concerned with getting consumers what they want, which makes them easy to work with. Tough to negotiate with, for sure, but that's because they probably control and touch more data points on individuals than any company other than Google. But I'd say they have MORE data than Google, since they can link it all back to purchase behavior.
I don't consider any of them to be negative influences. People who think Standard Oil was "bad" fail to review history in an astute manner. By the time anti-trust kicked in with them, they'd already lost most of their share of major markets. They were already in decline. But Standard Oil DID consolidate markets, and bring something to widely available and affordable use, which would've been difficult to do if they hadn't been a very large 'robber baron'. And people also forget that Standard Oil helped break the backs of the railroads which had been dominating the economy, and also helped the rise of steel.
The FANGs (Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, Google) are going to be replaced someday. Remember when IBM was the Death Star? What about when Microsoft was? Oracle was for a brief moment, too. GE and GM were scary monsters, too.
Where are they all now?
Re: welfare state
I'm surprised that the author didn't mention that it is just a way of buying votes with other people's money while claiming to be virtuous.
"Chasing the Scream"
And "Almost everything we think we know about addiction is [still] wrong."
One can chase their tail for decades trying to find the cause but, there is only one cure. His name is Jesus and he is the Christ.
I'll just leave it at that without going on to testify. But on a side note I would say; look up the root and history of the word testify. Tell me that won't drive the SJW's bonkers.
There are a lot of SJWs who would like to remove my ability to testify in the way you mean it.
Keep the faith, brother.
Re: Pension bailouts
It used to be the Democrats would scream about underfunded pension plans. Now, they want to eliminate the problem by basically bailing out the pension funds. Of course the pensions for government employees are what they really want to bailout so legislators can continue to make outrageous promises backed up with our money.
Re: White nuclear families
The definition of racism changes daily but now it means it's always whites who are racist. Daniel's implication is that all whites are racist. That is itself is a racist position.
Addiction is probably too complex to have one simple definition. But most people are not addicted and most addicts seem to have (and had before their addiction) mental health issues. There seems to be a genetic component to addiction, there is certainly evidence of that with alcohol and only slightly less evidence with hard drugs. Some estimates are that 80% of property crimes are driven by the need for money to feed these addictions and a large percentage of violent crimes including murder are the result of addiction. Addiction is a huge problem without any good solutions.
That article was shared with me a few days ago with a circle of friends.
My only question is whether or not the black nuclear family supports black supremacy? If not, why?
It's an unsupportable claim she is making, she knows it, but by making it she makes herself relevant in some fashion. Most claims of racism (like the events at the NYU dorms last year, or the event at the Air Force Academy) are about getting attention when there is, relatively speaking, little racism taking place.
So something has to be created to create the outrage which is required.
Which leads to incidents like these.
There's enough REAL racism to focus on to keep the conversation going. But the knowledge that real racism is in decline and almost obliterated kills a money industry in the US. Who wants to keep talking about the very rare events of true racism when you can keep creating false racism to generate interest (and money)?
China is not an “enemy”. An enemy is someone who is only interested in you defeat and destruction. China is a rival. Both nations have strategic interests in common and strategic interests in conflict. Our economies are very intertwined. We compete against them for markets in developing countries. Like India, we have interests in common and in conflict. The key is avoiding the “enemy” issue and turning that rivalry into armed conflict. At the turn of the 19th century, England and Germany were on friendly terms. They let a rivalry degenerate into a naval arms race, moving England, who had been at war with France to centuries (although at this time, just strategic rivals) into an alliance with France. We have interests with China. ( defusing North Korea and Islamic terrorism). We want cheap goods, and so does China. We need both our economies to grow, although the economic back and forth is a source of friction. Calling a nation an “enemy” changes the mind-set and things can escalate in ways no one can predict. Neither side needs that.
To answer your first question, the expectation that Black people should live in a nuclear family group is a cis-white-heteronormative standard that is used to maintain the superiority of cis-white-hetero families and diminishes and otherizes the experiences of those who do not live under such structures.
That ought to be worth a couple credits at UNC.
I'd like to say that whites aren't keeping the black families down, but unfortunately there's LBJ's Great Society. Senator Daniel Moynihan said at the time that this would be bad for black families, and how right he was!
The uniparty would love to do the bailouts, they need votes very badly. Just say NO and vote accordingly.
In 1940 Japan wasn't an enemy either. China simply uses us that doesn't mean they "need" us. Their military and political goals lead to the eventual destruction of America. Within your lifetime they will attack us with their military might. They will continue to build their forces and their connections around the world until they feel they can beat us. Then they will pull the trigger. Don't underestimate them and don't believe anything they say.
China will be used to stop Korea, that has always been Trumps endgame. The tactic is to continue pressuring China imports with dumping penalties, bans, and any other method to disrupt Chinese access to the US market. In the end it will be cheaper for China to yank on NK's chain that to remain on the loosing end of their own trade. We import twice the goods from China as China imports from us. The US corporatists will not like the outcome as their Chinamart goods are no long allowed in this country. Their are a lot of others willing to fill the gap. Bannon is far more correct than wrong. War is the last leg of diplomacy.
UK health service...bet they aren't refusing service to HIV and STD carriers. Do they know what causes it...NOOOoooo. White Nuclear family, dangers of early daycare, Warren commiekids.....last gasp whine of the dysfunctional class leadership that demands a new world order to make things better.
On Millennials loving socialism: if you look closely, the survey doesn't really say that. They got tricky with wording the question, and the news sources that ran with it got trickier still. Graph Paper Diaries did the takedown. https://graphpaperdiaries.com/2017/11/08/millenials-and-communism/
My spouse has a "defined benefit" pension. Interestingly, last year we received a notification that a fair bit of said pension was not totally protected. May be a Canadian thing, but it seems there are two portions to the pension. We are hunkering down, just in case.
