We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Yesterday at our polling place (Maine) there was a young woman from the Maine People's Alliance collecting signatures to have a ballot initiative so that Mainers could vote in Universal Health Care and Universal In-Home Caregivers for the Elderly. I asked her how they were planning to fund it. She said, "people who make over $127,000 don't have to pay Social Security tax like the rest of us do, so we could simply make them pay the tax and that would cover it." I don't know if she was just confused, or if that's actually what she was told to say.
I am reminded of the story about some college students demonstrating for free room, board, tuition and a stipend. When asked how the college could afford this, the students said the college could get the money from the government. When asked where the government would get the money, the students said they could print it.
