We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Académie Française rejects push to make French language less masculine
Display comments as (Linear | Threaded)
What's most unprecedented about Trump is that despite running as a Republican he refuses to accept the DNC-MSM framing of his statements and policies as racist/sexist/homophobic (and any other -ist or -ic you can come up with) and doesn't apologize for them, unlike virtually every Republican President or candidate since Reagan.
"Académie Française rejects push to make French language less masculine"
Actually, that headline is somewhat misleading. The grammar of French won't permit the language to be less masculine (or more feminine, for that matter). You can't play those silly "gender" games in French as we do in English; the language just doesn't work that way. Nouns and pronouns can only be either masculine or feminine. There is absolutely no scope for any other arrangement.
This article is really about the only accommodation French grammar permits: "inclusive" language through the deliberate use of both masculine and feminine forms in those situations where there is a general reference to male and female persons.
Even if you did have your own "personalized" personal pronoun in French, it would still have to be either masculine or feminine.
Throwing rocks at the electrical workers:
A few years ago, the railroad was doing line upkeep. I went out and said Thank You. Thank you for making the investment to keep this line from dying.
Their answer was "Your the first person in all these miles to say that. Normally we just get yelled at."
(Maybe JJM can confirm:)
Didn't Canada have a contract for $385 million for some helicopters, the next gov't got pissy about it and spent $500 million to cancel the contract, thus yielding No helicopters, but spending the money?
And that's one of the things I've appreciated about him. Apparently it's supposed to be beneath the dignity of the office to actually defend yourself from all sorts of unsubstantiated insults.
"He's not letting us shame him! We must shame him MOAR until he shuts up!" - which lets us see just how crazy and stupid the shamers are.
I believe the contract was actually for around five billion. We were going to replace the Sea Kings on our RCN ships with the EH101. When Jean Chrétien took office as Prime Minister he cancelled the deal for a penalty of about half a billion.
As a result, we have had to muddle along with our tired Sea Kings (some of which have been in service since 1963) until the replacement, the CH-148 Cyclone - a version of the Sikorsky H-92 Superhawk - started to come into service.
"Angry Puerto Ricans Attack Whitefish Energy Workers"
They will have to be brought back into the first world by force. Government as charity at gunpoint. Now there's a business model.
RE: Mueller's "office"
The fact its referred to as an "office" tells me what I need to know. They intend to keep trawling as long as Trump is president. Something needs to be done about it, particularly if they refuse to investigate the money laundering associated with Fusion GPS and its collusion with Russian agents.
I'd suggest Trump repeatedly state that the illegal leaks from the investigation are out of control, and he's going to have to fire Mueller if it happens again.
How Churches Die:
It was a homosexual coup. The church leaders were aging and the would be coup leaders planned and executed a coup. I see a similarity between this and what Islam is doing in Europe today. The church was bullied into accepting the gay leaders out of fear of being labeled bigots. The church leaders and members simply were tricked and bullied into accepting this political takeover of their church. This is essentially what is happening in most of Europe. The EU demands that European members of the EU accept unlimited numbers of these so-called refugees and if they do not then they must be bigots. Islam is once again invading Europe but this time there will be no effort to repel the invaders.
Interesting too that in most of the EU I could be jailed for what I just said.
FREE SPEECH–WHERE ARE THE ADULTS IN THE ROOM?
Cowering under their desks
They're cowering, precisely because they are NOT adults, but rather a bunch of sissy, supplicating liberals who never grew out of their high school student council, glory days!
If only they could go back to deciding whether the soda machines in the lunch room sold Coke or Pepsi...!
Gutierrez has discovered the great white male math conspiracy. All of us white guys learn in the second semester of calculus that Newton actually invented the calculus to confuse and frustrate women and people of color. Gauss used to write in Latin just so women couldn't read his papers. Now we have been exposed. Math must be made simple, math for dummies.
2 + 2 = Whatever the hell we want it to be, so just check your white privilege.
I attribute this to him being an on-again off-again Democrat donor, living in the NYC media hothouse, and his view into the info-tainment complex via his association with The Apprentice. He's probably not really saying or doing anything that he didn't do in the past that was largely ignored by the media because he was at least on the fringe of being a 'good guy'. Unlike McCain, et al who just can't wait to get back into good graces with the FNM by bashing other Republicans, Trump or his advisers (most likely Bannon) actually figured this out.
Better he call for Sessions to appoint a special counsel to investigate the special counsel's office leaks
From the link: "Communism is, in reality, little more than a twist on ancient millenarian ideas so enduring that there must be something about them that does indeed appeal to human nature, or, at least aspects of it, whether spiritual, a simple craving for revenge or both. * And for intellectuals, it offers something with more tangible benefits, the chance to create a society where they will be the priesthood, where they will be in charge."
Not just communism, either, but all kinds of soft blue-state liberalism that depends heavily on income redistribution.
Electrical workers were heroes to nearly everyone here a couple of months ago, in the aftermath of Harvey's landfall. There was one little incident of a rude homeowner, which was almost instantly drowned out by a flood of appreciation. Many of us made the effort to wave at the workers every day and thank them personally whenever we could get close enough. The did an AMAZING job here getting power back to the entire county after two weeks. Nearly every power pole in the county is brand new. The nearest substation was scrap metal but has been replaced. Workers flooded in from all over the country. Our local government wasn't nuts enough to mistreat them.
I have to say, it's not like that in the Episcopal Diocese for the Western District of Texas. I wouldn't say that the politics are predominantly right-wing--they're rather mixed--but the liturgy and sermons are decidedly apolitical, no whiff of SJW preoccupations or any other fads. I like the Episcopal Church precisely because of its strong grounding in 2,000 years of history rather than whatever Hollywood and The New Yorker think is of paramount important this year.
Yeah, once he started running for President, it's remarkable how evil he became so quickly...
I remember listening to him about a year before he announced. He said he was tired of the gridlock, of the way things just didn't work in DC, of the corruption that nobody was willing to do anything about - and how he might have to try running for President in 2016 if it didn't change.
Everybody laughed - except him.
If nothing else, he's shown the country that we don't have to play by the rules imposed on us by the folks they give an advantage to. And that the chattering media doesn't have anywhere NEAR the power that we thought they did... or they believed they had.
pi is a really long number. we need a feminist version called ze that equals 3 (sorry for the tough math there with the word "equals").
That way, maff is easier, the calculation is close enough for government work, and doesn't offend anyone of sensitive persuasion who hates the fact that al-gebra is a white-privilege from moslem arabs.
He probably would but Sessions conveniently recused himself from the Russia stuff. The whole thing reeks pretty bad.
Um, your teaser pic is inaccurate.... a Vampiress with a cross?
Seems Bella Ligosi cowered in fear when a cross\crucifix was shown, and even the laughable Hammer pics had the same effects.
Did this age of Postmodernism even reach Vlad and his cohorts?
Actually, it was Lugosi and Hammer who got it wrong. In the legends, vampires are repelled by holy and consecrated items. The two sticks in a more-or-less crosswise fashion shouldn't work. Jewelry not blessed by a priest would be equally ineffective.
I am not a mathematician, only a lowly engineer, but I was taught that the foundations of modern mathematics were a synthesis of ideas from the Babylonian, Indus valley, and Ancient Greek civilizations, with important contributions from Egypt; China developed many of the same methods and principles largely independently (though it is difficult to determine which direction over the Himalayas some of the ideas traveled.
The very fact that each of these cultures both contributed and borrowed important parts of mathematical theory, like notation, measurement, ant proof, should indicate the cultural independence of the knowledge more than it diminishes the contribution of any one culture.
And yes, some Islamic scholars were responsible for retaining much of the Greek, Babylonian, and Egyptian knowledge through the European dark ages, but then it was other persons of Moslem and Arabic heritage that destroyed much of it as well. There's traffic on both sides of that street.
Huh! She had a cross? I looked at the picture for awhile and saw no cross. Didn't notice the vampire teeth either till you mentioned them. I did notice that red thingy that was in the way...
Your choice of female image---one of your daughters?-----says more about you and your wife than I care to know. So unnattractive and predatory. You seem like an old man anachromism, BD.
web, you are apparently new here. The picture is of bird dog in his halloween costume, in which he, or ze, identifies as a woman. He posts it every year. It is such an excellent and convincing costume that when he goes door-to-door trick or treating, his neighbors don't ever recognize him.
Your effort to shame our peerless leader for appropriating a non-yankee culture does not compute here.
Not to worry. There was a nice expunging Lectionary posted the day before and doubtless there'll be another this coming Sunday. Meanwhile, live large, friend, live large.
The thing about this is, it always seems like BD has got something to prove. Always wants to be a larger-than-life role model in many venues and it gets to laborious. Gratefully, there are several other contributors here who post and get outta the way. That's just my take but I wish him well nonetheless.
web, you don't have to read BD's blog. Your gratuitous complaint that BD is flawed, like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, is rude and unsupported.
BD is apparently male, so perhaps that is your basic complaint for personally attacking him and his wife? Rather than spend your valuable time here, you should take a feminist math course from the university of Illinois professor without a math degree who hates al-gebra, pi, and Pathegoras (another flawed male).
I like flawed males which was my original point. My opinion stands and this here blog guy is more than capable of taking up for himself. As for the algebra and math courses....I graduated in engineering and took many such courses and LOVED them all. Much more interesting and stimulating than huge, swollen, pulsating PMSing breasts that only 'real man' could fawn and salivate after.
Now there's a remark. You may want to look into moral consistency, using gratuitous ironically, invoking high character in a flawed argument, the definition of flawed, deploying the sexist! argument, ditto feminism as a, er, gratuitous charge, and oh never mind.
Just remember that living The Good Life is its own burden, Web. It's not an easy job but someone has to bear it witness.
And we lost a fair few chopper pilots, crew, and passengers when the Sea Kings started going down. But M Chretien is a Liberal (spelled by many as a Lieberal), and they were only servicemen, so no worries for him. For many of us, we still remember.
