We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Schlicter's Conservatism Is Not A Suicide Pact

Well, that is the problem with conservatism. Schlichter puts his finger right on it. We're shitty at coming up with The Next Great Big Idea. In fact, by definition - if you've read your Kirk, Nock, Oakeshott, Chambers, Southern Agrarians, Spinoza, Burke, or, heaven forefend, Buckley, that's sort of the point of conservatism. We are incredibly distrustful of The Next Great Big Idea, because Paris 1792, Germany 1848, Petrovgrad 1919, Buchenwald 1938, Beijing 1963, and the Berkeley faculty pretty much any time after 1965.
But Schlichter has a point. We should all get on board with Mr. Bigly and his great, great plans. Just great. The best plans ever. We should buy in, sell out, and march. Let's implement the plans.
What are his great, great plans, BTW? I've heard a lot of adjectives, not a lot of specifics. I'll be happy to get on board once I actually have a bus schedule or know that there is, in fact, a bus.
Sheriff Joe was the victim of lawfare. The left wing judge that ordered the sheriff to stop asking if illegals were illegals was coerced to do so by a left wing pressure group. This was a trap for the sheriff and when someone complained that a deputy asked about their immigration status, BINGO Arpaio was caught in the trap. The second part of the high tech lynching was to have him tried, convicted and sentenced by a left wing judge, who by the way had familial connections with a other lawyers working for amnesty. The judge refused to recuse himself, refused to give the sehriff a jury of his peers and simply went directly to the go to jail card for the sheriff. This was supposed to be a loud and clear message to all law enforcement that the judiciary was going to come and get them and the legislators would not interfere in the kangaroo'ing of the courts. The left is pissed that Trump trumped them. It won't last, the left owns the courts and the legislators, even when dominated by Republicans are weak and sniveling. The only solution to this is to impeach judges who commit lawfare and to elect bolder strong conservative legislators.
Sheriff Joe was the canary in the legal swamp and it is up to the voters to demand that the lawmakers drain the swamp.
The governor of Arizona should appoint Arpaio to Senator McCain's seat when Senator McCain has to step down. I think this juxtaposition would really please a lot of Arizona Republicans.
Schlicter is right.
Establishment conservatives lost every battle with the Left - for the last sixty years! Yet, they act with more sanctimony and moral preening than Obama.
Those pathetic losers lost! We're not listening to them anymore. They don't want to sell out? Sell out what? Losing their pathetic ass?
Win something. Then we'll talk. Until then, screw them and long live Sheriff Joe.
I see. So you really are standing around waiting. For what you can't decipher for yourself. And we wonder how "conservatism" lost a whole nation.
I have seen Jon Gabriel's comments before. Like a never Trumper he was/is a never Arpaio. If Sheriff Arpaio had saved someone's life by giving them mouth to mouth he would have claimed that Arpaio had halitosis.
One thing is undisputable: That the left/hispanic activists/La Raza went after Arpaio AND that the judge issued a court order that most honest lawyers agree was a trap and so poorly written that no police department could have avoided being trapped by it. This was no accident. The intent was that as soon as Arpaio's deputy's stopped a vehical with a hispanic that they would charge him with contempt regardless of if there had been racial profiling or not. The purpose was to both stop any attempt by law enforcement to enforce laws against hispanics AND to scare off all city, county and state law enforcement in the country from cooperating with federal law enforcement. There is a massive left wing cabal to encourage a massive invasion from Mexico, Central America and South America. 90% of the anti-Trump movement is associated with this left wing effort to engineer a invasion of America. All of the presidential candidates except Trump would have approved of laws giving amnesty and weakening borders to assist this invasion. The underlying intent is to destroy the middle class in America because they are the only barrier to full left wing Marxist/Democrat takeover. Proof of this middle class threat to a Marxist/Democrat takeover is in fact the election of Trump. Make no mistake Trump will fall and the invasion will continue until we are destroyed.
I hate to issue an Appeal to Experience - anecdata is never that helpful - but I've been involved in conservative public interest litigation and activist groups, and have served in government carrying out a conservative administration's agenda. Not exactly standing around. Tired of hearing the recent arrivals to the party explain that the rest of us have no plan and no accomplishments. More like, you can never get your way entirely, and can sometimes not get your way at all, in our system of government. It's set up to prevent any particular faction from getting their way more often than periodically. Not like the Constitution really matters any more...
It's easy to lob batteries at the players in the arena. How many of the guys chucking batteries into the arena have ever stood in it? I'll give Trump some credit, he's in the arena.
Fantastic. Now if "conservatives" could only do something about, in no particular order:
-Isolating a conservative philosophy and inscribing it everywhere. Can't be what you can't identify.
-Doing the same for collectivism and as the dysfunction it is, denying it every access. For good measure, analyze what undergirds the mental illness conservatives call progressivism and as such, deny it at every turn. Can't beat what you insist on normalizing.
-Understanding the difference between partisan codependence - see above - and maintenance. Classical liberalism is the original status quo. How'd it ever end up at less than 10%? 5%?
-Grasping just how our ostensible right probably did more to end conservatism than the left. Like history? Then use it. Start with Wilson. No, start with Lincoln.
-Itemizing all the ways this happened and all the specifics of that colossal capitulation. This is actually first on the list but given the conservative record, apparently has to be presented last, after all is lost and scales just now start to fall from eyes.
Conservatives aren't conservative. They're statist centralist/corporatist cultural nationalists who, nine out of ten times, can't even identify issues not fed them by the media.
Rather than waste my time fisking all that, here are some logical points.
You get nowhere strawmanning the issue. Arpaio is an jerk whose record is what his record is, even as Gabriel reported it and Arizonans know it to be. Conflating your personal best image of the guy with the broader issue of border security is dumb.
The border issue is so vastly more complex than your cranky little sermon that they exist on entirely different levels. I get that you are all exercised over all illegal immigration; the point is that Arpaio isn't border security isn't Trump isn't your stripe of conservatism isn't a nice tidy little couple of windy paragraphs.
Prop him up all you want. Smear everything together like it's one thing. It's just not going to be reasonable or factual.
You can build all the monuments to a cartoon of a guy you want but a history cannot be erased with generalizing justifications cherry-picked from the whole. Loud partisanship is as over-done and under-informed as it is short on relevance to whatever it is you're on about, presumably borders.
"Thanks" (/s) for showing everyone exactly the problem with "principled" Conservatives.
It's less so they "lost" every battle with the Left...
...I'd say they became collaborators with the Left,
and we Americans have "had it" with one Party rule.
Of course "GoneWithTheWind" has it right.
Factually and articulately explained to boot.
In contrast, YOU yammer on about "strawmen" and
follow up with only juvenile spitballs like
jerk, dumb, "so vastly more complex" (ha! you're clearly the EXPERT...bwahaha!),
cranky little sermon, windy paragraphs, etc......
Dear Lord, what a childish windbag of a post you provide!
Since you AND I have experience,
you clearly avoid the fact that it is the ESTABLISHMENT GOP
which has been the hindrance to President Trump's agenda,
much in the same manner as it was the ESTABLISHMENT GOP
which pulled out all the stops to prevent President Trump from becoming the GOP candidate.
As I wrote below, Americans have HAD IT with "one Party" rule in Washington, D.C...
...and cheap excuses and apologias like what you offer.
