We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
1Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous. Praise befits the upright. 2Praise the Lord with the lyre; make melody to him with the harp of ten strings. 3Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts. 4For the word of the Lord is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness. 5He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord. 6By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all their host by the breath of his mouth. 7He gathered the waters of the sea as in a bottle; he put the deeps in storehouses. 8Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. 9For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. 10The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples. 11The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations. 12Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage. 13The Lord looks down from heaven; he sees all humankind. 14From where he sits enthroned he watches all the inhabitants of the earth— 15he who fashions the hearts of them all, and observes all their deeds. 16A king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. 17The war horse is a vain hope for victory, and by its great might it cannot save. 18Truly the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, 19to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. 20Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and shield. 21Our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. 22Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.
The war horse may be a vain hope for victory, but did you see that thing on the idiot box about the Mughal Empire the either night? The elephants, and their chain mail and sheet armor. Thousands of units linked together, keeping whole villages at work for years for just one suit. The elephants' tusks were sawn off and swords fitted, and the animals trained to slash with them. They were also trained to rip men apart. So George Lukas didn't invent the gigantic mammoth fighting machine...Terrifying.
Plus, the technology (in the 15th century) of the composite bow--twice the damage to the hapless person it hit as a longbow. Go look it up.
When I read this Psalm, I imagine myself some infantryman or peasant facing one of the great armies in history, and don't know if I would be strong enough in faith to trust only in the Lord. Think I'd want a few elephants on my side as well. Either that, or am I to decide that Christians are supposed to be like Ewoks, cute, cuddly, fierce, but ultimately defeating overwhelming evil by lassoos, tricks, well-lobbed logs?
I guess my point is that it's easy for us to trust in the Lord when we have the best country, the best army, navy, air force, etc. in the world. Would we pray so fervently, or sleep so confidently in His grace if we did not live in His Own Country?
Dearly beloved in Christ,

Psalms 107:20 He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.
1 John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

Psalms 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
