We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
An ice age of course would be a disaster killing most human life. But even the cyclical cooling periods we can expect will be a disaster for human life of biblical proportions. These warming cycles are very comfortable and crops grow well and diseases aren't as big a problem. But a mini-ice age would probably kill 1/3 of the human race within 20 years or so. The bad news is one is coming, it could be next year, next decade or next century but the record on this is clear it will happen.
The News Junkie: Scientists say the ice is coming now: A GLOBAL cool down will “march in with vengeance” to usher in a 100-year mini-ice age
That view is rejected by the vast majority of scientists as the forcing due to greenhouse gases is much larger than the posited forcing from the claimed effect due to solar cycles.
As for Milankovitch cycles, no ice age was expected for several thousand years, but has been additionally delayed by anthropogenic greenhouse warming. See Ganopolski et al., Critical insolation–CO2 relation for diagnosing past and future glacial inception, Nature 2016.
One possible explanation for the way global temps have been moving is that all of the "Coming Ice Age!" alarmist stuff of the 1970's was CORRECT, and that all the greenhouse gases we've been putting into the atmosphere has slowed down the coming ice age. That would explain why it is that the planet "should" be so much warmer but it is not (25% of all greenhouse gases ever produced have been in the last 15 years, but temps have stayed more or less steady instead of going up).
Full confession: I hate the cold, and secretly love Global Warming.
Wouldn't it be way worse if we as a species had to deal with another ice age??
Not only do I remember those Global Cooling days well (and through sheer luck survived the Great Blizzard of '78 which confirmed the worst fears of the scientific community that we were all going to die of cold and snow), but I remember the solution that was being advocated in Time magazine. That was, create large amounts of charcoal which would then be ground to a fine dust and sprayed on new glaciated areas. That would supposedly trap sunlight heat and would work to melt the glaciers and reverse the ice age. In short, carbon heaven both in the air and on the ground.
Worldwide: Over 1,200 laws aim to change weather — need more to limit downpours, seas, storms http://joannenova.com.au/2017/05/worldwide-over-1200-laws-aim-to-change-weather-need-more-to-limit-downpours-seas-storms/
The progressives will just legislate the ice out of existence.
