We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Via Insty, "... many religious Christians of a traditionalist bent believed that liberals not only reduce their deeply held beliefs to bigotry, but want to run them out of their jobs, close down their stores and undermine their institutions."
With Obama in office all of the news was good… or at least spun to look as positive as possible. For the next four years at least you can expect to see headlines like the one linked above. Everything is terrible and there is nothing good upon the land as long as Trump is in charge.
The pipeline, standing rock and the demonstrators:
I don't understand why these 'demonstrators' can get away with breaking laws that would put you or me in jail. I do understand the difficulty in arresting every lawbreaker when there are hundreds of them but the revolving door of the justice system in these cases makes no sense. If I threatened anyone the way these protestors threaten law enforcement and civilian security I could go to jail. If I as an individual were threatened by someone I could get a restraining order which the common everyday enforcement of which would put the 'perp' in jail just for intentionally going to where I was at the time. Refusing to obey lawful orders of the police would get you elected anywhere in the country except it seems at this site.
The majority of the Indians at this reservation do not want anything to do with this demonstration and have expressed that very explicitly. To characterize this as if the 'Indians' objected to this pipeline is simply inaccurate. This is a handful of rabble rousers, professional hired demonstrators and foreign money and communist front organizations.
The pipeline company should be allowed to sue the individuals and organizations who are illegally preventing them from working. Those who are arrested should either remain in jail until this is settled or released knowing that if they go back to the scene of the crime that the penalties will be much more severe.
In reality, the birthplace of secession in America is not Fort Sumter, but Salem Massachusetts. In the late 18th and early 19th century, Federalists based in Massachusetts agitated for the New England states to leave the Union. It really got going when Jefferson and the Republicans swept the 1800 elections, giving his party control of the Congress and the Presidency. The Federalists thought it was the sign of the apocalypse and ratcheted up their efforts to secede, culminating in the Hartford Convention.
Another benefit is that it could encourage New England to break off and form a separate country too. At the minimum, the members of the Cult, who have moved to other places, like Virginia and North Carolina, may decide it is time to return home. Maybe New England does not secede, but perhaps it can go back to being a reservation for Progressive nutters that is granted a degree of autonomy. It would be a bit ironic if the end result was a demand from the Cult for a return of Federalism and state’s rights.
The feds recently shot down people in Oregon for doing less. But then again, they were white ranchers, not politically correct people of color, and the Obama administration has actively been trying to kill off ranching the past 8 years and is now doing it literally.
As part of the Central Park Flora project—a three-year endeavor to document the wild flora of Central Park—the team has discovered white ash (Fraxinus americana), European ash (Fraxinus excelsior), two varieties of green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica var. pennsylvanica and Fraxinus pennsylvanica var. subintegerrima) and now pumpkin ash growing wild in Central Park.
Wedged between a large rock outcrop and the Bridle Path, west of Winterdale Arch and east of Diana Ross Playground, the newly discovered pumpkin ashes are estimated to be 30 to 40 years old, based on their trunk size. Since its founding in 1980, the Central Park Conservancy has been restoring habitat and planting and encouraging the regeneration of native species. Weeding out invasive species like Japanese knotweed and Norway maple gives native species such as pumpkin ash the space and resources to flourish.
New England Secession. We here in New Hampshire would feel it was the final blow for us standing against the long dark night. Yes, MA imports have turned us a slightly bluish purple, and NY emigrants have ruined the once-great state of VT, but Yankees still live here.
Yet I get the point. The rest of the country would rejoice.
