We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
A new chapter needed in the War Against Boys? Ms. Hoff-Sommers was (and is) right.
Jimmy don\'t play that
The two groups that should guzzle all the protein they want: growing children, and pregnant and/or nursing mothers. The common thread is nourishing future generations. The more people blather about how low portein and complex carbs are best, the fatter kids get and (perhaps) the shorter they will end up. Plus, the difference in calories and protein required to sustain a 6'2", 250 pound muscular son and a 100 lb 5 foot daughter....boys need more protein because they are usually bigger. It all reminds me of the way boys are bullied to be more feminine and sedentary in early elementary school. Not that all girls are wusses, but that there is something wrong when we expect boys to behave the way most eager-to-please little girls do....
Sounds like a theory in search of affirmation. If all teenage boys became ill or died young or developed diseases than indeed we would have some evidence of what is claimed. But no! Instead we get ever increasing life expectancies and better health. I sometimes suspect that the problem is that many in the health field do not take statistics in college and have a misunderstanding of what statistical evidence proves or fails to prove. Therefore they see any anomaly as "proof" of something or other and coincidently as proof of whatever their biases happen to be.
I remember those days well Jim! We'd finish basketball/football/Track practice or game & repair to the local Deli. The owner knew us so well he'd have the quarts of milk lined up & ready to go.
Teenaged boys should be crammed with all the protein they can consume & worked as hard can be managed.
See, this meat = protein myth is typical for for the lifestyle-signalling, unthinking Epicurean rightists who've lost every political skirmish, battle, and war for the last 100 years to rally behind as their final defense against evil smelly hippies and Whole Foods. Be proud.
Did I already say that meat exclusively or better = protein is a myth?
