We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Kennedy and his crew were asleep on picket duty in the Slot the night his boat was cut in half. He should have faced a courts martial, and would have except for his last name.
Disproved Nobel Discoveries?. Don't get me started on the Peace Prize and and it's "very deserving" recipients.
Hmm. Popular topics are gun control and Middle East. Not the scholarly discourse of Constitutional law or geopolitics but emotion-driven declarations like "And I sez to him, I sez ..." or bumper sticker aphorisms like "America, love it or leave it".
I like the one: "Europe, uh? Which part, the part whose ass we saved or the part whose ass we kicked?"
The most important tasks of the aspiring blogger are:
(1) blog daily;
(2) link headlines;
(3) excrete outrage - vainly, and repetitiously;
(4) throw on some boobs (optional);
(5) use post titles that contain buzz words to attract strangers;
"I doubt the efficacy of teaching, though it's noble indeed to attempt it. Witness the enormous learning, wit, and insight of so many wonderful bloggers whose voices can now be heard.
Still, as entertaining as their efforts are, it seems to me that the effect of their work in defeating the liberal, grifter enemy is marginal."

Wait, is it a surprise that in the last 25 years there has been a concerted effort to make self-employment difficult? We had the small reprise in the tech bubble when, unexpectedly for the government, self-employment was possible without license or permit or premises and only a computer and self-acquired programming know-how. But they moved quickly to squash that and demand it be "by their leave".
“Socialism; a speech delivered in Faneuil hall, February 7th, 1903, by Frederic J. Stimson
First, what is the best the socialists, in their writings, can offer us? What do the most optimistic of them say? That our subsistence will be guaranteed, while we work; that some of us, the best of us, may earn a surplus above what is actually necessary for our subsistence; and that surplus, like a good child, we may "keep to spend." We may not use it to better our condition, we may not, if a fisherman, buy another boat with it, if a farmer, another field ; we may not invest it, or use it productively ; but we can spend it like the good child, on candy — on something we consume, or waste it, or throw it away.
Could not the African slave do as much? In fact, is not this whole position exactly that of the ... slave? He, too, was guaranteed his sustenance; he, too, was allowed to keep and spend the extra money he made by working overtime; but he was not allowed to better his condition, to engage in trade, to invest it, to change his lot in life. Precisely what makes a slave is that he is allowed no use of productive capital to make wealth on his own account. The only difference is that under socialism, I may not be compelled to labor (I don't even know as to that — socialists differ on the point), actually compelled, by the lash, or any other force than hunger. And the only other difference is that the ... slave was under the orders of one man, while the subject of socialism will be under the orders of a committee of ward heelers. You will say, the slave could not choose his master, but we shall elect the ward politician. So we do now. Will that help much? Suppose the man with a grievance didn't vote for him?
By 1950, economist Sumner H. Slichter defined it as government-guided enterprise, more apropos would be State-strangled enterprise.
It is all, intentional or not, due to the continuous efforts to limit those with the liberty to better themselves through investment in income-producing activities, i.e., capital.
Capitalism is a system in which the individual has the liberty or, is permitted, by the current entity that has monopoly on violence, to retain their personal earnings over that required for subsistence and use this “profit” to purchase additional productive capacity, such as training, machines, real estate, etc., i.e., capital, to better themselves vice spending it on non-productive consumption. Capital is nothing more than retained “old labor” that is put to use producing additional income.
The type of capitalism one has is determined by who is permitted to engage in investments to better themselves up to State capitalism, commonly known as total socialism. Crony capitalism is when friends of the office holder are given special leave to better themselves.
Old Joe wanted him to get the Medal of Honor, but he ended up with the Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal, basically what you give Sailor of the Month.
He'd done some good work earlier, including helping pull Marine paratroops off Choiseul Island, but he was no John Bulkeley.
The reason he was transferred out of his cushy Embassy Row assignment in DC to the Solomons (he did not volunteer) was that J Edgar Hoover found out he was letting a lot of classified info slide across a lot of pillows and Hoover told FDR if he (Roosevelt) didn't do something about it, Hoover would.
Back when the movie came out, a lot of guys who'd been in the Solomons at the time were saying anybody else would have been court martialed.
"Ben Carson disarms the lib ladies of The View"
I doubt it. They are now plotting ways to bring him down.
The View: But Hitler won the election! hahaha So that makes Hitlers actions OK???
In all fairness to Joe Biden, he exploited his son while he was alive, as well.
as a navy vet myself I f**** deeply resent this bullshit political hit piece on a decorated and wounded veteran, later murdered by his political enemies.
I'm disappointed that MF would link to this but not in the least surprised that it brought out the local asshats.
chas, you also need a friendly adversary to discourage group reacharounds, choir preaching and excessive backpatting.
As a Navy vet who served with honor but not necessarily enthusiasm of distinction while Kennedy was president, I am deeply offended that JFK was a naval officer since he was neither physically nor emotionally fit to serve and did so only for political reasons. Tragic as his death was, if one looks at his accomplishments he was a joke and a fraud.
Donny: I agree. Those bloggers are needy folks. They have to see their name up in lights and gather a following.
Then they can sit round and say the same thing to each other over pumpkin spice lattes. It's like talking to themselves.
Oh, and offer up pithy aphorisms, like "The single biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has taken place." George Bernard Shaw
"But, you and I, we've been through that and this is not our fate;
Let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late."
sir, that is polished writing. here's an easier on the eyes version of In the summertime
Joe didn't do anything for Jack that he didn't do for Teddy later.
As for the whole family being sleazy, I would say that belongs to the men, the women they married seemed like decent people - for example Jackie O who did a good job raising her kids after Jack's assassination by keeping them away from the rest of the family.
The Syrian "refugees" will be allowed to settle in the U.S. and most likely live down the street from you. It will cost between $5000 and $10,000 a month to support them and that support could continue for as long as they live. If they commit a crime, murder, rape, the MSM will cover up any connection to their political or ethnic background and they will be referred to a "a resident of ___ (fill in the blank with your own small town). Illegal aliens kill about 3000 a year in the U.S. Most aren't murders many are simply drunk driving or stupidity but the dead person is still dead and wouldn't be if we enforced our immigration laws. So if you want more turmoil and deaths bring in the "refugees".
Holy Bear $h!t, Donald! You really are as dumb as a box of rocks.....and a left wing apologist too boot. The Kennedy klan are a bunch of criminals. They are basically a political wing of the Mafia family. JFK was no hero - he was a coward who would have been court martialed if not for his daddy's money and political connections.
You probably think Kerry was a war hero, too.
"The Kennedy klan are a bunch of criminals. They are basically a political wing of the Mafia family."
it all started with Papa Joe Kennedy back during prohibition.
He was the inaugural Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and later directed the Maritime Commission.
Kennedy served as the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1938 until late 1940, including the early part of World War II.
Rumors of insider trading, stock manipulation, bootlegging, association with Organized Crime, specifically Momo Giancana and the Chicago mob; involvement in Cuba with Batista.
Alas, the sins of the father are visited on the sons. Conspiracy enthusiasts reject Oswald as the lone gunman. Consensus is that JFK reneged on some agreements with the mob. Consensus is that the Chicago mob whacked JFK and took out Ruby to boot. Too many loose ends.
Bobby got whacked for similar reasons.
No mention of JFK's war record. Kerry, on the other hand has been called out as a liar and a phony. Too many guys served with him and the incident is relatively recent.
Looking at the last few Secretaries of State one might get the impression that the position is the kiss of death.
Being a Secretary of State is like being a Saskatchewan pig farmer — there's only so low that some folks will go.
mike .... mom's calling you home, time for your nap.
while I normally give slack to anyone who names himself after a Dave Brubeck album, your track record in documenting claims is kinda spotty at best.
so, source for your claim that refugees will get $120,000/year/life?
GWTW: I have a hard enough time composing posts that don't leave my ass hanging out; now I'll show you the homework you shoulda done before stepping out on the ice:
each refugee costs the Jordanian government 2,500 dinars ($3,750) to host per year. http://carnegieendowment.org/sada/?fa=53049
Irish Junior Minister for Finance Simon Harris estimated the that the cost for Ireland would be in the tens of millions.
"The cost to Ireland - and I don't like talking to this in terms of costs because we are talking about people's lives - of accommodating 4,000 refugees is in or around 48 million (euros) ($54 million)," said Harris. http://www.businessinsider.com/afp-eu-to-weigh-economic-costs-of-refugee-crisis-2015-9
In 2013, Germany spent around 1.5 billion euros ($1.67 billion) on allowances for asylum seekers, or about 12,500 euros per refugee per year, according to official statistics. If per capita costs stay the same, Berlin might find itself spending as much as 10 billion euros in 2015 to feed, house and teach German to the new arrivals. http://www.dw.com/en/what-helping-refugees-costs-germany/a-18693996
I'll leave the math up to the owls; I stayed home the day they taught math at my humble school.
Notice the cost in Jordan? We should leave the refugees there. All that money in our own country is better spent feeding and clothing our poor. Oh, and feeding your dog so he won't eat your homework.
Er, Donny, maybe he adopted that moniker from Margaret Mitchell's novel. Something about slaves and don't give a damn, shrug.
Actually I identified with the line in the film when Vivian Leigh asked Clark Gable what happened to the beautiful homes and plantations, the food, the bounty, the money. She was confused and sad and could not understand how everything could possible disappear almost overnight. Clark Gable's response was that it was gone! All gone, gone with the wind.
History is replete with this phenomenon and I have no doubt it will eventually happen to our country as well. What we need to do is keep a strong defense, elect intelligent capable leaders, avoid complacency, and beware of the enemy within. Perhaps Like all great nations ours must fall too but that does not mean we should accelerate the process because of greed or ignorance.
Typically when someone asks for a "source" or proof what they really mean is give me something more that I can refute in an attempt to avoid actually addressing your argument. My feeling is if you truly wanted to know what it costs for each refugee or each refugee family that you would research it instead of asking me to. The data is quite intentionally obscure and confusing. The federal government has 2400 "welfare" programs spread over 5 cabinet level departments and within those departments 2400 different welfare programs are administered by 100's of thousands of workers. Rarely are the costs of these workers ever tallied up in the overall cost of the programs.
Each and every refugee and each of their extended family members is eligible for many of these 2400 welfare programs and there is no or little accountability of who gets what. In addition there are a half dozen or more (again this info is intentionally obscured) quasi-governmental organizations created to manage refugee resettlement (read sign up for benefits) and to "mother" the refugees for decades and often for life. Each of these organization receives BILLIONS every year from the government to care for the refugees cradle to grave and that money too is not counted in the costs of refugees.
The refugees drive nice cars, live in very nice housing, eat quite well and manage to take trips/vacations back to their home country a few times a year and yet they typically do not work. And why should they work when they typically receive $5000 a month in direct assistance from the government and another $5000 a month in indirect assistance. Their medical needs are paid for 100% by the government, their "special" needs are paid for 100% by the government and everything they get, own or need is provided by the government. The "refugees" send billions back to their home country and are able to do this because of the large cash benefits paid for by American taxpayers. This program is rife with fraud, waste and abuse. Ask yourself why there is no accounting for the costs? Why the costs are understated when there is any public discussion of the issue? Why the entire refuge resettlement program is shrouded in mystery? Why are request of FOIA request ignored/stonewalled? Why citizens cannot even know where refugees are or will be resettled?
None of this is in doubt. The only unknowns are how many refugees and how much does it cost. These two pieces of information should be readily available but for some reason they are treated like a state secret.
refugee admissions explained here by these State Department papers:
refugree admissions! explained! by the State Department!
I have nothing but the greatest admiration for antebellum culture. honestly, I swear this is true.
so, again, source for the $120k yearly for life claim?
I'm calling you out on your specific bullshit claim that the government hands over $120,000 plus benefits each year for each refugee for life.
either you have a source or you made it up.
which is it?
the refugee program details are "hidden" on the state department's website, linked above. and no, I didn't hack into hillary's scooby server or hire tom cruise to break into a secret government lair. I used the google spy network.
the line you remember isn't in the book, its not spoken in the movie. its from a title card:
There was a land of cavaliers and cotton fields called the old south. Here in this pretty world gallantry took its last bow. Here was the last ever to be seen of knights and their ladies fair. Of master and of slave. Look for it only in books, for it is no more than a dream remembered. A civilization gone with the wind.
from the novel, SOH wonders if Tara is still standing or if it is "gone with the wind which had swept through Georgia."
I never read the book but have seen the movie three times. That line was absolutely spoken in the movie.
You can call me out or safe I really don't care. If you don't do the research yourself you probably wouldn't believe it anyway. I guess you think all these refugees come here with a trust fund. Your links offered nothing in terms of costs and useful information.
Speaking of Communists and conspiracies, I offer this:
In the early part of the Cold War the spread of communism was a major concern in this country, and it was in regards to that threat that Hoover’s comments are attributed.
“The individual is handicapped by coming face-to-face with a conspiracy so monstrous he cannot believe it exists. The American mind simply has not come to a realization of the evil which has been introduced into our midst. It rejects even the assumption that human creatures could espouse a philosophy which must ultimately destroy all that is good and decent." - J. Edgar Hoover, The Elks Magazine (August 1956)
That may be true, but I often find myself asking, is it possible that Hoover may have been thinking about something else, something more ominous and diabolical? Is it possible that he may also have been concerned about the plans to do away with our nation’s sovereignty while creating a New World Order?
What better way to do that than from within? Not all the refugees are simple farm folk ready to assimilate the American Way. There is a high percentage of healthy young single men coming across the borders.
Think: Trojan Horse(s)
Sleeper cells in place and up and running, ISIS version of an underground railway.
Our infrastructure vulnerable. http://www.jimstonefreelance.com/grid.html
And we feel guilty somehow and pay tons of money to these people without any vetting? Yikes.
you can find the shooting script online. run a word search, its not there. I haven't seen it in years, maybe the title card is read and your remember hearing it.
chas -- and I say this as your oldest friend -- you've been reading too many kornspiracy websites.
Nope! Absolutely saw it in the movie and heard Clark Gable speak it.
