We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
“The Wall Street Journal is read by the people who run the country. The Washington Post is read by people who think they run the country. The New York Times is read by people who think they should run the country. USA Today is read by people who think they ought to run the country but don’t really understand the New York Times. They do, however, like their statistics shown in pie-chart format. . . . The Boston Globe is read by people whose parents used to run the country, and they did a far superior job of it, thank you very much . . .
Re: Congress doing nothing cartoon-I always chuckle when I hear some say, with some level of indignation, "This is a do nothing congress". As far as I am concerned, that's the only time they do no damage.
Re: Rising seas-There is a basic tenant, rule, law, axiom, saying, (fill in your own word) regarding water. "It seeks its own level". For water to rise in one area and not another area seems a bit preposterous to me. The corrections are not immediate but level they must. For those who doubt this basic rule, buy a clear tube (bout 10' will do), fill it with water, leave space at the end of both sides of the hose for water to move up and down, tap out any air bubbles in the line, hold both hoses up to a wall at eye level for convenience, let water settle. Move one hose up or down and inch and watch the water level. In my mind, as small as it may be, the only conclusion at this time is the sand is sinking, shifting, moving, relocating, implementing urban renewal, (fill in your own word here). Maybe there is a bunch of people with shovels moving the sand.
The new labeling standard that costs food producers billions is of no value to consumers but merely a Trojan Horse for the food nanny's. It is a foot in the door to controlling what American's can eat. The media is full of misleading information about food and it's effect on health and this will only get worse as government gets into the arena. Frankly I preferred the "honest" fraud that is supplement industry lying for profit to the dishonest fraud that is the government lying for power and control. At least with the supplement industry and it's handmaiden the health/diet book industry they only harmed the foolish and science challenged and of course their wild claims were always good for a laugh. But the government intends to control what you eat and what you can buy at the store and they intend to do it claiming they are trying to make us all healthier. This is an insidious attack on our freedom.
I..........: There is a basic tenant, rule, law, axiom, saying, (fill in your own word) regarding water. "It seeks its own level".
There are two basic mechanisms of actual sea level rise. One is for land ice to melt, increasing the total amount of water in the oceans. The other is for the water to warm, which increases its volume.

Don't elevate your blood pressure by reading that crap, dc. I won't even give sites like Salon a click anymore. I'll let guys like Bird Dog, Gerard Van der Leun, Glenn Reynolds, or John Hinderaker do the suffering for me... ;-)
Is the increase in either case a real measurable distance or is so minute as be essentially meaningless?
And, for every degree in water is increased in temp, how much more space would it take up? (Using a cubic ???? as a point of reference).
Or the land could fall in relation to the water. Many of the tide gauges are at large port cities and their height in some cases is lower because of the weight of structures and withdrawal of ground water. See here: http://www.john-daly.com/ges/msl-rept.htm
For example, Adelaide in South Australia is showing a strong sea level `rise' which is not evident at nearby smaller ports (Port Pirie, Port Lincoln, Victor Harbour). The Adelaide anomaly has since been found to be caused by long-term withdrawal of groundwater since European settlement, giving rise to local urban subsidence . Another bad case of subsidence exists in Bangkok, where the sea has risen by a meter in the last 30 years. The sea has not really risen, the land is merely sinking .
