We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Death Threats Aimed at Boy, 11, Who Bagged Rare Albino Deer
You know why albino deer are rare? Because it's a mutation. A negative mutation as it does not benefit the animal's survival. It's humans that are stupid and want to provide lifelong protection for substandard animals (ie. white tigers). Animals that would go extinct in the blink of an eye, because a mutation increases their chances of not surviving. "But they are pretty!". Do-gooders like to pat themselves on the back when they help animals that are not meant to survive - weakening the gene pool. Good going guys. At least you have your self esteem.
As for the death threats: This is standard practice now among our tyranny- of -the -minority culture. 11 year olds are not exempt. He killed Bambi.
RE: The US Army Operating Concept
The Army fights very well I think. They fight large wars. So does the Navy. However, the Marines fight small wars - they even have a manual titled "Small Wars Manual". The entire WWII fighting that the Marines did was a series of island hopping or "small wars". They also have a manual called "Warfighting", which is their manual on strategy. One of the things it says is: "Never tell your enemy what you are going to do nor what you are not going to do". I understand why President Obama doesn't know this but his advisers should. Are they adverse to telling him or does he ignore them?
With a title like "Can't Afford a House? Don't Buy One", one has to wonder who intelligent enough to read something from Bloomberg's financial news would also be stupid enough to think that it is a good idea to buy a huge illiquid property that you can't afford on large leverage? Thankfully, the article tells us - The Center for American Progress! Lefties normally propose ideas that have failed over and over - usually somewhere else to somebody else - but this one failed spectacularly just a few years ago right here and they want to try it again! Only a Lefty has such faith in himself and his ideas to believe them more reliable than recent reality!
"One of the serious problems in planning the fight against American doctrine, is that the Americans do not read their manuals, nor do they feel any obligation to follow their doctrine..."
- From a Soviet Junior Lt's Notebook
Absolutely true and it applies double to the Marine Corps. You think we are going to follow an instruction manual written by an egghead in Quantico? Read all manuals on our equipment and never one on strategy. I have sat in Regimental strategy sessions in a war zone and never saw a manual present.
Football Coach Fired Because Eating Watermelon Is Racist - Parents from other schools felt smashing a watermelon and eating it after games was inappropriate.
From a link in the comments: Football coach reinstated after controversial 'watermelon ritual'. This episode of political correctness didn't occur in Massachusetts or California, but in the birthplace of the Confederacy- Charleston, South Carolina. The fired-and-then-reinstated football coach coached at Charleston County's Academic Magnet High School, a school which at its website bills itself as "Seriously Smart." From the Wiki for Academic Magnet High School :
Compared to an average South Carolina high school, there is a higher Asian-American population, and a lower African-American population at Academic Magnet.
Which, sadly or not, is no surprise.
Not surprisingly, given its magnet status, this is a high achieving school.
In the May 19, 2008 Newsweek cover story, Academic Magnet High School was ranked 7th among national public high schools based on an index consisting of the quotient of AP exams taken by all students and the quantity and quality of graduating seniors. Most recently, it was recognized by U.S. News & World Report as the 10th best high school in the nation
While it is a school with a high level of academic achievement, it has recently done well in sports.
To date, the school has won 12 state championships, each of which was won in the past four years, including five championships in the 2013-2014 school year alone. The football team achieved its first ever winning record (6-5) in the 2012 season.
Denouncing the coach for the watermelon smashing would appear to me to be jealousy at a "smart" school beating a regular and not so smart school. [In TX, it is not uncommon that affluent suburban high schools beat urban minority schools in football.]
Regarding hurling charges of racism at South Carolina and at Charleston- which was the birthplace of the Confederacy-recent election history should be taken into account. South Carolina's governor is the daughter of immigrants from India. When Senator Tim Scott ran in the 2010 Republican Primary for the SC-1 seat, which includes most of Charleston County, he beat Strom [yes, THAT Strom] Thurmond's son with a resounding 60+% of the vote. When a Black beats Strom's son, you know things have changed.
While things have changed, there is resentment of the mostly white magnet school, so you know not everything has changed. Which is also the case in TX.
I know of a magnet school in TX which is located in the same building as a regular mostly minority high school. The regular students resent the magnet school- but have no desire to subject themselves to the workload of the magnet students.
The magnet school decided to try to reduce this resentment by having "bridge" classes for the regular students. I once substituted in such a "bridge" class, and had something thrown at me while I was writing on the chalkboard. Which, according to the teacher I substituted for, was an indication of the success of the "bridge" classes. I had a pretty good suspicion of who had thrown at me: a WHITE guy who was also on the baseball team. My suspicions were implicitly confirmed the following week when I greeted him in the hall. He turned his face away and didn't reply.
